Mc 9, 30-37

GospelMK 9:30-3
Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee,
but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
He was teaching his disciples and telling them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him,
and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to question him.
but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
He was teaching his disciples and telling them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him,
and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to question him.
They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house,
he began to ask them,
“What were you arguing about on the way?”
But they remained silent.
For they had been discussing among themselves on the way
who was the greatest.
Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them,
“If anyone wishes to be first,
he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
Taking a child, he placed it in their midst,
and putting his arms around it, he said to them,
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me,
receives not me but the One who sent me.”
he began to ask them,
“What were you arguing about on the way?”
But they remained silent.
For they had been discussing among themselves on the way
who was the greatest.
Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them,
“If anyone wishes to be first,
he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
Taking a child, he placed it in their midst,
and putting his arms around it, he said to them,
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me,
receives not me but the One who sent me.”

Meditacion:
Amen

Today we read in the Gospel that when Jesus went with his disciples to Jerusalem, he predicted his death and resurrection a second time. But they had a dull mind and did not understand what Jesus meant or who Jesus really was. Instead of helping each other, everyone wanted to be the most important; but Jesus demonstrated his greatness by giving himself to others and giving his own life for the salvation of all.
Christ said: "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last of all, and serve them all" (Mark 9, 35). Then he placed a small child in the midst of his disciples to make them understand that, just as he had come to serve the helpless and marginalized without expecting any retribution, they should do the same.
But, since God's ideas are so diametrically opposed to human ones, the disciples were confused and did not understand how greatness was reached in the Kingdom of God. Don't we also often have misconceptions about it? To be great in the Kingdom of God, you don't necessarily have to be leaders in the church, in an apostolate, or in a charity or social service institution. These works are important and valuable, but they do not guarantee greatness in the Kingdom of God, unless they are fulfilled with great generosity and a humble attitude of service, like that of Christ, without expecting recognition or gratitude here on earth.
Husbands should help each other and encourage each other with love. Ordained ministers and those with religious vows can do the same. Parents can serve their children by setting an example: teaching them about God's love, obedience and respect. Children can serve their parents by respecting and obeying them, instead of being disobedient, rebellious and criticizing them behind their backs. We can also serve the needy of our communities (the homeless, the disabled, the elderly, the sick) by providing them with company, bringing them food and sharing God's love. With our testimony and our prayers we can serve those who have contact with us.
"Heavenly Father, help me to recognize that you are the source of all good and that it is my turn to serve with joy because, in doing so, I serve Christ Jesus, my Lord." Amen
