Jn 1, 1-18

En el principio ya existía aquel que es la Palabra,
y aquel que es la Palabra estaba con Dios y era Dios.
Ya en el principio él estaba con Dios.
Todas las cosas vinieron a la existencia por él
y sin él nada empezó de cuanto existe.
Él era la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres.
La luz brilla en las tinieblas
y las tinieblas no la recibieron.

Hubo un hombre enviado por Dios, que se llamaba Juan.
Éste vino como testigo, para dar testimonio de la luz,
para que todos creyeran por medio de él.
Él no era la luz, sino testigo de la luz.

Aquel que es la Palabra era la luz verdadera,
que ilumina a todo hombre que viene a este mundo.
En el mundo estaba;
el mundo había sido hecho por él
y, sin embargo, el mundo no lo conoció.

Vino a los suyos y los suyos no lo recibieron;
pero a todos los que lo recibieron
les concedió poder llegar a ser hijos de Dios,
a los que creen en su nombre,
los cuales no nacieron de la sangre,
ni del deseo de la carne, ni por voluntad del hombre,
sino que nacieron de Dios.

Y aquel que es la Palabra se hizo hombre
y habitó entre nosotros.
Hemos visto su gloria,
gloria que le corresponde como a Unigénito del Padre,
lleno de gracia y de verdad.

Juan el Bautista dio testimonio de él, clamando:
“A éste me refería cuando dije:
‘El que viene después de mí, tiene precedencia sobre mí,
porque ya existía antes que yo’ ”.

De su plenitud hemos recibido todos gracia sobre gracia.
Porque la ley fue dada por medio de Moisés,
mientras que la gracia y la verdad vinieron por Jesucristo.
A Dios nadie lo ha visto jamás.
El Hijo unigénito, que está en el seno del Padre,
es quien lo ha revelado.

JN 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. 
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.

A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light, 
so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God, 
to those who believe in his name, 
who were born not by natural generation 
nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision 
but of God.

And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son,
full of grace and truth.

John testified to him and cried out, saying, 
“This was he of whom I said, 
‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me 
because he existed before me.’”
From his fullness we have all received,
grace in place of grace,
because while the law was given through Moses, 
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God.
The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, 
has revealed him.

Meditacion:

¡Feliz víspera de Año Nuevo! ¿Recibir un nuevo año resulta inquietante? Sin duda, el 2020 fue un año difícil. Enfrentamos una pandemia a nivel mundial, disturbios raciales, inestabilidad económica y un sinnúmero de altibajos personales. Posiblemente viste tu porción de incertidumbre e inseguridad. ¿Qué puedes hacer? Toma nota del Evangelio de hoy e intenta volver al principio (Juan 1, 1-18).

Cuando tus circunstancias parecen difíciles, vuelve al principio de este Evangelio que puede darte algo de perspectiva. Puede convencerte de que la intención de Dios no ha cambiado, tú sigues siendo su hijo amado y él sigue teniendo buenos planes para ti. Reorientarte a ti mismo de esta forma puede ayudarte a drenar la ansiedad y el temor y darte una sensación de esperanza y de propósito.

Así que vayamos al principio abriéndonos camino en medio de los primeros versículos del Evangelio de hoy:

“En el principio ya existía aquel que es la Palabra… y era Dios (1, 1). Jesús es Dios. Antes de que nada existiera, él existía en perfecta armonía con la Trinidad, y todavía existe hoy en día. Es más, él te creó para la eternidad y te llama a tener tu parte en ella.

“Todas las cosas vinieron a la existencia por él… Él era la vida (1, 3-4). Dios hizo todas las cosas intencionalmente, nada es un error. Todo sirve a su deseo de compartir su vida y amor con su creación. Tú le perteneces y él está dirigiendo todo hacia la meta de concederte su amor.

“La vida era la luz de los hombres… y las tinieblas no la recibieron (1, 4-5). El hecho de que Dios comparte su vida con nosotros es como una luz en la oscuridad de nuestro mundo que puede guiarnos y ayudarnos a ver las cosas como él las ve y su luz no puede extinguirse. A pesar de lo que estés viviendo, busca la luz de Dios para disipar cualquier tiniebla en tu corazón.

