Ama a tus enemigos

Mt 5, 43-48

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Han oído que se dijo: Ama a tu prójimo y odia a tu enemigo. Yo, en cambio, les digo: Amen a sus enemigos, hagan el bien a los que los odian y rueguen por los que los persiguen y calumnian, para que sean hijos de su Padre celestial, que hace salir su sol sobre los buenos y los malos, y manda su lluvia sobre los justos y los injustos.

Porque, si ustedes aman a los que los aman, ¿qué recompensa merecen? ¿No hacen eso mismo los publicanos? Y si saludan tan sólo a sus hermanos, ¿qué hacen de extraordinario? ¿No hacen eso mismo los paganos? Sean, pues, perfectos como su Padre celestial es perfecto".

"You have heard that it was said,
You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies,
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers and sisters only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Meditacion:

El Evangelio de hoy es el final del Sermón de la Montaña. Es la última parte de lo que los estudiosos llaman la “antítesis”, cuando Jesús dice: “Ustedes han oído que… pero yo les digo…” En cada antítesis, Jesús está explicando cómo es la vida en el Espíritu, y ésta es completamente inusual.

Pero si queremos hablar de algo que no es usual, miremos cómo nos ama Dios. Por naturaleza, nosotros amamos a quienes nos demuestran amor. La ley de Moises alentaba a los israelitas a ir un poco más allá y amar a sus hermanos “como a sí mismos”. Pero Dios va todavía más allá: amar también a quienes no nos aman, incluso a nuestros enemigos. ¿No es esto de lo que trata la cruz de Cristo?

Jesús nos pide que tratemos de amar incondicionalmente. La gente nos verá y dirá: “¿Cómo puedes amar así?” Y eso es bueno, deberíamos dejar a muchos rascándose la cabeza.

El lunes nos decía la Palabra de Dios. “Sed santos porque yo el Señor, vuestro Dios, soy santo” (Lev19, 1), y hoy Jesús nos dice: “Sed perfectos como vuestro Padre celestial es perfecto” (Mt 5, 48).  En las lecturas del lunes la santidad era las obras de misericordia hacia el prójimo. Hoy Jesús nos propone algo más: el amor a los enemigos, a aquellos que nos quieren mal.

Jesús nos pide una caridad sin restricciones y una oración que abarque a todos, incluso a los que nos hacen sufrir. Y esto porque el Padre Dios nos quiere hijos semejantes a él en el obrar el bien, es decir así como su amor para con cada uno de nosotros es totalmente gratuito aunque nosotros seamos ingratos y pecadores, así debemos ser nosotros con los demás aunque nos ofendan.  La gratuidad del amor es la regla suprema de las relaciones humanas.

Mañana, después de la Misa, intenta hacer algo distinto. Habla con alguien que no conoces. Es posible que al principio te sientas incómodo, pero no importa. Cuando des el primer paso, Dios te sorprenderá. Es posible que veas su presencia en alguien inesperado. ¡Así empezarás a amar como Dios nos ama!

“Señor Jesús, quiero tratar de imitarte en todo. Ayúdame a hacerlo, para que yo también sea ‘distinto’.” Amen

Today's Gospel is the end of the Sermon on the Mount. It is the last part of what scholars call the "antithesis", when Jesus says: "You have heard that ... but I tell you ..." In every antithesis, Jesus is explaining what life in the Spirit is like, and this is completely unusual

But if we want to talk about something that is not usual, let's look at how God loves us. By nature, we love those who show us love. The law of Moses encouraged the Israelites to go a little further and to love their brothers "as themselves". But God goes even further: to love also those who do not love us, even our enemies. Is not this what the cross of Christ is about?

Jesus asks us to try to love unconditionally. People will see us and say, "How can you love like that?" And that's good, we should leave many scratching their heads.

On Monday he told us the Word of God. "Be holy because I, the Lord, your God, am holy" (Lev19, 1), and today Jesus tells us: "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5:48). In the readings on Monday, holiness was the works of mercy towards others. Today Jesus proposes something else: love to enemies, to those who love us badly.

Jesus asks us for unrestricted charity and a prayer that embraces everyone, including those who make us suffer. And this because the Father God wants us children similar to him in doing good, that is, as his love for each one of us is totally free even though we are ungrateful and sinners, so we must be with others even if they offend us . The gratuitousness of love is the supreme rule of human relationships.

Tomorrow, after Mass, try to do something different. Talk to someone you do not know. You may feel uncomfortable at first, but it does not matter. When you take the first step, God will surprise you. You may see their presence in someone unexpected. Thus you will begin to love as God loves us!

"Lord Jesus, I want to try to imitate you in everything. Help me to do it, so that I too will be 'different'. "Amen
