Ama a tus enemigos

Mt 5, 43-48

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Han oído ustedes que se dijo: Ama a tu prójimo y odia a tu enemigo; yo, en cambio, les digo: Amen a sus enemigos, hagan el bien a los que los odian y rueguen por los que los persiguen y calumnian, para que sean hijos de su Padre celestial, que hace salir su sol sobre los buenos y los malos, y manda su lluvia sobre los justos y los injustos.

Porque si ustedes aman a los que los aman, ¿qué recompensa merecen? ¿No hacen eso mismo los publicanos? Y si saludan tan sólo a sus hermanos, ¿qué hacen de extraordinario? ¿No hacen eso mismo los paganos? Ustedes, pues, sean perfectos, como su Padre celestial es perfecto”.

You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Meditacion:

A amar se aprende, nadie viene a este mundo sabiendo amar. Un primer contacto es con nuestros padres que nos enseñan a medida que nos educan que es el amor.

Pero fuera de nuestra familia, el amor nunca es tan palpable... cuanto mas con nuestros amigos cercanos y paramos de contar.

Pensar en amar a los que nos hacen o nos han hecho mal nos parece algo inalcanzable y pensamos que el alejarnos de alquien que nos hizo mal es una gran obra de parte de nosotros, que somos misericordiosos.

 En realidad. la mayoría de nosotros somos vitalmente conservadores. Preferimos dejar las cosas como están para ver como quedan. Y no nos cuesta mucho cualquier cambio que nos saque de nuestra "zona de comfort". Vamos que cualquier cosa que nos suene a revolucionaria en principio nos asusta. Porque nos asusta lo desconocido. Y terminamos prefiriendo lo malo conocido que lo bueno por conocer. 

 Por eso lo que nos dice Jesús en el Evangelio nos deja fuera de lugar, sin respuesta. De verdad, que nos cuesta entenderle y mucho más vivirlo. Hay que amar a los enemigos y rezar por los que nos persiguen. Y, en este caso, amar no se refiere a una actitud etérea y flotante sin consecuencias prácticas. Ya sabemos todos que para Jesús eso de amar es algo que tiene mucho que ver con la vida diaria, con la relación, con el cariño, con la atención a las necesidades del otro, con el servicio... Así que cuando dice “amar a los enemigos”, está refiriéndose a que les tenemos que servir, atender y tratar con cariño en sus necesidades. Algo enormemente práctico y concreto. 

Lo malo es que el argumento que utiliza Jesús para convencernos de que hay que amar a los enemigos, no se puede discutir. Ahí está Dios, el padre y origen de todo, que hace salir el sol –la vida– sobre todos sin distinción, sobre malos y buenos. Además, si solo hacemos el bien a los que nos lo hacen, que premio tendremos (esta parte del argumento se dirige sobre todo a los que actúan sólo pensando en el premio que van a recibir). Por otra parte, si actuamos así, ¿en qué nos vamos a diferenciar de los malos?

Y al final, nos da el último argumento, el definitivo. Nosotros, los hijos, estamos llamados a ser como nuestro Padre del cielo: perfectos. Perfectos en el amor. Sin condiciones. Sin límites. Como es el amor. Para siempre y para todo. 

 El argumento de Jesús es irrebatible. Pero aún así, después de tantos siglos, nos cuesta entender, y mucho más, llevar a la práctica el consejo de Jesús: “Amad a vuestros enemigos  rezad por los que os persiguen.” En muchas ocasiones seguimos prefiriendo amar a los nuestros y dejar de lado a los otros, a los que hablan diferente, o tienen una religión diferente, o pertenecen a una raza diferente. Seguimos haciendo distinciones allí donde nuestro Padre Dios no distingue porque para él todos somos hijos e hijas, todos amados por igual. 

Menos mal que en la Iglesia tenemos esa organización que se llama “Caritas”. Está presente en todos los países. Y, que yo sepa, es una institución de la iglesia que se dirige a todos, que atiende a todos los necesitados, los pobres, los marginados, sin hacer distinciones de ningún tipo. Los hombres y mujeres de Caritas nos recuerdan que es posible hacer realidad las palabras de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy.

De todas maneras, como presentar la otra mejilla de ayer, todo es gradual y por pasos, debemos elevarnos a la realidad del Padre con pequeños pasos de niño, sin prisa pero sin pausa. Amen

To love you learn, nobody comes to this world knowing how to love. A first contact is with our parents who teach us as they educate us that love is.

But outside of our family, love is never so palpable ... how much more with our close friends and we stop counting.

Thinking about loving those who do or have done us wrong seems unattainable and we think that getting away from someone who did us wrong is a great work on our part, that we are merciful.

 Actually. Most of us are vitally conservative. We prefer to leave things as they are to see how they are. And it does not cost us much any change that takes us out of our "comfort zone". Let's go that anything that sounds revolutionary to us at first scares us. Because the unknown scares us. And we end up preferring the bad known than the good to know.

 That is why what Jesus tells us in the Gospel leaves us out of place, without an answer. Truly, we find it hard to understand him and much more to live it. We must love the enemies and pray for those who persecute us. And, in this case, loving does not refer to an ethereal and floating attitude without practical consequences. We all know that for Jesus that love is something that has a lot to do with daily life, with relationship, with love, with attention to the needs of the other, with service ... So when he says "love to the enemies, "he is referring to the fact that we have to serve them, attend them and treat them with care in their needs. Something enormously practical and concrete.

The trouble is that the argument used by Jesus to convince us that we must love our enemies can not be discussed. There is God, the father and origin of everything, who brings the sun - life - out on all without distinction, on the bad and the good. Also, if we only do good to those who do it, what prize will we have (this part of the argument is aimed above all at those who act only thinking about the prize they will receive). On the other hand, if we act like this, what will we differentiate from the bad ones?

And in the end, it gives us the last argument, the definitive one. We, the children, are called to be like our Father in heaven: perfect. Perfect in love. Without conditions. Unlimited. How is love? Forever and for everything.

 Jesus' argument is irrefutable. But even so, after so many centuries, it is hard for us to understand, and much more, to put into practice the advice of Jesus: "Love your enemies pray for those who persecute you." On many occasions we still prefer to love our people and leave side to others, to those who speak differently, or have a different religion, or belong to a different race. We continue making distinctions where our Father God does not distinguish because for him we are all sons and daughters, all loved equally.

Fortunately, in the Church we have that organization called "Caritas". It is present in all countries. And, as far as I know, it is an institution of the church that addresses everyone, that attends to all the needy, the poor, the marginalized, without making distinctions of any kind. The men and women of Caritas remind us that it is possible to fulfill the words of Jesus in the Gospel of today.

Anyway, how to present the other cheek of yesterday, everything is gradual and step by step, we must rise to the reality of the Father with small steps as a child, without haste but without pause. Amen
