Mt 21, 33-43. 45-46

GospelMT 21:33-43, 45-46
Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
“Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it,
dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.
Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.
When vintage time drew near,
he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.
But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat,
another they killed, and a third they stoned.
Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones,
but they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent his son to them,
thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another,
‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?”
They answered him,
"He will put those wretched men to a wretched death
and lease his vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the produce at the proper times.”
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures:

The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes?
has become the cornerstone;

Therefore, I say to you,
the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you
and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables,
they knew that he was speaking about them.
And although they were attempting to arrest him,
they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.
the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you

Meditacion:
Amen

What can this parable of the vineyard tell us today? This harsh parable was born as an expression of the enormous conflict that Jesus had reached with the leaders of his people. It is as if Jesus saw his death near, towards which the violence that seized the hearts of the leaders of his people led him. Jesus' offer of a fraternal, solidary, egalitarian society clashed with the interests of the system.
What happened? Israel's leaders have not cultivated the vineyard, preparing it for the Messiah. They have appropriated the people and decide the death of Jesus because it takes away control over simple people. The heir is killed outside the vineyard, like Jesus on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
If you pay attention, this continues to happen, society becomes more secular and leaves God aside for its new concern, technology, which apparently solves all problems. But even with all the "problems solved" man still needs God.
This parable is of great importance in the whole of the gospel. Matthew stressed that at first the good news is directed only to Israel, to communicate that the time has come to announce salvation to all nations. But as the people of the Promise rejects that invitation, Jesus will gather around the twelve Apostles a new Israel that will bear better fruit and announce salvation to all peoples.
Up to here we might think that it is a situation that is beyond us, that the parable is to judge that ancient time and its religious leaders.
Today, too, the temptation to exclusivism may be lurking: the vineyard is mine.
The story of José betrayed and sold by his brothers makes us open our eyes to our reflection: What does the word fraternity mean to us? What openness do we have towards people of different cultures? Do we also think that the immigrants who come to our country seize what we need to live?
Friends, we seek together the will of God. Through the Word Jesus illuminates our minds and fills our hearts with his Spirit so that we are able to collaborate in the construction of a different society that prepares the arrival of his Kingdom.
"Eternal Father, we ask you to protect the pastors of your Church from the difficulties and temptations in the priestly ministry." Amen
