Mt 26, 14-25

En aquel tiempo, uno de los Doce, llamado Judas Iscariote, fue a ver a los sumos sacerdotes y les dijo: “¿Cuánto me dan si les entrego a Jesús?” Ellos quedaron en darle treinta monedas de plata. Y desde ese momento andaba buscando una oportunidad para entregárselo.

El primer día de la fiesta de los panes Ázimos, los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron: “¿Dónde quieres que te preparemos la cena de Pascua?” Él respondió: “Vayan a la ciudad, a casa de fulano y díganle: ‘El Maestro dice: Mi hora está ya cerca. Voy a celebrar la Pascua con mis discípulos en tu casa’ ”. Ellos hicieron lo que Jesús les había ordenado y prepararon la cena de Pascua.

Al atardecer, se sentó a la mesa con los Doce, y mientras cenaban, les dijo: “Yo les aseguro que uno de ustedes va a entregarme”. Ellos se pusieron muy tristes y comenzaron a preguntarle uno por uno: “¿Acaso soy yo, Señor?” Él respondió: “El que moja su pan en el mismo plato que yo, ése va a entregarme. Porque el Hijo del hombre va a morir, como está escrito de él; pero ¡ay de aquel por quien el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado! Más le valiera a ese hombre no haber nacido”. Entonces preguntó Judas, el que lo iba a entregar: “¿Acaso soy yo, Maestro?” Jesús le respondió: “Tú lo has dicho”.

One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, 
went to the chief priests and said,
“What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?”
They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Where do you want us to prepare
for you to eat the Passover?”
He said,
“Go into the city to a certain man and tell him,
‘The teacher says, My appointed time draws near; 
in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”‘“
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered,
and prepared the Passover.

When it was evening,
he reclined at table with the Twelve.
And while they were eating, he said, 
“Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
Deeply distressed at this,
they began to say to him one after another,
“Surely it is not I, Lord?”
He said in reply,
“He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me
is the one who will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,
“Surely it is not I, Rabbi?”
He answered, “You have said so.”

Meditacion:

En el Evangelio de hoy la traición, como asunto central, oculta un hecho importante: la preparación de la cena. No es una cena cualquiera. Es la última cena y da la impresión de que todos los protagonistas los saben. 

      Los discípulos han vivido con Jesús durante los últimos años. No ha sido solo su maestro sino algo más. Le han seguido por los caminos polvorientos de Judea, Samaría y Galilea. Han escuchado sus palabras. No han entendido todo lo que ha dicho pero saben que Jesús no es un predicador más. Hay algo diferente en él. Más allá de sus palabras han visto su forma de estar, de relacionarse con los que sufren, con los oprimidos por el mal y la enfermedad. Se han dado cuenta de que su presencia era sanadora y que abría caminos de esperanza para los que sólo tenían un futuro negro, oscuro e incierto por delante.  

      Ahora saben, aunque no se atrevan a decirlo, que esa historia está a punto de terminar. Y que la cena de Pascua que se avecina no va a ser una mas de las que han venido celebrando todos los años. No va a ser diferente por la comida sino porque saben que algo se va a romper para siempre. La cercanía con Jesús, su maestro y señor, se va a quebrar. Hay nubes de tormenta en el horizonte. El que ha sido creador de esperanza y vida para tantos, tiene la muerte acechando en su propio horizonte. Por eso la cena que van a preparar no es normal. 

      También Judas sabe que va a ser la última cena. Él se va a encargar de cortar esa historia, de romper las esperanzas y el futuro. Quizá porque no ha entendido nada. Lo que él esperaba ve que no se va a hacer realidad. No tiene sentido ni seguir a Jesús ni seguir con Jesús. Judas es el hombre sin esperanza que en su desesperación en lugar de agarrarse al que le puede salvar decide abandonarle, traicionarle. Si no hay salvación para él, que no la haya para nadie. ¡Qué error más grande!

