San Jose

Mt 1, 16. 18-21. 24

Jacob engendró a José, el esposo de María, de la cual nació Jesús, llamado Cristo.

Cristo vino al mundo de la siguiente manera: Estando María, su madre, desposada con José y antes de que vivieran juntos, sucedió que ella, por obra del Espíritu Santo, estaba esperando un hijo. José, su esposo, que era hombre justo, no queriendo ponerla en evidencia, pensó dejarla en secreto.

Mientras pensaba en estas cosas, un ángel del Señor le dijo en sueños: "José, hijo de David, no dudes en recibir en tu casa a María, tu esposa, porque ella ha concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo. Dará a luz un hijo y tú le pondrás el nombre de Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados".

Cuando José despertó de aquel sueño, hizo lo que le había mandado el ángel del Señor.

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

Meditacion:

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de San Jose, padre de Jesus. En San José vemos con claridad una verdad de extraordinaria importancia para nuestra fe y para la vida de cada uno. Los grandes acontecimientos de la historia, esos que conmueven sus cimientos y hacen que varíe su rumbo, suceden gracias a personas humildes y anónimas que han hecho posible la aparición de los grandes y decisivos personajes. Es verdad que esto es así para bien y para mal. Los protagonistas que aparecen en los libros y las crónicas para bien y para mal no hubieran podido hacer nada sin la cooperación de muchos seres humanos anónimos, que crearon de un modo y otro las condiciones para la aparición de aquellos. No cabe duda de que no hay un acontecimiento más decisivo en la historia de la humanidad que la encarnación, la muerte y la resurrección de Cristo. Aquí es Dios quien ha intervenido. Pero lo ha hecho humanamente, humanizándose, haciéndose uno de nosotros. Y, por eso mismo, es normal que haya querido (y tenido que) contar con la cooperación en la sombra de personas que han hecho posible su venida a nuestra historia. José es el prototipo del varón justo: el que sabe discernir la presencia de Dios, el que está dispuesto a retirarse con respeto, pero también a escuchar la voz de Dios que habla en sueños, y a actuar con diligencia, tomando decisiones, asumiendo riesgos, colaborando calladamente y en espíritu de obediencia con los planes de Dios. Si en algo nos parecemos a José es en que somos también personajes anónimos, que viven y trabajan en la sombra de la historia mundial, cuyos focos iluminan a otros. Pero José nos enseña la importancia de ser justos, es decir, de estar abiertos y a la escucha, de trabajar con fidelidad y diligencia, de saber soñar, pero también tomar decisiones y asumir riesgos, para que en la historia sucedan acontecimientos positivos y salvíficos, en vez de las muchas catástrofes que la afligen (con las que también podemos colaborar si no vivimos como debemos); para que Dios pueda seguir viniendo a visitarnos con su voluntad salvífica, para que, en definitiva, Cristo siga reinando en nuestro mundo y las promesas de Dios, que superan toda expectativa, se puedan seguir cumpliendo. Todos los cristianos estamos llamados, al igual que San José, a ser receptores generosos de la gracia divina, que es el poder que nos hace aptos para obedecer al Señor. Estemos, pues, dispuestos a conocer la voluntad de Dios, la cual podemos percibirla haciendo oración, leyendo la Escritura y participando en la liturgia. A veces nos encontraremos en situaciones difíciles y tal vez nos sintamos tentados a dudar de Dios; pero hemos de recordar que todos tenemos el Espíritu Santo, que se deleita en enseñarnos a reconocer la acción del Señor. Cuando hacemos la voluntad divina, empiezan a crecer en nosotros la fe, la esperanza y la intimidad con Dios, y así llegamos a ser capaces de realizar las obras que él tiene preparadas para sus hijos. “Señor y Dios mío, te ruego que me concedas tu fortaleza para ser un servidor obediente de tu Majestad.” Amen

Today we celebrate the feast of San Jose, father of Jesus.

In San José we see clearly a truth of extraordinary importance for our faith and for the life of each one. The great events of history, those that move its foundations and change its course, happen thanks to humble and anonymous people who have made possible the appearance of the great and decisive characters. It is true that this is true for good and bad. The protagonists that appear in books and chronicles for good and for evil could not have done anything without the cooperation of many anonymous human beings, who created in one way and another the conditions for the appearance of those. There is no doubt that there is no more decisive event in the history of humanity than the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ. Here is God who has intervened. But he has done it humanly, humanizing himself, becoming one of us. And, for that reason, it is normal that he wanted (and had to) count on cooperation in the shadow of people who have made possible his coming to our history.

Joseph is the prototype of the righteous man: he who knows how to discern the presence of God, who is willing to retire with respect, but also to listen to the voice of God who speaks in dreams, and to act with diligence, making decisions, taking risks, collaborating quietly and in a spirit of obedience with God's plans.

If we resemble Joseph in anything, it is that we are also anonymous characters, who live and work in the shadow of world history, whose lights illuminate others. But José teaches us the importance of being fair, that is, of being open and listening, of working with fidelity and diligence, of knowing how to dream, but also of making decisions and taking risks, so that positive and salvific events can happen in history, instead of the many catastrophes that afflict her (with which we can also collaborate if we do not live as we should); so that God can continue coming to visit us with his saving will, so that, in the end, Christ continues to reign in our world and the promises of God, which surpass all expectations, can continue to be fulfilled.

All Christians are called, like St. Joseph, to be generous recipients of divine grace, which is the power that makes us fit to obey the Lord. Let us, then, be willing to know the will of God, which we can perceive by praying, reading the Scripture and participating in the liturgy. Sometimes we will find ourselves in difficult situations and maybe we will be tempted to doubt God; but we must remember that we all have the Holy Spirit, who delights in teaching us to recognize the Lord's action. When we do the divine will, faith, hope and intimacy with God begin to grow in us, and thus we become capable of performing the works that he has prepared for his children.

"Lord and my God, I beg you to grant me your strength to be an obedient servant of your Majesty." Amen
