Jn 20, 24-29

GospelJN 20:24-29
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve,
was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord."
But Thomas said to them,
"Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands
and put my finger into the nailmarks
and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."
Now a week later his disciples were again inside
and Thomas was with them.
Jesus came, although the doors were locked,
and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you."
Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands,
and bring your hand and put it into my side,
and do not be unbelieving, but believe."
Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."

Meditacion:
Amen

No doubt that Santo Tomas would have preferred to go down in history for something other than for not having believed in the risen Jesus.
Saint Thomas will evangelize all the rest of his life, reaching India where he will be martyred, forming the branch of the Church that is called "Malabar rite"; To this day, the Malabar brothers are known as "the disciples of Santo Tomas."
When Thomas saw the risen Jesus, he believed in him and dedicated his whole life to follow him and serve him. But in the absence of Christ, there was doubt. This doubt could only disappear with a personal encounter with the Lord: "If I do not see in his hands the wounds of the nails, and if I do not put ... my hand in his side, I will not believe". Jesus answered him: "Do not be unbelieving; Believe! "With humble faith, Thomas replied:" My Lord and my God! "(John 20, 25. 27. 28).
For us, the important thing is to observe his change of attitude: Thomas was slow to understand that his position on the word of the companions had not been reasonable, because he had before him very reliable testimonies, for example, the Magdalene and the disciples of Emmaus .
On our part, if we want to know Jesus and proclaim his lordship, we must also have a personal encounter with the Lord. Jesus wants this unique encounter to be produced by the power of the Holy Spirit. We, like Tomás, also have a decision to make,
If everything had been clear, Jesus would have imposed himself. But that is not God's style. He proposes, and the person can welcome. It is true that life goes away, but love can not be imposed, because it would no longer be love. Would there be something more incoherent than saying "I command you to love me"? That is why God has told us: "Here I am, for those who want to open their door". Love, when it comes to "impose", is not by force, but by itself. And then he no longer knows to coercive imposition, but the heart has been won and enlarged.
Faith is always a leap. Part of a "see" to get to "believe". But not everyone who "sees" believes. Perhaps Thomas, like many others, expected to have seen a successful Messiah ... and he found the cross. And that's exactly what it had to do ... to believe, in a different way. In the end, the Risen One is presented with the signs of passion ... and before them, before Him, Thomas says that beautiful "My Lord and my God" ...
May we also "see" ... the wonder of life, the hearts of people, the words of Scripture, the signs of the Eucharist, the cry of the needy ... and seeing all that, "believe" . "My Lord and my God". Amen
