Jn 6, 52-59

En aquel tiempo, los judíos se pusieron a discutir entre sí: "¿Cómo puede éste darnos a comer su carne?"

Jesús les dijo: "Yo les aseguro: Si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no podrán tener vida en ustedes. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna y yo lo resucitaré el último día.

Mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, permanece en mí y yo en él. Como el Padre, que me ha enviado, posee la vida y yo vivo por él, así también el que me come vivirá por mí.

Éste es el pan que ha bajado del cielo; no es como el maná que comieron sus padres, pues murieron. El que come de este pan vivirá para siempre''.

Esto lo dijo Jesús enseñando en la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm.

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,
“How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?” 
Jesus said to them,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood,
you do not have life within you. 
Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood
has eternal life,
and I will raise him on the last day.
For my Flesh is true food,
and my Blood is true drink. 
Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood
remains in me and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me
and I have life because of the Father,
so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. 
This is the bread that came down from heaven. 
Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died,
whoever eats this bread will live forever.” 
These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Con el evangelio de hoy, concluye lo que se llama el discurso del "Pan del Cielo".

La enseñanza que Jesús dio en la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm (Juan 6, 52-59) fue un sermón de clásico corte rabínico del siglo I. Como era Pascua, Jesús predicó sobre Éxodo 16, 4: “Voy a hacer que les llueva comida del cielo.” Jesús comenzó anunciando el tema tradicional de que el pan del cielo es la Palabra de Dios (Juan 6, 45). Siglos antes, Dios le había ordenado al profeta Ezequiel que comiera un rollo que contenía sus palabras (Ezequiel 3, 1-3). Los antiguos maestros de la sabiduría judaica decían que la Palabra de Dios es nuestro pan (Proverbios 9, 5; Eclesiástico 15, 3). Del mismo modo, Jesús exhortó a sus oyentes a alimentarse de su palabra.

Pero el Señor no solo ofreció el alimento de su palabra. A mitad del sermón, cambió el énfasis y predicó diciendo que su propia carne era nuestro pan: “Mi Carne es verdadera comida y mi Sangre es verdadera bebida.” Esto significa que la Carne y la Sangre de Jesús en la Eucaristía son tan reales como los panes que él multiplicó ese día para la multitud. El término griego trogein que aparece en el original, describe el proceso físico de masticar y tragar, lo que enfatiza claramente que Jesús nos da efectivamente la carne de su Cuerpo en la Eucaristía.

Estas palabras de Jesús son parte de la base bíblica en la que se apoya la afirmación de la presencia real de Jesús en la Eucaristía. With the gospel of today, it concludes what is called the "Bread of Heaven" discourse.

The teaching that Jesus gave in the synagogue of Capernaum (John 6, 52-59) was a sermon of classical rabbinic court of the first century. As it was Easter, Jesus preached on Exodus 16: 4: "I am going to make them rain food heaven. "Jesus began by announcing the traditional theme that the bread of heaven is the Word of God (John 6:45). Centuries earlier, God had commanded the prophet Ezekiel to eat a scroll containing his words (Ezekiel 3: 1-3). The ancient teachers of Judaic wisdom said that the Word of God is our bread (Proverbs 9, 5, Ecclesiasticus 15, 3). In the same way, Jesus exhorted his listeners to feed on his word.

But the Lord not only offered the food of his word. Halfway through the sermon, he changed the emphasis and preached saying that his own flesh was our bread: "My flesh is true food and my blood is real drink." This means that the flesh and blood of Jesus in the Eucharist are as real as the loaves he multiplied that day for the crowd. The Greek term trogein, which appears in the original, describes the physical process of chewing and swallowing, which clearly emphasizes that Jesus effectively gives us the flesh of his Body in the Eucharist.

These words of Jesus are part of the biblical basis on which the affirmation of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is based. When we participate in the Eucharistic Supper, remember that Jesus is sharing his divine life with us; therefore, we receive the life that he gives us, recognizing with gratitude that we are savoring the heavenly life of which we can all be partakers.

"Thank you, beloved Lord, for giving us your Body and your Blood as food and drink to have life and for our salvation and spiritual strength." Amen