      Nosotros sabemos ahora que esa última cena culminará en la resurrección, en el amanecer de una nueva vida y de una nueva esperanza. Pero hay muchos que viven en la desesperación más absoluta. Hoy es un buen día para acordarnos de ellos en nuestra oración. Y si a alguno conocemos, de acercarnos a él o ella y, con nuestra presencia, abrir un hueco para la luz y la esperanza en medio de su noche. No se trata de acusar y condenar sino de tender la mano y salvar.

In today's Gospel betrayal, as a central issue, hides an important fact: the preparation of dinner. It is not just any dinner. It is the last supper and it seems that all the protagonists know them.

      The disciples have lived with Jesus for the past few years. He has not only been his teacher but something else. They have followed him through the dusty roads of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee. They have heard his words. They have not understood everything he has said but they know that Jesus is not just another preacher. There is something different about him. Beyond his words, they have seen his way of being, of relating to those who suffer, to those oppressed by evil and disease. They have realized that his presence was healing and that he opened paths of hope for those who only had a black, dark and uncertain future ahead of them.

      Now they know, even if they dare not say it, that this story is about to end. And that the Easter dinner that is coming will not be one of those that have been celebrated every year. It will not be different because of the food but because they know that something is going to break forever. The closeness to Jesus, his master and master, is going to break. There are storm clouds on the horizon. The one who has been the creator of hope and life for so many, has death lurking on his own horizon. That is why the dinner they are going to prepare is not normal.

      Judas also knows that it is going to be the last supper. He is going to be in charge of cutting that history, of breaking hopes and the future. Perhaps because he has not understood anything. What he expected is not going to come true. He makes no sense to neither follow Jesus nor continue with Jesus. Judas is the man without hope who, in his despair, instead of clinging to the one who can save him, decides to abandon him, betray him. If there is no salvation for him, let there be no salvation for anyone. What a big mistake!

      We now know that this last supper will culminate in the resurrection, in the dawn of new life and new hope. But there are many who live in utter despair. Today is a good day to remember them in our prayer. And if we know someone, to approach him or her and, with our presence, open a hole for light and hope in the middle of their night. It is not about accusing and condemning but about reaching out and saving.

En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús estaba a la mesa con sus discípulos, se conmovió profundamente y declaró: “Yo les aseguro que uno de ustedes me va a entregar”. Los discípulos se miraron perplejos unos a otros, porque no sabían de quién hablaba. Uno de ellos, al que Jesús tanto amaba, se hallaba reclinado a su derecha. Simón Pedro le hizo una seña y le preguntó: “¿De quién lo dice?” Entonces él, apoyándose en el pecho de Jesús, le preguntó: “Señor, ¿quién es?” Le contestó Jesús: “Aquel a quien yo le dé este trozo de pan, que voy a mojar”. Mojó el pan y se lo dio a Judas, hijo de Simón el Iscariote; y tras el bocado, entró en él Satanás.

Jesús le dijo entonces a Judas: “Lo que tienes que hacer, hazlo pronto”. Pero ninguno de los comensales entendió a qué se refería; algunos supusieron que, como Judas tenía a su cargo la bolsa, Jesús le había encomendado comprar lo necesario para la fiesta o dar algo a los pobres. Judas, después de tomar el bocado, salió inmediatamente. Era de noche.

Una vez que Judas se fue, Jesús dijo: “Ahora ha sido glorificado el Hijo del hombre y Dios ha sido glorificado en él. Si Dios ha sido glorificado en él, también Dios lo glorificará en sí mismo y pronto lo glorificará.

