Virgen de Guadalupe

Lc 1, 26-38

En aquel tiempo, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret, a una virgen desposada con un varón de la estirpe de David, llamado José. La virgen se llamaba María.

Entró el ángel a donde ella estaba y le dijo: "Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo". Al oír estas palabras, ella se preocupó mucho y se preguntaba qué querría decir semejante saludo.

El ángel le dijo: "No temas, María, porque has hallado gracia ante Dios. Vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. Él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre, y él reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reinado no tendrá fin".

María le dijo entonces al ángel: "¿Cómo podrá ser esto, puesto que yo permanezco virgen?" El ángel le contestó: "El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso, el Santo, que va a nacer de ti, será llamado Hijo de Dios. Ahí tienes a tu parienta Isabel, que a pesar de su vejez, ha concebido un hijo y ya va en el sexto mes la que llamaban estéril, porque no hay nada imposible para Dios". María contestó: "Yo soy la esclava del Señor; cúmplase en mí lo que me has dicho". Y el ángel se retiró de su presencia.

The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin's name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you."
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
"Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end."
But Mary said to the angel,
"How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?"
And the angel said to her in reply,
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God."
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word."
Then the angel departed from her.

Meditacion:

Hoy es el dia que se celebra a la Virgen de Guadalupe. Para los que nos siguen y leen fuera de Mexico o Estados Unidos, hoy es una fiesta grande por aqui; hay dos evangelios posibles pero yo escogi repetir el de la anunciacion que ya escuchamos el pasado domingo.

La Virgen de Guadalupe se aparecio durante dos dias al indigena San Juan Diego cuando El estaba en camino a la ciudad para escuchar misa.

Toda las apariciones estan llenas de simbolismos y señales que apuntan a que la Virgen protege sin medida a los pueblos de Latinoamerica, en especial, a los indigenas.

Hoy leemos de "La palabra entre nosotros"

Yo soy la esclava del Señor; cúmplase en mí lo que me has dicho. (Lucas 1, 38).

Probablemente la Virgen María y Juan Diego jamás pensaron que Dios les daría una misión tan trascendental en el plan de salvación. Ninguno de ellos tenía una educación especial ni prestigio en la sociedad, pero ¡qué grande fue lo que hicieron! ¡Cambiaron la historia!

La joven María venía de una familia sencilla del remoto pueblo de Nazaret. Cuando se le apareció el ángel Gabriel, ella probablemente estaba haciendo sus quehaceres diarios y ayudando a su familia con las tareas domésticas. En su sencillez, debe haberse sorprendido sobremanera al enterarse de que Dios la había escogido a ella para ser la madre del Hijo de Dios, y a pesar de su gran turbación y sorpresa, ella aceptó.

Quince siglos más tarde, la propia María se le apareció al humilde Juan Diego y le encargó que visitase al obispo de la ciudad para pedirle que construyera una iglesia en su honor. Juan Diego obedeció inmediatamente, pero el obispo le dijo que regresara otro día. Cuando María se le apareció de nuevo, Juan Diego le dijo que había fracasado en su misión y que sería mejor que buscara un mensajero más influyente. Pero María le respondió: “Oye, hijo mío el más pequeño, ten por cierto que tengo muchos servidores y mensajeros, pero es muy necesario que por tu mano se cumpla mi voluntad.”

Así Juan Diego volvió al obispo, quien pidió entonces una señal de que la aparición era real. María le dijo a Juan Diego que cortara rosas en la ladera de un cerro, aunque era invierno. Él recogió las flores en su tilma y las llevó al obispo. Cuando abrió la tilma, el obispo vio una imagen de la Virgen María impresa en la tilma. Convencido, el obispo mandó construir la iglesia. Los milagros derivados de este encuentro llevaron a casi nueve millones de aztecas a convertirse al Señor.

Dios podría cambiar fácilmente el corazón y la mente de las personas hablando con voz de trueno desde el cielo. Pero no lo hace. Prefiere escoger a los humildes para que su mensaje sea escuchado y así cambie el mundo.

Así que no te sorprendas, hermano, si Dios te llama para una labor especial. Si no te sientes capaz, Dios piensa lo contrario. Sigue al Señor siempre y así cumplirás cualquier misión.

“Señor y Salvador mío, ayúdame a decirte que sí, como lo hicieron la Virgen María y San Juan Diego.” Amen

Today is the day that is celebrated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. For those who follow us and read outside of Mexico or the United States, today is a big party around here; There are two possible gospels but I chose to repeat the one of the announcement that we already heard last Sunday.

The Virgin of Guadalupe appeared for two days to the indigenous San Juan Diego when He was on his way to the city to hear mass.

All the apparitions are full of symbolism and signs that point to the Virgin protecting without measure the peoples of Latin America, especially the indigenous people.

Today we read of "The word among us"

I am the slave of the Lord; fulfill what you have told me in me. (Luke 1:38)

Probably the Virgin Mary and Juan Diego never thought that God would give them such a transcendental mission in the plan of salvation. None of them had a special education or prestige in society, but how big they did! They changed the story!

The young Maria came from a simple family from the remote town of Nazareth. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her, she was probably doing her daily chores and helping her family with housework. In her simplicity, she must have been very surprised to learn that God had chosen her to be the mother of the Son of God, and in spite of her great embarrassment and surprise, she accepted.

Fifteen centuries later, Maria herself appeared to the humble Juan Diego and asked him to visit the bishop of the city to ask her to build a church in his honor. Juan Diego obeyed immediately, but the bishop told him to come back another day. When Maria appeared to him again, Juan Diego told him that he had failed in his mission and that it would be better to look for a more influential messenger. But Mary answered him: "Hey, my youngest son, be certain that I have many servants and messengers, but it is very necessary that your will be carried out by your hand."

So Juan Diego returned to the bishop, who then asked for a sign that the apparition was real. Maria told Juan Diego to cut roses on the side of a hill, although it was winter. He picked the flowers in his tilma and took them to the bishop. When the tilma was opened, the bishop saw an image of the Virgin Mary printed on the tilma. Convinced, the bishop had the church built. The miracles derived from this encounter led almost nine million Aztecs to convert to the Lord.

God could easily change the hearts and minds of people speaking with a voice of thunder from heaven. But he does not. He prefers to choose the humble ones so that his message is heard and thus the world changes.

So do not be surprised, brother, if God calls you for a special task. If you do not feel capable, God thinks otherwise. Follow the Lord always and you will fulfill any mission.

"Lord and my Savior, help me to say yes, as did the Virgin Mary and St. Juan Diego." Amen