Hoy es el momento de terminar el año, sí, pero también de recomenzar. Así que al acercarte al final del 2020 y anticipar el inicio del 2021, dedica un tiempo para mirar de vuelta al principio. Permite que eso te sirva como un ancla al final de un año agitado, permite que Jesús te llene de esperanza por las cosas nuevas que están por comenzar.

“Señor, ¡te entrego mi futuro!”

Happy new year eve! Is receiving a new year unsettling? Without a doubt, 2020 was a difficult year. We face a global pandemic, race unrest, economic instability and countless personal ups and downs. Possibly you saw your share of uncertainty and insecurity. What can you do? Take note of today's Gospel and try to go back to the beginning (John 1, 1-18).

When your circumstances seem difficult, go back to the beginning of this Gospel which can give you some perspective. It can convince you that God's intention has not changed, you are still his son, his beloved, and he continues to have good plans for you. Reorienting yourself in this way can help drain anxiety and fear and give you a sense of hope and purpose.

So let's get back to the beginning by making our way through the opening verses of today's Gospel:

“In the beginning there was already the one who is the Word… and he was God (1, 1). Jesus is God. Before anything existed, he existed in perfect harmony with the Trinity, and he still exists today. What's more, he created you for eternity and calls you to have your part in it.

“All things came into being through him… He was life (1, 3-4). God made all things intentionally, nothing is wrong. It all serves his desire to share his life and love with his creation. You belong to him and he is directing everything toward the goal of granting you his love.

“Life was the light of men… and darkness did not receive it (1, 4-5). The fact that God shares his life with us is like a light in the darkness of our world that can guide us and help us see things as he sees them and his light cannot be extinguished. Regardless of what you are experiencing, seek God's light to dispel any darkness in your heart.

Today is the time to end the year, yes, but also to start over. So as you approach the end of 2020 and anticipate the start of 2021, take some time to look back at the beginning. Let that serve as an anchor at the end of a hectic year, let Jesus fill you with hope for the new things that are about to begin.

Lc 2, 36-40

En aquel tiempo, había una profetisa, Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser. Era una mujer muy anciana. De joven, había vivido siete años casada y tenía ya ochenta y cuatro años de edad. No se apartaba del templo ni de día ni de noche, sirviendo a Dios con ayunos y oraciones. (Cuando José y María entraban en el templo para la presentación del niño,) se acercó Ana, dando gracias a Dios y hablando del niño a todos los que aguardaban la liberación de Israel.

Una vez que José y María cumplieron todo lo que prescribía la ley del Señor, se volvieron a Galilea, a su ciudad de Nazaret. El niño iba creciendo y fortaleciéndose, se llenaba de sabiduría y la gracia de Dios estaba con él.

LK 2:36-40

There was a prophetess, Anna,
the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. 
She was advanced in years,
having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,
and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. 
She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. 
And coming forward at that very time,
she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child
to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
of the law of the Lord,
they returned to Galilee,
to their own town of Nazareth. 
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him.

Meditacion:

¿Alguna vez has contemplado el crecimiento de una planta? En algún video se muestra ese crecimiento condensado en unos minutos, mediante la toma de imágenes a lo largo de varias semanas, meses y años… Lo que comienza siendo una semilla, casi imperceptible, termina siendo una planta, un árbol, que muchas veces regala su fruto… para dar vida a otros seres vivientes. Nos gusta comer el fruto, aunque a veces olvidamos que para llegar a ello hace falta plantar, regar, cuidar, esperar… La naturaleza tiene sus tiempos y sus ritmos. Y cuando pretendemos otra cosa estamos violentando la realidad.

También esto lo vivió Jesús. Su crecimiento fue progresivo. Quien le viera de un día para otro, no percibiría apenas ningún cambio externo. También fue recién nacido, tuvo cinco años, cumplió los doce, llegó a los dieciocho, a los veinticinco, a los treinta… En la esperanza de vida de aquella época, podemos decir que, aunque su vida fue interrumpida violentamente, Jesús pasó por todas las edades del ser humano: niñez, juventud y madurez. Y en ese crecimiento supo de la importancia del día a día, de cada palabra y cada gesto, de la perspectiva que dan los años… Y experimentó que el Padre estaba a su lado, en todo momento y circunstancia. “El niño iba creciendo y robusteciéndose, y se llenaba de sabiduría; y la gracia de Dios lo acompañaba”.