Hijitos, todavía estaré un poco con ustedes. Me buscarán, pero como les dije a los judíos, así se lo digo a ustedes ahora: ‘A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir’ ”. Simón Pedro le dijo: “Señor, ¿a dónde vas?” Jesús le respondió: “A donde yo voy, no me puedes seguir ahora; me seguirás más tarde”. Pedro replicó: “Señor, ¿por qué no puedo seguirte ahora? Reclining at table with his disciples, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified,
“Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.
One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved,
was reclining at Jesus’ side.
So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.
He leaned back against Jesus’ chest and said to him,
“Master, who is it?”
Jesus answered,
“It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it.”
So he dipped the morsel and took it and handed it to Judas,
son of Simon the Iscariot.
After Judas took the morsel, Satan entered him.
So Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
Now none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.
Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him,
“Buy what we need for the feast,”
or to give something to the poor.
So Judas took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.

When he had left, Jesus said,
“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself,
and he will glorify him at once.
My children, I will be with you only a little while longer.
You will look for me, and as I told the Jews,
‘Where I go you cannot come,’ so now I say it to you.”

Simon Peter said to him, “Master, where are you going?”
Jesus answered him,
“Where I am going, you cannot follow me now,
though you will follow later.”
Peter said to him,
“Master, why can I not follow you now? 
I will lay down my life for you.”
Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me?
Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow
before you deny me three times.”

Meditacion:

Observa lo que sucedió en la Última Cena. Jesús sabe que Judas lo va a traicionar y que está destinado a un trágico final (Juan 13, 21-21; 17, 12). También sabe que Pedro le va a fallar, pero Pedro se arrepentirá y se hará más fiel (Juan 13, 36-38). Pero fíjate en la forma en que Jesús los trata: les lava los pies y luego comparte su última comida con los dos. El Señor desea asegurarse de que ninguno de ellos experimente el rechazo o la condenación de parte de él, solo quiere darles su amor.

Jesús también sabe todo sobre tu futuro: Que tendrás algunos grandes éxitos y algunos grandes fracasos, pero él nunca se rinde contigo. Así que ten la seguridad de que no tienes que averiguar o hacer todo perfectamente. Debido a que Jesús se queda a tu lado, siempre hay esperanza para ti y para tus seres queridos. Y como dice el salmista: “Por todos lados me has rodeado; tienes puesta tu mano sobre mí… Habías señalado los días de mi vida cuando aún no existía ninguno de ellos” (Salmo 139 (138), 5. 16).

La primera Semana Santa no es simplemente algo que sucedió hace mucho tiempo. Sus efectos se extienden hasta el día de hoy, y continuarán en un futuro que solo Jesús conoce. Su amor y su gracia siguen disponibles para ti. Tal vez has estado alejado de él por mucho tiempo o podría ser que sientas la necesidad de caminar más cerca de él. Lo que sea que haya sucedido en tu pasado y que vaya a suceder en tu futuro o dónde te encuentres hoy, Jesús también está ahí, así que acude a él y acepta su increíble misericordia.

Observe what happened at the Last Supper. Jesus knows that Judas is going to betray him and that he is destined for a tragic end (John 13, 21-21; 17, 12). He also knows that Peter will fail him, but Peter will repent and become more faithful (John 13, 36-38). But notice the way Jesus treats them: he washes their feet and then shares his last meal with both of them. The Lord wants to make sure that none of them experience rejection or condemnation from him, he just wants to give them his love.

Jesus also knows everything about your future: that you will have some great successes and some great failures, but he never gives up on you. So rest assured, you don't have to figure out or do everything perfectly. Because Jesus stays by your side, there is always hope for you and your loved ones. And as the psalmist says: “On every side you have surrounded me; You have laid your hand on me… You had appointed the days of my life when none of them existed yet ”(Psalm 139 (138), 5. 16).

The first Easter is not simply something that happened a long time ago. Its effects extend to this day, and will continue into a future known only to Jesus. His love and his grace are still available to you. Maybe you've been away from him for a long time or it could be that you feel the need to walk closer to him. Whatever happened in your past and what is going to happen in your future or where you are today, Jesus is there too, so go to him and accept his incredible mercy.

