Sigueme

Jn 21, 20-25

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a Pedro: "Sígueme". Pedro, volviendo la cara, vio que iba detrás de ellos el discípulo a quien Jesús amaba, el mismo que en la cena se había reclinado sobre su pecho y le había preguntado: 'Señor, ¿quién es el que te va a traicionar?' Al verlo, Pedro le dijo a Jesús: "Señor, ¿qué va a pasar con éste?" Jesús le respondió: "Si yo quiero que éste permanezca vivo hasta que yo vuelva, ¿a ti qué? Tú, sígueme".

Por eso comenzó a correr entre los hermanos el rumor de que ese discípulo no habría de morir. Pero Jesús no dijo que no moriría, sino: 'Si yo quiero que permanezca vivo hasta que yo vuelva, ¿a ti qué?'

Éste es el discípulo que atestigua estas cosas y las ha puesto por escrito, y estamos ciertos de que su testimonio es verdadero. Muchas otras cosas hizo Jesús y creo que, si se relataran una por una, no cabrían en todo el mundo los libros que se escribieran.

Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved,
the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper
and had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?"
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
Jesus said to him, "What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours? 
You follow me."
So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.
But Jesus had not told him that he would not die,
just "What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?"

It is this disciple who testifies to these things
and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.
There are also many other things that Jesus did,
but if these were to be described individually,
I do not think the whole world would contain the books
that would be written.

Meditacion:

Estamos por concluir el tiempo pascual, tiempo especial de gracia por el que escuchamos el testimonio de aquellos que fueron los testigos oculares de la Resurrección. En la primera lectura nos presenta Pablo en Roma, lugar de su martirio. Pero Lucas no nos dice cual a sido el destino de Pablo en los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Eso se explica porque, aunque los Hechos nos cuentan la historia de la Iglesia a través de Pedro y Pablo, en definitiva, lo que cuenta es la historia del anuncio de Jesús que, impulsada por el Espíritu Santo, resuena en todos los rincones del mundo. No hay cadenas, ni muerte que pueda contener la fuerza de la Palabra.

De igual modo encontramos, en la conclusión del Evangelio de Juan, la respuesta de Jesús a la pregunta de Pedro respecto a la suerte del Discípulo amado: «Señor, y éste ¿qué?». Esta pregunta, tal vez hecha por curiosidad o por el deseo de confronto con tal discípulo tiene una respuesta sin equívocos: «Si quiero que se quede hasta que yo venga, ¿a ti qué? Tú sígueme». Cada uno es llamado a seguir Jesús personalmente y con un proyecto de vida propio. Lo decisivo es el seguimiento de cada persona y no el destino que les toca a los demás. Dios tiene la libertad del tiempo y el modo en dirigirse a cada uno de sus hijos.

No somos nosotros los que tenemos de decir a Dios lo que debe hacer. Eso pasa con frecuencia cuando los padres que intentan infundir una educación religiosa en sus hijos perciben que en algún momento estos toman otro rumbo. A la pregunta «¿Dónde nos equivocamos?, ¿Qué le va a pasar a nuestro hijo?», Dios posiblemente tiene otro modo de responder al rechazo que le tienen en algún momento de la vida muchos adolescentes y jóvenes. Costumbro decir a los padres que, si la semilla de la fe ha sido sembrada en sus vidas, en algún momento germinará. Lo más importante es testimoniar, como el Discípulo amado, nuestra experiencia profunda de encuentro con el Señor, de sentirnos como él, verdaderos «discípulos amados». We are about to conclude the Easter season, a special time of grace through which we hear the testimony of those who were the eyewitnesses of the Resurrection. In the first reading Paul presents us in Rome, the place of his martyrdom. But Luke does not tell us what was the fate of Paul in the Acts of the Apostles. That is explained because, although the Acts tell us the history of the Church through Peter and Paul, in short, what counts is the story of the announcement of Jesus that, impelled by the Holy Spirit, resounds in all corners of the world . There are no chains, no death that can contain the force of the Word.

In the same way we find, in the conclusion of the Gospel of John, the answer of Jesus to the question of Peter regarding the fate of the beloved disciple: «Lord, and this one what?». This question, perhaps made out of curiosity or the desire to confront such a disciple, has an unequivocal answer: "If I want him to stay until I come, what do you? Follow me". Each one is called to follow Jesus personally and with a project of his own life. The decisive thing is the follow-up of each person and not the destiny that it is up to others. God has the freedom of time and the way to address each of his children.

We are not the ones who have to tell God what he should do. This happens frequently when parents who try to instill a religious education in their children perceive that at some point they take another course. To the question "Where are we wrong? What is going to happen to our son?", God possibly has another way of responding to the rejection that many teenagers and young people have at some point in their lives. It is customary to tell parents that, if the seed of faith has been sown in their lives, at some point it will germinate. The most important thing is to witness, as the beloved disciple, our profound experience of meeting the Lord, of feeling like him, true "beloved disciples". The presence of the Holy Spirit, a gift promised by Jesus, is the certainty of that love. Amen
