En aquel tiempo, Herodes había mandado apresar a Juan el Bautista y lo había metido y encadenado en la cárcel. Herodes se había casado con Herodías, esposa de su hermano Filipo, y Juan le decía: "No te está permitido tener por mujer a la esposa de tu hermano". Por eso Herodes lo mandó encarcelar.
Herodías sentía por ello gran rencor contra Juan y quería quitarle la vida, pero no sabía cómo, porque Herodes miraba con respeto a Juan, pues sabía que era un hombre recto y santo, y lo tenía custodiado. Cuando lo oía hablar, quedaba desconcertado, pero le gustaba escucharlo.
La ocasión llegó cuando Herodes dio un banquete a su corte, a sus oficiales y a la gente principal de Galilea, con motivo de su cumpleaños. La hija de Herodías bailó durante la fiesta y su baile les gustó mucho a Herodes y a sus invitados. El rey le dijo entonces a la joven: "Pídeme lo que quieras y yo te lo daré". Y le juró varias veces: "Te daré lo que me pidas, aunque sea la mitad de mi reino".
Ella fue a preguntarle a su madre: "¿Qué le pido?" Su madre le contestó: "La cabeza de Juan el Bautista". Volvió ella inmediatamente junto al rey y le dijo: "Quiero que me des ahora mismo, en una charola, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista".
El rey se puso muy triste, pero debido a su juramento y a los convidados, no quiso desairar a la joven, y enseguida mandó a un verdugo que trajera la cabeza de Juan. El verdugo fue, lo decapitó en la cárcel, trajo la cabeza en una charola, se la entregó a la joven y ella se la entregó a su madre.
Al enterarse de esto, los discípulos de Juan fueron a recoger el cadáver y lo sepultaron.

the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.
John had said to Herod,
"It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Herodias harbored a grudge against him
and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man,
and kept him in custody.
When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed,
yet he liked to listen to him.
She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday,
gave a banquet for his courtiers,
his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee.
Herodias' own daughter came in
and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests.
The king said to the girl,
"Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you."
He even swore many things to her,
"I will grant you whatever you ask of me,
even to half of my kingdom."
She went out and said to her mother,
"What shall I ask for?"
She replied, "The head of John the Baptist."
The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request,
"I want you to give me at once
on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
The king was deeply distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests
he did not wish to break his word to her.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders
to bring back his head.
He went off and beheaded him in the prison.
He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl.
The girl in turn gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about it,
they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Hoy leemos de "Evangelio para cada mañana"
El tiempo ordinario tiene estas cosas. La liturgia no nos da reposo, no deja que nos relajemos, y entre santo y santa, un martirio. La muerte de aquél que señaló al mundo la venida del Salvador.Como cada día, hoy se nos da otra pista sobre lo que tenemos que hacer para alcanzar el Reino de los Cielos. Estar atento a lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor. Eso permitió a Juan ver a Jesús y distinguirlo entre la gente, y eso le llevó también a denunciar la situación de pecado en la que vivía Herodes.
Seguramente, Juan sabía a lo que se enfrentaba. No hace falta ser muy listo para saber que, si te enfrentas al poderoso, te puede costar caro. Muy caro. A veces, en nuestro tiempo también, la vida. Todo se puede dar, incluso la vida, si se ha tenido un encuentro con Cristo. Lo demuestran muchos testimonios a lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia.
Para eso, por supuesto, hace falta entrenamiento. Eso exige, por ejemplo, la atención a los pequeños detalles, que es lo que nos permite poder ser fiel en las cosas grandes. Es una de las enseñanzas de, por ejemplo, los Beatos Mártires de Barbastro. Tuve la suerte de conocer al padre Zubiri, C.M.F., hace algunos años. Este padre fue compañero de estudios de los Beatos. Y nos contó cómo su disciplina, su fidelidad a la oración, su frecuencia en la confesión, sus horarios espartanos, les fueron preparando para el martirio. Incluso rezando para poder dar su sangre por Cristo, por la Virgen, por la Iglesia y por la Congregación claretiana.
¿Cómo está tu fidelidad en las pequeñas cosas? El plan que hiciste a principios de año, o al final de los ejercicios, o en aquel día de retiro, ¿lo revisas de vez en cuando o está cubierto de polvo en la estantería? ¿Hay cada día sitio en tu vida, aunque sea unos minutillos, para Él? Sin eso, sin las pequeñas cosas, no se pueden conseguir las grandes. Tú mismo. Amen

For that, of course, you need training. That requires, for example, attention to small details, which is what allows us to be faithful in big things. It is one of the teachings of, for example, the Blessed Martyrs of Barbastro. I had the good fortune to meet Father Zubiri, C.M.F., some years ago. This father was a fellow student of the Blessed. And he told us how his discipline, his fidelity to prayer, his frequency in confession, his Spartan schedules, were preparing them for martyrdom. Even praying to give his blood for Christ, for the Virgin, for the Church and for the Claretian Congregation.
How is your fidelity in the little things? The plan you made at the beginning of the year, or at the end of the exercises, or on that day of retirement, do you check it from time to time or is it covered in dust on the shelf? Is there a place in your life every day, even if it's a few minutes, for Him? Without that, without the little things, you can not get the big ones. Yourself.