Jn 12, 1-11

Seis días antes de la Pascua, fue Jesús a Betania, donde vivía Lázaro, a quien había resucitado de entre los muertos. Allí le ofrecieron una cena; Marta servía y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban con él a la mesa. María tomó entonces una libra de perfume de nardo auténtico, muy costoso, le ungió a Jesús los pies con él y se los enjugó con su cabellera, y la casa se llenó con la fragancia del perfume.

Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de los discípulos, el que iba a entregar a Jesús, exclamó: “¿Por qué no se ha vendido ese perfume en trescientos denarios para dárselos a los pobres?” Esto lo dijo, no porque le importaran los pobres, sino porque era ladrón, y como tenía a su cargo la bolsa, robaba lo que echaban en ella.

Entonces dijo Jesús: “Déjala. Esto lo tenía guardado para el día de mi sepultura; porque a los pobres los tendrán siempre con ustedes, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán”.

Mientras tanto, la multitud de judíos, que se enteró de que Jesús estaba allí, acudió, no sólo por Jesús, sino también para ver a Lázaro, a quien el Señor había resucitado de entre los muertos. Los sumos sacerdotes deliberaban para matar a Lázaro, porque a causa de él, muchos judíos se separaban y creían en Jesús.

Jn 12:1-11

Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany,
where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served,
while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him. 
Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil
made from genuine aromatic nard
and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair;
the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. 
Then Judas the Iscariot, one of his disciples,
and the one who would betray him, said,
“Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days’ wages
and given to the poor?”
He said this not because he cared about the poor
but because he was a thief and held the money bag
and used to steal the contributions.
So Jesus said, “Leave her alone.
Let her keep this for the day of my burial.
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

The large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came,
not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus,
whom he had raised from the dead.
And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too,
because many of the Jews were turning away
and believing in Jesus because of him.

Primer día de esta semana en la que vamos a celebrar el misterio de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Como es misterio, no vamos a tratar de explicarlo. Se trata sencillamente de contemplar con el corazón abierto. Se trata de acoger sin condiciones. Algo parecido a lo que hicieron Lázaro, Marta y María. Eran los amigos de Jesús. Confianza de años. No hacían preguntas. Simplemente tenían abierta su casa para él. Le querían y le querían sin condiciones. Así es el verdadero amor, la verdadera amistad. Jesús ya era de la familia. Todo lo que había en la casa era poco para ofrecer a aquel amigo que les visitaba de vez en cuando. Los mejores manjares, el mejor servicio. Y, si se tercia y hay posibilidad, el mejor perfume para ungir sus pies cansados del camino. 

      Aunque siempre hay alguno que estropea la fiesta y se pone en plan crítico. ¿Para que vaciar la despensa? ¿No es uno más de la familia? Se le saca lo de todos los días y basta. Y, ¿qué es eso de andar derrochando perfumes cuando eso podía ayudar a los pobres? Está claro que Judas no había entendido mucho lo que era el amor incondicional, ni lo que era una relación entre personas generosa y abierta. Da la impresión de que Judas estaba acostumbrado a calcular, a razonar todo. Lázaro, Marta y María habían entendido la novedad de Jesús y lo manifestaban en su acogida sin límites, en su amistad sin condiciones. 

      En esta semana que comenzamos llena de celebraciones con muchas palabras y muchos símbolos y muchos ritos nos conviene imitar la actitud de Lázaro, Marta y María. No se trata de calcular y razonar. Se trata simplemente de acoger, de contemplar. Se trata de hacer de nuestro corazón la casa familiar donde Jesús sea acogido y donde nosotros simplemente estemos a su lado, sintiendo con él, acompañándole. Sin más. Porque el misterio no se descifra ni se estudia ni se cuenta en un libro a base de argumentos y razonamientos. El misterio se contempla. Y se va dejando que, poco a poco, esa plenitud del amor de Dios manifestado en la vida de Jesús y, sobre todo, en sus últimos momentos, vaya llegando a nuestro corazón. Y nos inunde de alegría y de esperanza. Y nos vaya haciendo capaces de amar y acoger y servir a nuestros hermanos y a descubrir en ellos el misterio del amor de Dios hecho carne.