Así es nuestra vida. A veces quisiéramos crecer más rápido. A veces quisiéramos disfrutar de los frutos… sin haberlos plantado… o cuidado… o sin esperar a que estén en su sazón. Y la experiencia enseña que no es bueno saltarse etapas, sino que conviene saber esperar, en actitud de acogida y responsabilidad.

El Dios de la Vida, que conoce por experiencia lo que es el ritmo de las cosas desde su encarnación en la persona de Jesús, acompaña ese crecimiento, alentándolo desde dentro… en la espera de que cada cual dé los frutos esperados, para la vida del mundo. ¿En qué momento de tu vida te encuentras hoy?

Have you ever contemplated the growth of a plant? Some video shows this condensed growth in a few minutes, by taking images over several weeks, months and years ... What begins as a seed, almost imperceptible, ends up being a plant, a tree, which many times gives away its fruit ... to give life to other living beings. We like to eat the fruit, although sometimes we forget that to get there we need to plant, water, care, wait ... Nature has its times and its rhythms. And when we pretend otherwise we are violating reality.

Jesus also lived this. His growth was progressive. Whoever saw him from one day to the next would hardly perceive any external change. He was also a newborn, he was five years old, he turned twelve, he reached eighteen, twenty-five, thirty ... In the life expectancy of that time, we can say that, although his life was violently interrupted, Jesus went through all the ages of the human being: childhood, youth and maturity. And in that growth he knew the importance of the day to day, of each word and each gesture, of the perspective that the years give… And he experienced that the Father was at his side, at all times and under all circumstances. “The child was growing and becoming stronger, and was filled with wisdom; and the grace of God accompanied him ”.

This is our life. Sometimes we want to grow faster. Sometimes we would like to enjoy the fruits ... without having planted them ... or cared for ... or without waiting for them to be ripe. And experience teaches that it is not good to skip stages, but rather to know how to wait, in an attitude of welcome and responsibility.

The God of Life, who knows by experience what the rhythm of things is since his incarnation in the person of Jesus, accompanies this growth, encouraging it from within ... waiting for each one to bear the expected fruits, for life of the world. In what moment of your life are you today?

San Simeon

Lc 2, 22-35

Transcurrido el tiempo de la purificación de María, según la ley de Moisés, ella y José llevaron al niño a Jerusalén para presentarlo al Señor, de acuerdo con lo escrito en la ley: Todo primogénito varón será consagrado al Señor, y también para ofrecer, como dice la ley, un par de tórtolas o dos pichones.

Vivía en Jerusalén un hombre llamado Simeón, varón justo y temeroso de Dios, que aguardaba el consuelo de Israel; en él moraba el Espíritu Santo, el cual le había revelado que no moriría sin haber visto antes al Mesías del Señor. Movido por el Espíritu, fue al templo, y cuando José y María entraban con el niño Jesús para cumplir con lo prescrito por la ley, Simeón lo tomó en brazos y bendijo a Dios, diciendo:

“Señor, ya puedes dejar morir en paz a tu siervo,
según lo que me habías prometido,
porque mis ojos han visto a tu Salvador,
al que has preparado para bien de todos los pueblos;
luz que alumbra a las naciones
y gloria de tu pueblo, Israel”.

El padre y la madre del niño estaban admirados de semejantes palabras. Simeón los bendijo, y a María, la madre de Jesús, le anunció: “Este niño ha sido puesto para ruina y resurgimiento de muchos en Israel, como signo que provocará contradicción, para que queden al descubierto los pensamientos de todos los corazones. Y a ti, una espada te atravesará el alma”.

LK 2:22-35

When the days were completed for their purification
according to the law of Moses,
the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord,
just as it is written in the law of the Lord,
Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,
and to offer the sacrifice of
a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,
in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. 
This man was righteous and devout,
awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
that he should not see death
before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. 
He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus
to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

“Lord, now let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled:
my own eyes have seen the salvation
which you prepared in the sight of every people,
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
“Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
(and you yourself a sword will pierce)
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Meditacion:

La Palabra de hoy nos presenta lo que podríamos llamar un “personaje secundario” de los Evangelios, que sin embargo puede ser un icono de una vida fecunda y lograda. Se trata del anciano Simeón.

