Jn 6, 22-29

GospelJN 6:22-29
[After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.]
The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea
saw that there had been only one boat there,
and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat,
but only his disciples had left.
Other boats came from Tiberias
near the place where they had eaten the bread
when the Lord gave thanks.
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there,
they themselves got into boats
and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
And when they found him across the sea they said to him,
"Rabbi, when did you get here?"
Jesus answered them and said,
"Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me
not because you saw signs
but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
Do not work for food that perishes
but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you.
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal."
So they said to him,
"What can we do to accomplish the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said to them,
"This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent."

Meditacion:
Amen

Today we begin the third week of Easter and begin to read in the Gospel what is called "Discourse on the Bread of Life".
We see how when they found Jesus, they asked him how he had reached the other shore, since there was no missing boat. But Jesus decided not to answer directly, but told them something more about his own identity. Up to this point, people had been attracted to their miracles, and now it was time to look beyond the visible signs to see the truths to which they pointed. Jesus wanted to bring them to faith in his person as Son of God and Bread of life. The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves was a prelude to the deepest miracle of the gift of his Body and of his Blood, which would be able to communicate eternal life to all who believed.
"The only work that God wants is for them to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:29). It was not easy to hear these words, because people wanted to see visible signs so as not to have to face the challenge of faith, something that we too easily fall into. Faith is not always an easy way. When life is good and we are receiving many palpable signs of God's love, it is easy to believe; but it is in the tempestuous sea of human life that our faith must grow.
Jesus puts it clearly: "they seek me not because they have seen signs, but because they ate bread until they were satisfied." His words help us to discern and purify our intentions in their follow-up. We can ask ourselves: Why do I seek the Lord? Where do I look for the bread that feeds my life? What is feeding my life?
Easter time is an opportunity to rediscover in the small signs of each day the presence of God in our lives, in the people around us, in the events of our history. Let us pray in our prayer for the grace of opening ourselves to gratuity to follow the Risen Lord with a disinterested heart, believing and trusting fully in Him.
"Beloved Lord Jesus, strengthen the gift of faith that you have given me, I beg you, and help me to always seek you in all things." Amen
