En aquel tiempo, Jesús comenzó a recorrer ciudades y poblados predicando la buena nueva del Reino de Dios. Lo acompañaban los Doce y algunas mujeres que habían sido libradas de espíritus malignos y curadas de varias enfermedades. Entre ellas iban María, llamada Magdalena, de la que habían salido siete demonios; Juana, mujer de Cusa, el administrador de Herodes; Susana y otras muchas, que los ayudaban con sus propios bienes.

Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another,
preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.
Accompanying him were the Twelve
and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities,
Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza,
Susanna, and many others
who provided for them out of their resources.

Meditacion:

Muchas mujeres.  Comienza el evangelista hablando de “algunas”, y, en seguida, nos advierte de que eran “muchas que le asistían con sus bienes”. Esta escena era, para aquel tiempo y aquella cultura, insólita y llamativa. No cabía en la cabeza de los jefes religiosos. Nosotros nos hemos acostumbrado a encontrarlas, en primera fila, en el Calvario, junto a la Cruz de Jesús, o en la mañana de la resurrección, como pregoneras. Pero, en aquel tiempo, solo podía ser cosa del Maestro de Galilea. Solo él podía romper tantos prejuicios y barreras.

El Evangelio lo dibuja con claridad. Nos habla del número, nos cita sus nombres -Susana, Juana, María Magdalena-, y nos ofrece informaciones interesantes. Alguna estaba casada (más insólito todavía), otras habían sido sanadas por Jesús, otras “muchas” compartían sus bienes generosamente y -¡lo más importante!- pertenecían a la comunidad de Jesús, junto con los apóstoles. Aquí podemos traer a la memoria y repasar a tantas mujeres que desfilan por las páginas de los Evangelios. Y todas son tratadas con afecto, también las que han sido pecadoras. Es que Jesús es un hombre tan lleno de libertad como vacío de prejuicios y convencionalismos. Recordemos un solo acontecimiento, el encuentro de Jesús con la mujer samaritana, junto al pozo de Sicar. Sus mismos discípulos se sorprendieron de verlo hablando con una mujer. Y con razón: era mujer, a solas, estaba hablando de religión, la mujer era extranjera y pecadora. ¿Qué otros problemas podían acontecer? Jesús estaba afirmando con su conducta lo que, más tarde, nos diría el discípulo Pablo. Todos somos iguales en Cristo; iguales judíos y gentiles, iguales hombre y mujer. 

 Al mirar a estas mujeres acompañando al Maestro, debemos alegrarnos. Mujeres misioneras, mujeres en la comunidad de Jesús. Vamos a borrar nuestros  prejuicios sexistas, y preocuparnos más  del sentido de la mujer en la sociedad y en la Iglesia. Seamos los primeros en horrorizarnos, y luchar contra la violencia de género, contra la disminución de los derechos humanos en ámbito femenino, contra las mutilaciones vergonzosas, contra la muerte violenta de tantas mujeres, aun en países llamados desarrollados, etc. No apliquemos a las mujeres sofismas que se caen; por supuesto que, en la Iglesia, no hay que buscar el poder sino el servicio, pero, ¿no debe aplicarse este criterio evangélico también a los hombres, y no solo cuando se habla de la presencia de la mujer en la Iglesia? Para acallar las voces, quejosas con la escasa presencia de la mujer, se nos llena la boca proclamando que una mujer, María,  es la más grande criatura; entonces, ¿por qué albergar reticencias, al situar a la mujer en la Iglesia?. Más bien, hagamos memoria de tantas mujeres que han dado a luz, han alumbrado tanta vida en la Iglesia. Las conocidas: mártires, como Cecilia; místicas, como Teresa de Jesús; madres y educadoras como Joaquina Vedruna; mujeres de la caridad, como Luisa de Marillac. Sin olvidar a todas las mujeres anónimas que, en el hogar, en la escuela, en el trabajo, en organizaciones diversas están haciendo brillar un magnífico y fecundo testimonio cristiano. Amen

A lot of women. The evangelist begins by speaking of “some”, and then he warns us that there were “many who assisted him with their goods”. This scene was, for that time and that culture, unusual and striking. It did not fit in the head of the religious leaders. We have become used to finding them, in the first row, on Calvary, next to the Cross of Jesus, or on the morning of the resurrection, as proclaimers. But, at that time, it could only be the Master of Galilee. Only he could break so many prejudices and barriers.

The Gospel draws it clearly. He tells us about the number, quotes their names -Susana, Juana, María Magdalena-, and offers us interesting information. Some were married (even more unusual), others had been healed by Jesus, other "many" shared their goods generously and - most importantly! - belonged to the community of Jesus, along with the apostles. Here we can recall and review so many women who parade through the pages of the Gospels. And all are treated with affection, also those who have been sinful. It is that Jesus is a man as full of freedom as he is devoid of prejudices and conventions. Let us remember a single event, the meeting of Jesus with the Samaritan woman, near the well of Sychar. His own disciples were surprised to see him talking to a woman. And with good reason: she was a woman, alone, she was talking about religion, the woman was foreign and sinful. What other problems could occur? Jesus was affirming by his conduct what, later, the disciple Paul would tell us. We are all equal in Christ; equal Jews and gentiles, equal men and women.

 Looking at these women accompanying the Master, we should rejoice. Missionary women, women in the community of Jesus. We are going to erase our sexist prejudices, and care more about the meaning of women in society and in the Church. Let us be the first to be horrified, and fight against gender violence, against the diminution of human rights in the female sphere, against shameful mutilations, against the violent death of so many women, even in so-called developed countries, etc. Let us not apply sophistry to women who fall; Of course, in the Church, one should not seek power but service, but shouldn't this evangelical criterion also apply to men, and not only when talking about the presence of women in the Church? To silence the voices, complaining about the scarce presence of women, our mouths fill up proclaiming that a woman, Mary, is the greatest creature; then, why harbor reluctance, when placing women in the Church? Rather, let us remember so many women who have given birth, have illuminated so much life in the Church. The well-known ones: martyrs, like Cecilia; mystics, like Teresa de Jesús; mothers and educators like Joaquina Vedruna; women of charity, such as Louise de Marillac. Not forgetting all the anonymous women who, at home, at school, at work, in various organizations are making a magnificent and fruitful Christian witness shine. Amen