Simeón era un “hombre justo y piadoso”. Desde ese dato podemos imaginar que, como tantos hombres y mujeres de aquel tiempo –y de todos los tiempos, había vivido una vida más o menos sencilla, con sus luces y sombras, con sus certezas y dudas, en acogida de Dios y en servicio humilde hacia los demás. “Una buena persona”, “un hombre de Dios”, podrían comentar de él sus vecinos. Seguro que algunos simpatizaban con él más que otros, que ya se sabe que siempre pasa. Pero no tendría grandes enemigos declarados. Porque en su corazón había siempre un lugar para el perdón y la reconciliación. Quizá porque él también necesitó ser reconciliado y perdonado en más de una ocasión. Y era de los que, en medio de la confusión del mundo -en su época y en todas las épocas- no había perdido la esperanza. Y “aguardaba el consuelo de Israel”. Con una profunda confianza en el Dios en cuyas manos vivimos, nos movemos y existimos. Este es Simeón. Con toda su historia. “El Espíritu Santo moraba en él”.

Este es quien, en el relato de Lucas, toma al niño en brazos y bendice a Dios. Sus palabras son toda una muestra de confianza y de lucidez. Le dice a Dios que ya, cuando quiera, entiende que su vida ha llegado a su meta, porque se ha encontrado con el Dios-con-nosotros. Y a la vez que dice eso, anuncia ese futuro nuevo: ha llegado la “luz para alumbrar a las naciones”… y orienta a María con unas palabras que quieren fortalecerla para lo que pueda venir.

Simeón personifica la historia de Israel. Con todas sus idas y venidas, alianzas y traiciones, ahí está un pequeño resto manteniendo la confianza en el futuro nuevo que Dios les había prometido.

Simeón personifica la historia de cualquier persona. En búsqueda, con posibilidad de acoger al Dios-con-nosotros y de anunciar la novedad de su Reino.

Necesitamos más ancianos como Simeón. También jóvenes y personas de mediana edad. Que desde la experiencia de una vida vivida en confianza, no busquen aferrarse a nada, sino transmitir esa confianza a los que vienen por detrás. Tú también puedes ser Simeón.

Today's Word presents us with what we could call a “secondary character” of the Gospels, who nevertheless can be an icon of a fruitful and successful life. It is about the old Simeon.

Simeon was a "just and godly man." From that data we can imagine that, like so many men and women of that time - and of all times, he had lived a more or less simple life, with its lights and shadows, with its certainties and doubts, in acceptance of God and in service humble towards others. “A good person”, “a man of God”, his neighbors could comment on him. Surely some sympathized with him more than others, which is known to always happen. But he would have no great declared enemies. Because in his heart there was always a place for forgiveness and reconciliation. Perhaps because he also needed to be reconciled and forgiven on more than one occasion. And he was one of those who, in the midst of the world's turmoil - in his time and in all ages - had not lost hope. And "awaited the consolation of Israel." With a deep trust in the God in whose hands we live, move and exist. This is Simeon. With the whole story of him. "The Holy Spirit dwelt in him."

This is the one who, in Luke's account, takes the child in his arms and blesses God. His words are a sign of confidence and lucidity. He tells God that when he wants, he understands that his life has reached his goal, because he has met God-with-us. And at the same time that he says that, he announces that new future: the "light has come to enlighten the nations" ... and he guides Mary with a few words that want to strengthen her for what may come.

Simeon personifies the history of Israel. With all their comings and goings, alliances and betrayals, there is a small remnant maintaining confidence in the new future that God had promised them.

Simeon personifies the story of any person. In search of him, he with the possibility of welcoming God-with-us and of announcing the newness of his Kingdom.

We need more elders like Simeon. Also young and middle-aged people. That from the experience of a life lived in confidence, they do not seek to cling to anything, but rather transmit that confidence to those who come from behind. You too can be Simeon.

La luz en la tiniebla

Mt 2, 13-18

Después de que los magos partieron de Belén, el ángel del Señor se le apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: “Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre y huye a Egipto. Quédate allá hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo”.