It is clear that Judas had not understood much what unconditional love was, nor what a generous and open relationship between people was. It seems that Judas was used to calculating, reasoning everything. Lazarus, Martha and Mary had understood the novelty of Jesus and they manifested it in their welcome without limits, in his unconditional friendship.

      In this week that we begin full of celebrations with many words and many symbols and many rites, it is convenient for us to imitate the attitude of Lázaro, Marta and María. It is not about calculating and reasoning. It is simply a matter of welcoming, of contemplating. It is about making our hearts the family home where Jesus is welcomed and where we are simply by his side, feeling with him, accompanying him. No more. Because the mystery is not deciphered or studied or told in a book based on arguments and reasoning. The mystery is contemplated. And little by little, that fullness of God's love manifested in the life of Jesus and, above all, in his last moments, is allowed to reach our hearts. And it floods us with joy and hope. And we are able to love and welcome and serve our brothers and sisters and to discover in them the mystery of the love of God made flesh.

Jn 11, 45-56

En aquel tiempo, muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de Marta y María, al ver que Jesús había resucitado a Lázaro, creyeron en él. Pero algunos de entre ellos fueron a ver a los fariseos y les contaron lo que había hecho Jesús.

Entonces los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron al sanedrín y decían: “¿Qué será bueno hacer? Ese hombre está haciendo muchos prodigios. Si lo dejamos seguir así, todos van a creer en él, van a venir los romanos y destruirán nuestro templo y nuestra nación”.

Pero uno de ellos, llamado Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: “Ustedes no saben nada. No comprenden que conviene que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que toda la nación perezca”. Sin embargo, esto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que, siendo sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús iba a morir por la nación, y no sólo por la nación, sino también para congregar en la unidad a los hijos de Dios, que estaban dispersos. Por lo tanto, desde aquel día tomaron la decisión de matarlo.

Por esta razón, Jesús ya no andaba públicamente entre los judíos, sino que se retiró a la ciudad de Efraín, en la región contigua al desierto y allí se quedó con sus discípulos.

Se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos y muchos de las regiones circunvecinas llegaron a Jerusalén antes de la Pascua, para purificarse. Buscaban a Jesús en el templo y se decían unos a otros: “¿Qué pasará? ¿No irá a venir para la fiesta?”

Jn 11:45-56

Many of the Jews who had come to Mary
and seen what Jesus had done began to believe in him.
But some of them went to the Pharisees
and told them what Jesus had done. 
So the chief priests and the Pharisees
convened the Sanhedrin and said,
“What are we going to do? 
This man is performing many signs.
If we leave him alone, all will believe in him,
and the Romans will come
and take away both our land and our nation.”
But one of them, Caiaphas,
who was high priest that year, said to them,
“You know nothing,
nor do you consider that it is better for you
that one man should die instead of the people,
so that the whole nation may not perish.”
He did not say this on his own,
but since he was high priest for that year,
he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
and not only for the nation,
but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.
So from that day on they planned to kill him.

So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews,
but he left for the region near the desert,
to a town called Ephraim,
and there he remained with his disciples.

Now the Passover of the Jews was near,
and many went up from the country to Jerusalem
before Passover to purify themselves.
They looked for Jesus and said to one another
as they were in the temple area, “What do you think?
That he will not come to the feast?”

Meditacion:

Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos que se oponían a Jesús se maravillaban con sus milagros. Ellos reconocían el gran poder de Dios en él, sin embargo le tenían miedo (Juan 11, 47-48). Entraban en pánico al pensar que estos signos poderosos podrían conducir a la destrucción de Jerusalén. La ciudad santa estaba en la cima de su grandeza y fortaleza, y ellos querían que permaneciera así. Sin embargo, Jerusalén era la ciudad de Dios, y Jesús estaba realizando señales en el nombre de Dios. ¿Qué razón podrían tener para temer que Dios permitiría su destrucción?

