Mt 9, 14-17

En aquel tiempo, los discípulos de Juan fueron a ver a Jesús y le preguntaron: “¿Por qué tus discípulos no ayunan, mientras nosotros y los fariseos sí ayunamos?” Jesús les respondió: “¿Cómo pueden llevar luto los amigos del esposo, mientras él está con ellos? Pero ya vendrán días en que les quitarán al esposo, y entonces sí ayunarán.

Nadie remienda un vestido viejo con un parche de tela nueva, porque el remiendo nuevo encoge, rompe la tela vieja y así se hace luego más grande la rotura. Nadie echa el vino nuevo en odres viejos, porque los odres se rasgan, se tira el vino y se echan a perder los odres. El vino nuevo se echa en odres nuevos y así las dos cosas se conservan’’.

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
"Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?"
Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast.
No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth,
for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.
People do not put new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined.
Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved."

Meditacion:

Entre todas las practicas religiosas que podemos sumar a nuestra vida diaria la del ayuno es la menos popular.

Ayunamos en cuaresma y si nos acordamos. Y hemos, honestamente, inventado toda una seria de excepciones que distorsiona la practica.

Pero fijense lo que ocurre en este evangelio. Jesus dice "El vino nuevo se echa en odres nuevos y así las dos cosas se conservan’’. O sea que si no llevamos a cabo nuestras practicas espirituales con corazon renovado, de nada sirven.

No ayunamos simplemente porque seamos pecadores, aunque sí lo somos; ayunamos porque anhelamos ver a Jesús; ayunamos para poder alejar la atención de nosotros mismos y más bien centrarla en el Único que puede hacer realidad todas nuestras esperanzas y deseos. Cada vez que nos privamos de algún placer, ya sea un manjar especial, pasar tiempo frente a la televisión o dormir media hora más por la mañana, estamos proclamando que la vida es mucho más que la búsqueda de lo agradable y la comodidad. Estamos declarando que la idea que tiene el mundo de la felicidad y la satisfacción no es necesariamente la correcta.

Ayunar nos da la oportunidad de buscar a Jesús con todo el corazón, de forma que podamos encontrarlo (Jeremías 29, 13). Nos ayuda a ponernos por encima de las distracciones de este mundo y de los deseos de la carne para poder enfocar la atención en lo que realmente importa. Esta es la razón por la cual Jesús nos dijo que no debemos vernos tristes cuando ayunamos, porque el ayuno debe hacerse con un corazón y una fe expectantes, no con tristeza ni actitud de desánimo, porque estamos buscando al Señor que nos ha redimido, estamos buscando al Esposo, cuyo amor por nosotros no conoce límites, y él a su vez nos está buscando a nosotros.

“Señor Jesús, yo creo que tú estás a mi lado, pero en realidad no puedo verte. Ayúdame a centrar mi corazón en ti para poder encontrarte y llenarme de tu amor.” Amen

We do not fast simply because we are sinners, although we are; we fast because we long to see Jesus; we fast so we can turn our attention away from ourselves and focus instead on the One who can make all our hopes and desires come true. Every time we deprive ourselves of some pleasure, be it a special delicacy, spend time in front of the television or sleep half an hour more in the morning, we are proclaiming that life is much more than the pursuit of pleasantness and comfort. We are declaring that the world's idea of ​​happiness and satisfaction is not necessarily correct.

Fasting gives us the opportunity to seek Jesus with all our heart, so that we can find Him (Jeremiah 29, 13). It helps us to put ourselves above the distractions of this world and the desires of the flesh so that we can focus our attention on what really matters. This is the reason why Jesus told us that we should not look sad when we fast, because fasting should be done with an expectant heart and faith, not with sadness or discouragement, because we are looking for the Lord who has redeemed us, we are looking for the Husband, whose love for us knows no limits, and he in turn is looking for us.

"Lord Jesus, I believe that you are by my side, but in reality I can not see you. Help me focus my heart on you so I can find you and fill you with your love. "Amen
