Apacienta mis ovejas

Jn 21, 15-19

En aquel tiempo, le preguntó Jesús a Simón Pedro: "Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que éstos?" Él le contestó: "Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero". Jesús le dijo: "Apacienta mis corderos".

Por segunda vez le preguntó: "Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?" Él le respondió: "Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero". Jesús le dijo: "Pastorea mis ovejas".

Por tercera vez le preguntó: "Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me quieres?" Pedro se entristeció de que Jesús le hubiera preguntado por tercera vez si lo quería, y le contestó: "Señor, tú lo sabes todo; tú bien sabes que te quiero". Jesús le dijo: "Apacienta mis ovejas.

Yo te aseguro: cuando eras joven, tú mismo te ceñías la ropa e ibas a donde querías; pero cuando seas viejo, extenderás los brazos y otro te ceñirá y te llevará a donde no quieras". Esto se lo dijo para indicarle con qué género de muerte habría de glorificar a Dios. Después le dijo: "Sígueme''.

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, 
he said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." 
He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
"Do you love me?" and he said to him,
"Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; 
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go."
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.
And when he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me."

Meditacion:

El encuentro de Pedro con Jesús resucitado es una verdadera reconstrucción de su relación con él, pues Pedro le había fallado a Jesús. Pedro se sentía humillado por no haber sido fiel a su promesa: “daré mi vida por ti” (Jn 13,37). Pero lo que vemos en su encuentro con el Resucitado es un gesto elocuente de lo que Dios hizo con él y puede hacer con nosotros.

El centro de todo es el amor de Jesús, un amor que nasce de su amor hacia nosotros, como el discípulo amado pudo contemplar en su costado abierto por la lanza y herido de amor por nosotros (cf. Jn 19,35). La pregunta, casi insistente de Jesús, por el amor de Pedro, suena como un bálsamo en la herida de su infidelidad. Jesús no le reprime por haberle negado, sino que le da la oportunidad de expresar su amor. Y en cada respuesta dada por Pedro “sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”, es como si fuese sanando, poco a poco, cada una de las tres heridas de negación. Su respuesta le rehabilita. La tríplice respuesta de Pedro suscita una respuesta proporcional a la misericordia recibida.

Si hasta la resurrección de Jesús, Pedro le seguía por otros motivos, a partir de este momento, es el amor que cuenta en su adhesión al Maestro. El Señor, antes de confiarle a Pedro el encargo pastoral de su Iglesia, le exige la confesión de amor. Ese amor le permitirá conducir la misión que Jesús le confía hasta entregarse totalmente. La confesión de amor es imprescindible para ejercer el cuidado pastoral en la Iglesia.

La única condición que Jesús exige a Pedro y todos los encargados en cuidar a los demás es el amor. Lo que Pedro más necesitaba era el perdón y la misericordia, y fue lo que encontró en Jesús resucitado. Por eso, está capacitado para cuidar a los que el Señor le confía. El pastoreo es una cuestión de amor: a Jesús y a los hermanos y hermanas. Amen

Peter's encounter with the risen Jesus is a true reconstruction of his relationship with him, because Peter had failed Jesus. Peter felt humiliated for not being faithful to his promise: "I will give my life for you" (Jn 13,37). But what we see in his encounter with the Risen One is an eloquent gesture of what God did with him and can do with us.

The center of everything is the love of Jesus, a love that grows out of his love for us, as the beloved disciple could contemplate in his side opened by the spear and wounded by love for us (Jn 19,35). The question, almost insistent of Jesus, for the love of Pedro, sounds like a balm in the wound of his infidelity. Jesus does not repress him for denying him, but rather gives him the opportunity to express his love. And in every answer given by Peter "yes, Lord, you know that I love you", it is as if he were healing, little by little, each of the three wounds of denial. His answer rehabilitates him. Peter's threefold response provokes a response proportional to the mercy received.

If until the resurrection of Jesus, Peter followed him for other reasons, from this moment on, it is the love that counts in his adherence to the Master. The Lord, before entrusting to Peter the pastoral charge of his Church, demands the confession of love. That love will allow him to lead the mission that Jesus entrusts to him until he gives himself totally. The confession of love is essential to exercise pastoral care in the Church.

The only condition that Jesus demands from Peter and all those in charge of caring for others is love. What Peter most needed was forgiveness and mercy, and it was what he found in the risen Jesus. Therefore, he is qualified to take care of those whom the Lord entrusts to him. Pastoralism is a matter of love: Jesus and the brothers and sisters. Amen