El problema era que estos líderes religiosos buscaban entender y proteger la obra de Dios solamente a través de recursos humanos. A pesar de todo lo que habían visto y oído sobre los milagros de Jesús, su pensamiento no aceptaba la intervención divina. Algo milagroso estaba sucediendo, ellos lo admitieron, pero se oponían porque eso no calzaba con sus perspectivas limitadas.

Pero antes de que rebajemos demasiado a estas personas, recordemos que ellos no son los villanos de un libro de cuentos. Eran seres humanos con los mismos prejuicios y limitaciones que nosotros tenemos.

Nuestros caminos simplemente no son los caminos de Dios, así como nuestros pensamientos no son los suyos (Isaías 55, 8). A Dios le agrada sacudir las suposiciones humanas, le gusta sorprendernos para cumplir sus planes fuera de nuestras expectativas humanas. Entonces, ¿cómo debemos responder nosotros? Manteniendo un corazón humilde. Recuerda, no tenemos todas las respuestas y no siempre vemos el cuadro completo. El poder de Dios es infinito, él puede hacer cosas en situaciones que nosotros simplemente no podemos concebir. Nosotros debemos estar preparados para admitir esto en cada giro que damos.

Al entrar en la Semana Santa, permite que Dios te sorprenda. El Señor anhela tocar tu corazón, especialmente mientras tú recuerdas y conmemoras la muerte y resurrección de su Hijo. Busca los signos que él está realizando. Si ves que Dios está haciendo algo poderoso, tal vez algo que tú no entiendes, no seas demasiado rápido para juzgarlo ni rechazarlo, pregúntale por lo que está haciendo. ¡Podría ser que tenga algo maravilloso que mostrarte!

“Espíritu Santo, abre los ojos de mi corazón para ver y recibir a Jesús en esta semana.”

En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús terminó de hablar, los judíos cogieron piedras para apedrearlo. Jesús les dijo: “He realizado ante ustedes muchas obras buenas de parte del Padre, ¿por cuál de ellas me quieren apedrear?”

Le contestaron los judíos: “No te queremos apedrear por ninguna obra buena, sino por blasfemo, porque tú, no siendo más que un hombre, pretendes ser Dios”. Jesús les replicó: “¿No está escrito en su ley: Yo les he dicho: Ustedes son dioses? Ahora bien, si ahí se llama dioses a quienes fue dirigida la palabra de Dios (y la Escritura no puede equivocarse), ¿cómo es que a mí, a quien el Padre consagró y envió al mundo, me llaman blasfemo porque he dicho: ‘Soy Hijo de Dios’? Si no hago las obras de mi Padre, no me crean. Pero si las hago, aunque no me crean a mí, crean a las obras, para que puedan comprender que el Padre está en mí y yo en el Padre”. Trataron entonces de apoderarse de él, pero se les escapó de las manos.

Luego regresó Jesús al otro lado del Jordán, al lugar donde Juan había bautizado en un principio y se quedó allí. Muchos acudieron a él y decían: “Juan no hizo ningún signo; pero todo lo que Juan decía de éste, era verdad”. Y muchos creyeron en él allí.

Jn 10:31-42

The Jews picked up rocks to stone Jesus.
Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father.
For which of these are you trying to stone me?”
The Jews answered him,
“We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy.
You, a man, are making yourself God.”
Jesus answered them,
“Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, ‘You are gods”‘? 
If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came,
and Scripture cannot be set aside,
can you say that the one
whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world
blasphemes because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 
If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me;
but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me,
believe the works, so that you may realize and understand
that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
Then they tried again to arrest him;
but he escaped from their power.

He went back across the Jordan
to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained. 
Many came to him and said,
“John performed no sign,
but everything John said about this man was true.”
And many there began to believe in him.

