Fieles a mi palabra

Jn 8, 31-42

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los que habían creído en él: “Si se mantienen fieles a mi palabra, serán verdaderamente discípulos míos, conocerán la verdad y la verdad los hará libres”. Ellos replicaron: “Somos hijos de Abraham y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo dices tú: ‘Serán libres’?”

Jesús les contestó: “Yo les aseguro que todo el que peca es un esclavo del pecado y el esclavo no se queda en la casa para siempre; el hijo sí se queda para siempre. Si el Hijo les da la libertad, serán realmente libres. Ya sé que son hijos de Abraham; sin embargo, tratan de matarme, porque no aceptan mis palabras. Yo hablo de lo que he visto en casa de mi Padre: ustedes hacen lo que han oído en casa de su padre”.

Ellos le respondieron: “Nuestro padre es Abraham”. Jesús les dijo: “Si fueran hijos de Abraham, harían las obras de Abraham. Pero tratan de matarme a mí, porque les he dicho la verdad que oí de Dios. Eso no lo hizo Abraham. Ustedes hacen las obras de su padre”. Le respondieron: “Nosotros no somos hijos de prostitución. No tenemos más padre que a Dios”.

Jesús les dijo entonces: “Si Dios fuera su Padre me amarían a mí, porque yo salí de Dios y vengo de Dios; no he venido por mi cuenta, sino enviado por él”.

Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him,
"If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham
and have never been enslaved to anyone. 
How can you say, 'You will become free'?"
Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
A slave does not remain in a household forever,
but a son always remains. 
So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free.
I know that you are descendants of Abraham.
But you are trying to kill me,
because my word has no room among you. 
I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence;
then do what you have heard from the Father."

They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham." 
Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children,
you would be doing the works of Abraham. 
But now you are trying to kill me,
a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God;
Abraham did not do this.
You are doing the works of your father!"
So they said to him, "We were not born of fornication. 
We have one Father, God." 
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me,
for I came from God and am here;
I did not come on my own, but he sent me."

El evangelio de hoy nos urge a alejarnos del pecado.

Cuando vivimos como tenemos que vivir, o sea, como Dios quiere, se experimenta la libertad cristiana. ¿Eso hace la vida más fácil? No lo creo. Al contrario, a veces se nos complica. Aparecen exigencias hasta entonces insospechadas, basadas en el amor, que crean nuevos vínculos, pero no esclavizan, sino más bien dilatan el corazón para andar por el camino de los divinos mandamientos.

Nos llamamos cristianos, como los judíos se vanagloriaban de ser hijos de Abrahán, por ser fieles a ciertas practicas religiosas. Pero esto no basta para hacer de nosotros hijos de Dios, hijos de la Iglesia. Ser hijos significa ante todo ser libres. Todos queremos ser libres. Y sólo Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, el libertador, nos revela lo que es la verdadera libertad: una total renuncia a sí mismos para afirmar al Otro, a los otros.

Jesús enseñó que el pecado esclaviza. Cuando tratamos de seguir nuestro propio camino y nos “desentendemos” de Dios, terminamos encadenados por el pecado, y el pecado nos ciega y nos impide ver las otras opciones saludables y vivificantes que tenemos, de manera que nos privamos de la libertad de escoger. En efecto, caer en el círculo vicioso de la desobediencia es más fácil de lo que suele pensarse, y uno termina por seguir sus propias inclinaciones egoístas y no hacer caso del daño que se está causando a sí mismo y a los demás.

Afortunadamente, la libertad que Jesús ganó en la cruz para todos nos devuelve la capacidad de amar y decidirnos por Dios por encima de todo lo demás. Ahora depende de nosotros que aprendamos a aceptar esa libertad para experimentar la transformación. Esta es la razón por la cual el Sacramento de la Confesión es un magnífico regalo. Cuando confesamos nuestros pecados, Jesús no se limita a perdonarnos, sino que en cada confesión derrama su gracia a torrentes y nos comunica fuerzas para librarnos más y más del pecado y de sus nefastos efectos.

Para nadie es novedad que la tentación puede ser muy fuerte, pero por graves y arraigados que sean los pecados, Jesús es infinitamente más poderoso que cualquier mal y su misericordia se renueva cada día. Ya estamos bien adentrados en la Cuaresma. ¿Por qué no vas a confesarte para despojarte de todo el lastre de culpas, errores y pecados que llevas a cuestas día a día, para que Cristo te libre y su gracia se haga presente en tu vida libremente? Tal vez no lo percibas de inmediato, pero el perdón de Jesús puede sacarte de la esclavitud y así estarás más libre para ser fiel a Dios en toda situación.

“Señor Jesús, líbrame de la atadura de la maldad para que yo aprenda a amarte por sobre todas las cosas y tratar a mis familiares y amigos con generosidad y amabilidad.” Amen

The gospel of today urges us to turn away from sin.

When we live as we have to live, that is, as God wants, we experience Christian freedom. Does that make life easier? I do not think so. On the contrary, sometimes it gets complicated. So far unsuspected demands arise, based on love, which create new bonds, but do not enslave, but rather dilate the heart to walk the path of the divine commandments.

We call ourselves Christians, as the Jews boasted of being Abraham's children, for being faithful to certain religious practices. But this is not enough to make us children of God, children of the Church. Being children means being free first of all. We all want to be free. And only Jesus, the Son of God, the deliverer, reveals to us what true freedom is: a total renunciation of oneself to affirm the Other, the others.

Jesus taught that sin enslaves. When we try to follow our own path and we "disengage" from God, we end up chained by sin, and sin blinds us and prevents us from seeing the other healthy and life-giving options we have, so that we are deprived of the freedom to choose. Indeed, falling into the vicious circle of disobedience is easier than you think, and you end up following your own selfish inclinations and ignoring the damage you are causing to yourself and others.

Fortunately, the freedom Jesus won on the cross for all of us returns the ability to love and decide for God above all else. Now it is up to us to learn to accept that freedom to experience the transformation. This is the reason why the Sacrament of Confession is a magnificent gift. When we confess our sins, Jesus does not limit himself to forgive us, but in each confession he pours out his grace in torrents and communicates strength to free us more and more from sin and its harmful effects.

No one is new that the temptation can be very strong, but however serious and deep-rooted the sins are, Jesus is infinitely more powerful than any evil and his mercy is renewed every day. We are already well into Lent. Why do not you go to confession to get rid of all the burden of guilt, errors and sins that you carry day after day, so that Christ will free you and his grace becomes present in your life freely? You may not see it immediately, but Jesus' forgiveness can get you out of bondage and you will be freer to be faithful to God in every situation.

"Lord Jesus, free me from the bondage of evil so that I may learn to love you above all things and treat my family and friends with generosity and kindness." Amen
