El camino del servicio

Mt 20, 17-28

En aquel tiempo, mientras iba de camino a Jerusalén, Jesús llamó aparte a los Doce y les dijo: "Ya vamos camino de Jerusalén y el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas, que lo condenarán a muerte y lo entregarán a los paganos para que se burlen de él, lo azoten y lo crucifiquen; pero al tercer día, resucitará".

Entonces se acercó a Jesús la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo, junto con ellos, y se postró para hacerle una petición. Él le preguntó: "¿Qué deseas?" Ella respondió: "Concédeme que estos dos hijos míos se sienten, uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda, en tu Reino". Pero Jesús replicó: "No saben ustedes lo que piden. ¿Podrán beber el cáliz que yo he de beber?" Ellos contestaron: "Sí podemos". Y él les dijo: "Beberán mi cáliz; pero eso de sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda no me toca a mí concederlo; es para quien mi Padre lo tiene reservado".

Al oír aquello, los otros diez discípulos se indignaron contra los dos hermanos. Pero Jesús los llamó y les dijo: "Ya saben que los jefes de los pueblos los tiranizan y que los grandes los oprimen. Que no sea así entre ustedes. El que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea el que los sirva, y el que quiera ser primero, que sea su esclavo; así como el Hijo del hombre no ha venido a ser servido, sino a servir y a dar la vida por la redención de todos".

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests
and the scribes,
and they will condemn him to death,
and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day."

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her, "What do you wish?"
She answered him,
"Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom."
Jesus said in reply,
"You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can."
He replied,
"My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left,
this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Meditacion:

No es posible leer el evangelio de hoy sin esbozar una sonrisa. Y nos podemos identificar con los apostoles de una manera mucho mas sencilla en este pasaje que en otros, llenos de sabiduria.

Hoy los apostoles, en su sencillez judia que proclamaba que el exito era el reconocimiento de los otros y el camino a la santidad, piden (por medio de su mama!) ser sentados a la derecha y a la izquierda de Jesus.

Leyendo el Evangelio nos damos cuenta de que en realidad los discípulos de Jesús cometieron muchísimos errores, algunos grandes, otros no tanto. Pedro intentó impedirle ir a la cruz; Tomás dudó de que el Señor hubiera resucitado, y hoy vemos que Santiago y Juan le pidieron posiciones de privilegio en su Reino. 

Jesús, maestro bueno, no desespera ante la cerrazón de sus seguidores, sino que aprovecha la ocasión para enseñarnos y, con su profunda pedagogía, introducirnos en la comprensión de la difícil lógica de la cruz. Es el camino del servicio. Aunque estemos tan inclinados al éxito, a ese éxito que supone la derrota de los rivales y los enemigos, podemos aprender y asumir el camino alternativo que Jesús ha escogido, el camino estrecho y empinado que lleva a la vida, por la vía del servicio. La bondad del servicio la entiende cualquiera, entre otras cosas, porque no supone la negación de la otra parte: en la lógica del poder queremos vencer, pero no que nos venzan (pues si uno vence, alguien tiene que salir derrotado); en la lógica del servicio, nos gusta que nos sirvan, sí, pero también podemos servir, haciendo a los demás lo que queremos para nosotros (cf. Mt 7, 12). Por esa vía tan sencilla y humana podemos ir aprendiendo el camino de la cruz al que nos invita Jesús, que no ha venido a ser servido, sino a servir y a dar su vida como rescate por muchos.

“Señor, tú me conoces mejor que yo mismo. Ayúdame a confiar en tu plan para que yo crezca y madure en la fe para tu servicio.” Amen

It is not possible to read the Gospel today without smiling. And we can identify with the apostles in a much simpler way in this passage than in others, full of wisdom.

Today the apostles, in their Jewish simplicity that proclaimed that success was the recognition of others and the path to holiness, ask (through their mother!) To be seated on the right and on the left of Jesus.

Reading the Gospel we realize that in reality the disciples of Jesus made many mistakes, some great, others not so much. Peter tried to prevent him from going to the cross; Thomas doubted that the Lord had risen, and today we see that James and John asked him for positions of privilege in his Kingdom.

Jesus, good teacher, does not despair at the closure of his followers, but takes the opportunity to teach us and, with his profound pedagogy, introduce us to the understanding of the difficult logic of the cross. It is the path of service. Although we are so inclined to success, to that success that is the defeat of rivals and enemies, we can learn and take the alternative path that Jesus has chosen, the narrow and steep path that leads to life, by way of service. The goodness of service is understood by anyone, among other things, because it does not imply the negation of the other party: in the logic of power we want to win, but not that they defeat us (because if one wins, someone has to be defeated); In the logic of service, we like to be served, yes, but we can also serve others by doing what we want for ourselves (cf. Mt 7, 12). In this simple and human way we can learn the way of the cross to which Jesus invites us, who has not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

"Sir, you know me better than me. Help me to trust in your plan so that I may grow and mature in faith for your service. "Amen