Esta no era la primera vez que los enemigos de Jesús recogían piedras para lanzárselas. Constantemente estaban buscando sorprenderlo en un paso en falso. Sin embargo, a pesar de esto, Jesús seguía invitándolos a creer en él. En el Evangelio de hoy, les suplica que dejen a un lado su escepticismo sobre las palabras que él había pronunciado y en su lugar se fijaran en sus acciones. Parecía que Jesús les estaba diciendo: Si mis palabras les resultan confusas, revisen mis obras. ¿No son suficiente evidencia para que ustedes comiencen a creer en mí?

¿Cuáles son esas “obras”? Un hombre que estuvo paralizado por treinta y ocho años fue completamente sanado (Juan 5). Un par de peces y cinco panes alimentaron a cinco mil personas (Juan 6). Una mujer descubierta en adulterio se salvó de ser apedreada y recibió misericordia (Juan 8). Un hombre que estaba ciego desde su nacimiento ahora podía ver (Juan 9). ¡Solo Dios podía hacer estas cosas!

Jesús también desea que sus obras te hablen a ti. Probablemente tú ya conoces los relatos sobre él y los impresionantes milagros que realizó. Pero no te equivoques, él sigue haciendo su obra hoy en día, incluso está haciendo su obra en las personas que te rodean. Por eso te invito a que le pidas al Espíritu Santo que te ayude a reconocer estas obras. Podrías descubrir que una mujer de tu parroquia que recientemente quedó viuda es capaz de recuperar la alegría. O tal vez te des cuenta de que tu vecino ha estado cuidando a su esposa enferma durante meses sin quejarse en ningún momento. Incluso tú mismo podrías enfrentar una necesidad financiera y recibir un bono en el momento apropiado.

Estos momentos de gracia provienen de las manos de Dios. Entre más puedes entender que lo son, más podrás creer, especialmente cuando la duda te haga tambalearte. Fija tus ojos en Jesús, tanto en lo que él ha hecho en el pasado como en lo que está haciendo ahora. También cree en que él quiere hacer su obra pacientemente en tu vida. Si él siguió intentando convencer a sus enemigos, ¿por qué no se esforzaría de la misma manera para ayudarte a conocerlo mejor?

“Señor, abre mis ojos, te lo ruego, para ver las obras que realizas en mi vida y en quienes me rodean, y creer en ti.”

This was not the first time that Jesus' enemies had picked up stones to throw at him. They were constantly looking to surprise him in a misstep. Yet despite this, Jesus kept inviting them to believe in him. In today's Gospel, he pleads with you to put aside his skepticism about the words he had spoken and instead look at his actions. It seemed that Jesus was saying to them: If my words are confusing to you, check my works. Isn't that enough evidence for you to start believing in me?

What are these "works"? A man who was paralyzed for thirty-eight years was completely healed (John 5). A couple of fish and five loaves fed 5,000 people (John 6). A woman discovered in adultery was saved from being stoned and received mercy (John 8). A man who was blind from his birth could now see (John 9). Only God could do these things!

Jesus also wants his works to speak to you. You probably already know the stories about him and the impressive miracles he performed. But make no mistake, he is still doing his work today, he is even doing his work in the people around you. That is why I invite you to ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognize these works. You may find that a recently widowed woman in your parish is able to regain joy. Or maybe you realize that your neighbor has been taking care of his sick wife for months without ever complaining. Even you yourself could face a financial need and receive a bonus at the appropriate time.

These moments of grace come from the hands of God. The more you can understand that they are, the more you can believe, especially when doubt makes you stagger. Fix your eyes on Jesus, both what he has done in the past and what he is doing now. Also believe that he wants to do his work patiently in your life. If he kept trying to convince his enemies, why wouldn't he go the same way to help you get to know him better?

"Lord, open my eyes, I beg you, to see the works you do in my life and in those around me, and believe in you."

En aquel tiempo, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret, a una virgen desposada con un varón de la estirpe de David, llamado José. La virgen se llamaba María.