José se levantó y esa misma noche tomó al niño y a su madre y partió para Egipto, donde permaneció hasta la muerte de Herodes. Así se cumplió lo que dijo el Señor por medio del profeta: De Egipto llamé a mi hijo.

Cuando Herodes se dio cuenta de que los magos lo habían engañado, se puso furioso y mandó matar, en Belén y sus alrededores, a todos los niños menores de dos años, conforme a la fecha que los magos le habían indicado.

Así se cumplieron las palabras del profeta Jeremías: En Ramá se ha escuchado un grito, se oyen llantos y lamentos: es Raquel que llora por sus hijos y no quiere que la consuelen, porque ya están muertos.

MT 2:13-18

When the magi had departed, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,
“Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt,
and stay there until I tell you.
Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night
and departed for Egypt.
He stayed there until the death of Herod,
that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled,
Out of Egypt I called my son.

When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi,
he became furious.
He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity
two years old and under,
in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi.
Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet:

A voice was heard in Ramah,
sobbing and loud lamentation;
Rachel weeping for her children,
and she would not be consoled,
since they were no more.

Meditacion:

¿Qué clase de persona ordena la matanza de bebés de dos años o menos? Alguien tan desequilibrado y paranoico como Herodes el Grande, esa clase de persona. Esta atrocidad muestra lo desesperado que debe haberse sentido. Posiblemente el nacimiento de un pequeño niño lo aterrorizaba porque sentía que su poder se le estaba escapando, y así era. Finalmente, su orden de matar a niños pequeños solamente era un golpe irracional y final de un destino que ya no podía evitar. Su oscuridad puede haberse desvanecido, pero él no caería sin luchar.

Puede sonar irónico, pero la desesperación de Herodes es otra señal de que la venida de Jesús marcó el inicio de una nueva era de libertad y esperanza. La luz de Jesús apenas estaba empezando a brillar, y los poderes de las tinieblas ya estaban temblando.

¿Cómo se relaciona esto con nosotros? Las obras de las tinieblas tales como el aborto, la eutanasia, la inmoralidad sexual y la corrupción en general continúan controlando el mundo. La oscuridad no está dispuesta a rendirse sin luchar, y pareciera que está ganando. O por lo menos, se está tomando mucho tiempo para admitir la derrota.

Hasta cierto punto, parecería razonable perder la esperanza por el mundo. Pero Dios no quiere que nos rindamos, y nuestra fe nos exhorta a mantener brillando la luz. A veces podríamos sentirnos tan indefensos como un niño en contra de tanto mal, pero es en esos momentos en que debemos recordar que exactamente así fue como Jesús llegó a este mundo. Solamente era un niño pequeño, pero su luz atrajo a los Magos que estaban a cientos de millas de distancia. Jesús era solo un niño, pero su luz llenó de terror a Herodes.

Podría parecer ambiguo y muy espiritual, pero lo mejor que tú podrías hacer es permitir que tu propia luz brille en la oscuridad. Muéstrale al mundo la diferencia que hace Jesús. Habla en contra del mal, pero de una forma que sea humilde y paciente. Permite que las palabras que tú dices, y las palabras que decides no pronunciar, demuestren la compasión y bondad del Señor. Nunca te olvides de que Cristo está en ti. Tú puedes hacer la diferencia.

“Ven, Señor, y brilla a través mío, te lo ruego, con la luz de tu amor.”

What kind of person orders the slaughter of babies two years old or younger? Someone as unbalanced and paranoid as Herod the Great, that kind of person. This atrocity shows how desperate he must have felt. Possibly the birth of a small child terrified him because he felt his power was slipping away from him, and it was. Ultimately, his order to kill young children was only an irrational and final blow to a fate he could no longer avoid. His darkness may have faded, but he would not fall without a fight.

It may sound ironic, but Herod's despair is another sign that the coming of Jesus ushered in a new era of freedom and hope. The light of Jesus was just beginning to shine, and the powers of darkness were already shaking.

How does this relate to us? Works of darkness such as abortion, euthanasia, sexual immorality, and general corruption continue to control the world. The dark is not willing to give up without a fight, and it seems like it's winning. Or at the very least, it's taking a long time to admit defeat.

