Obras de piedad

Mt 6, 1-6. 16-18

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Tengan cuidado de no practicar sus obras de piedad delante de los hombres para que los vean. De lo contrario, no tendrán recompensa con su Padre celestial.

Por lo tanto, cuando des limosna, no lo anuncies con trompeta, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y por las calles, para que los alaben los hombres. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace la derecha, para que tu limosna quede en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará.

Cuando ustedes hagan oración, no sean como los hipócritas, a quienes les gusta orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las plazas, para que los vea la gente. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando vayas a orar, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora ante tu Padre, que está allí, en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará.

Cuando ustedes ayunen, no pongan cara triste, como esos hipócritas que descuidan la apariencia de su rostro, para que la gente note que están ayunando. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara, para que no sepa la gente que estás ayunando, sino tu Padre, que está en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará''.

in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,

But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to others to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.

Meditacion:

El evangelio de hoy es un manual de "buenas costumbres" cristianas.

Jesus nos nombra tres obras de piedad: dar limosna, hacer oracion y ayunar y como deben ser tan naturales para nosotros que nadie note que estamos haciendolas.

No hay nada peor que alguien que usa las obras de piedad para buscar el reconocimiento de los demas. La piedad y la misericordia deben ser parte natural de nuestra vida por lo que debemos ejercerla de manera permanente e incosciente, sin siquiera pensarlas, deben ser actitudes diarias.

Hay un modo de vivir la fe y el amor que resulta dependiente, caprichoso y mercantil: Dios buscando comprar el afecto del hombre; el hombre buscando comprar el agrado de Dios. Ambos afanados por obtener una recompensa que los engrandezca. En este caso, el centro de la búsqueda no es la persona amada sino el propio beneficio del amante. Cuando tomamos esta vereda, la avidez ocupa el lugar de la gratuidad.

Pero el recto amor cristiano nunca es así. La fe debe ser libre, ordenada y pródiga: Dios buscando al hombre con toda su caridad; el hombre buscando a Dios con toda su libertad. Ambos apremiados por ver cumplida la felicidad del otro. Entonces, sí. Entonces adviene una recompensa impensada que es el amor mismo, aquel que nace cuando todo nuestro querer e interés se dirigen hacia aquel a quien amamos y no hacia lo que nosotros recibimos de él. Cuando nos buscamos de esta manera, somos a la vez el premio y los premiados.

“Señor Jesús, ayúdame a ser mas piadoso y alimentarme más de tu palabra.” Amen

Today's Gospel is a manual of Christian "good habits".

Jesus names three works of piety: giving alms, praying and fasting and how they should be so natural for us that no one notices that we are doing them.

There is nothing worse than someone who uses the works of piety to seek the recognition of others. Piety and mercy must be a natural part of our lives, so we must exercise it permanently and unceasingly, without even thinking about them, they must be daily attitudes.

There is a way of living faith and love that is dependent, capricious and mercantile: God seeking to buy the affection of man; the man looking to buy the pleasure of God. Both are striving to obtain a reward that enhances them. In this case, the center of the search is not the loved one but the lover's own benefit. When we take this path, avidity takes the place of gratuity.

But straight Christian love is never like that. Faith must be free, orderly and prodigal: God seeking man with all his charity; the man looking for God with all his freedom. Both pressed to see the happiness of the other fulfilled. Then yes. Then comes an unthinkable reward that is love itself, that which is born when all our will and interest are directed towards the one we love and not towards what we receive from him. When we seek ourselves in this way, we are both the prize and the winners.

"Lord Jesus, help me to be more pious and feed more of your word." Amen