Entró el ángel a donde ella estaba y le dijo: “Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo”. Al oír estas palabras, ella se preocupó mucho y se preguntaba qué querría decir semejante saludo.

El ángel le dijo: “No temas, María, porque has hallado gracia ante Dios. Vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. Él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre, y él reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reinado no tendrá fin”.

María le dijo entonces al ángel: “¿Cómo podrá ser esto, puesto que yo permanezco virgen?” El ángel le contestó: “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

¿Te has preguntado alguna vez por qué el ángel Gabriel saludó a la Virgen María con estas palabras? Tal vez quería que María tuviera la certeza de que Dios ya la había llenado con toda la gracia que necesitaría para aceptar dar a luz al Hijo de Dios. Quizá quería recordarle que ella podía contar con que Dios siempre estaba a su lado, no solo en aquel momento sagrado.

María no tuvo mucho tiempo para reflexionar en el saludo del ángel hasta después de haber aceptado el plan de Dios. Pero probablemente pensó a menudo en el saludo conforme el bebé crecía en su vientre. Ella sabía que lo que Dios le estaba pidiendo no iba a ser sencillo, sin duda este niño era especial. ¿Cómo iba ella a criar a Jesús para que fuera rey y asumiera el trono de David, como dijo el ángel? (Lucas 1, 32-33). Cuando estas preguntas surgían en su mente, siempre podía recordar las palabras del ángel Gabriel: Dios estaba con ella y su gracia también.

¿Te ha pedido el Señor que hagas algo difícil a lo largo de tu vida? Tal vez te dio un hijo con necesidades especiales para educar o estás cuidando a tu esposo o esposa o a tu padre enfermo o estás experimentando tensiones en tu matrimonio. Todos hemos enfrentado situaciones en las que Dios nos está pidiendo que hagamos algo que parece sobrepasarnos. Es posible que hayamos tenido que decir “sí” al Señor no una sino muchas veces mientras luchamos por ser obedientes a su plan en nuestra vida.

Pero lo que el ángel le dijo a María también es cierto para nosotros. María nació sin pecado original, pero nosotros a través del bautismo, también fuimos llenados de la gracia de Dios, él habita en nosotros. Eso significa que siempre está a nuestro lado y que su gracia siempre está disponible para nosotros.

Gracias a la respuesta afirmativa que María dio al ángel, Jesús vino al mundo para salvarnos y compartir su vida divina con nosotros. Have you ever wondered why the angel Gabriel greeted the Virgin Mary with these words? Perhaps he wanted Mary to be certain that God had already filled her with all the grace she would need to agree to give birth to the Son of God. Perhaps she wanted to remind him that she could count on God always being by her side, not just in that sacred moment.

Mary did not have much time to reflect on the angel's greeting until after she had accepted God's plan. But she probably thought of the greeting often as the baby grew in her womb. She knew that what God was asking of her was not going to be easy, without a doubt this child was special. How was she going to raise Jesus to be king and assume the throne of David, as the angel said? (Luke 1, 32-33). When these questions arose in her mind, she could always remember the words of the angel Gabriel: God was with her and her grace was also.

Has the Lord asked you to do something difficult throughout your life? Perhaps he gave you a special needs child to educate or you are caring for your husband or wife or your sick father or you are experiencing stresses in your marriage. We have all faced situations in which God is asking us to do something that seems to overwhelm us. We may have had to say “yes” to the Lord not once but many times as we struggled to be obedient to His plan for our lives.

But what the angel said to Mary is also true for us. Mary was born without original sin, but through baptism we were also filled with God's grace, he dwells in us. That means that he is always by our side and that his grace is always available to us.

Thanks to the affirmative answer that Mary gave to the angel, Jesus came into the world to save us and share his divine life with us. Now we can go forward, each day, taking one step at a time to do what God asks of us, because we too are full of “grace” (Luke 1:28). So don't be afraid to accept what he is asking you to do.

"Dear Lord, you give me the grace I need to accept your will for my life, and for that I thank you with all my heart."