Up to a point, it would seem reasonable to lose hope for the world. But God doesn't want us to give up, and our faith encourages us to keep the light shining. Sometimes we might feel as helpless as a child against so much evil, but it is in those moments that we must remember that this is exactly how Jesus came to this world. He alone was a little boy, but the light from him attracted the Magi who were hundreds of miles away. Jesus was only a child, but his light filled Herod with terror.

It might seem ambiguous and very spiritual, but the best thing you could do is allow your own light to shine in the dark. Show the world the difference Jesus makes. He speaks out against evil, but in a way that is humble and patient. He allows the words that you say, and the words that he chooses not to speak, to demonstrate the compassion and goodness of the Lord. Never forget that Christ is in you. You can make the difference.

"Come, Lord, and shine through me, I beg you, with the light of your love."

Mt 10, 17-22

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “Cuídense de la gente, porque los llevarán a los tribunales, los azotarán en las sinagogas, los llevarán ante gobernadores y reyes por mi causa; así darán testimonio de mí ante ellos y ante los paganos. Pero, cuando los enjuicien, no se preocupen por lo que van a decir o por la forma de decirlo, porque, en ese momento se les inspirará lo que han de decir. Pues no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará por ustedes.

“Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,

or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,

Meditacion:

Posiblemente ayer hubo un intercambio de regalos en tu casa y sabes que más que el regalo mismo, “la intención es lo que cuenta”, pues lo que genera impacto es el símbolo del afecto que contiene. Después de todo, tu esperanza es que el regalo ayude a quien lo recibe a recordarte con aprecio. Se podría decir que cuando damos un regalo es como decirle al otro: “recibe mi espíritu”.

Esta es una forma de ver las últimas palabras de San Esteban, el primer mártir de la Iglesia. Por muy difícil que debe haber sido su último día en la tierra, lo que Esteban más anhelaba era que Dios aceptara la ofrenda de su vida. Él quería ofrecerle al Señor el regalo de su propio corazón entregado con gratitud por todo lo que Cristo había hecho por él.

Todos los días, hombres y mujeres valientes alrededor del mundo ofrecen su vida como un regalo al Señor, y no se trata solo de mártires. Pueden ser personas ordinarias como tú, también. Piensa en todas las formas en que te sacrificas por tu familia: Dejas de lado tus preferencias y pones en primer lugar las de tu esposo o esposa y tus hijos. Te levantas temprano para asegurarte de que todo se desarrolle con facilidad y a veces sacrificas el sueño rezando y preocupándote por las personas que amas y que están luchando. Te muerdes la lengua para no decir ciertas cosas, cambias tus planes, perdonas y tienes paciencia. Conforme haces cada una de estas cosas, puedes seguir el ejemplo de Esteban y decir: Señor, “recibe mi espíritu”.

Desde luego, tú no eres perfecto, pero si estás intentando mostrar amor a través de tus palabras y acciones, las personas a tu alrededor lo notarán y tendrá efecto sobre ellos. Y si necesitas más gracia, no temas en pedírsela a Jesús, quien está intercediendo por ti delante del Padre, tal como lo vio Esteban.

La mejor de las noticias es que cuando entregas tu espíritu a Dios como un regalo, ¡él te recibe a ti! Él toma tu espíritu, lo llena de su gracia y te lo devuelve transformado. Dios ve tus sacrificios y los regalos que ofreces a aquellos a los que amas, y cada uno de esos regalos, lo llena de alegría

You wake up early to make sure everything runs smoothly and sometimes you sacrifice sleep by praying and caring for the people you love who are struggling. You bite your tongue to not say certain things, you change your plans, you forgive and you are patient. As you do each of these things, you can follow Stephen's example and say, Lord, "receive my spirit."

Of course, you are not perfect, but if you are trying to show love through your words and actions, the people around you will notice it and it will have an effect on them. And if you need more grace, don't be afraid to ask Jesus, who is interceding for you before the Father, just as Esteban saw it.

The best news is that when you give your spirit to God as a gift, he receives you! He takes your spirit, fills it with his grace and returns it to you transformed. God sees your sacrifices and the gifts you offer to those you love, and each of those gifts fills him with joy.
