Ovejas entre lobos

Mt 10, 16-23

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “Yo los envío como ovejas entre lobos. Sean, pues, precavidos como las serpientes y sencillos como las palomas.

Cuídense de la gente, porque los llevarán a los tribunales, los azotarán en las sinagogas, los llevarán ante gobernadores y reyes por mi causa; así darán testimonio de mí ante ellos y ante los paganos. Pero, cuando los enjuicien, no se preocupen por lo que van a decir o por la forma de decirlo, porque en ese momento se les inspirará lo que han de decir. Pues no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará por ustedes.

El hermano entregará a su hermano a la muerte, y el padre a su hijo; los hijos se levantarán contra sus padres y los matarán; todos los odiarán a ustedes por mi causa, pero el que persevere hasta el fin, se salvará.

Cuando los persigan en una ciudad, huyan a otra. Yo les aseguro que no alcanzarán a recorrer todas las ciudades de Israel, antes de que venga el Hijo del hombre’’.

"Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
But beware of men,
for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
before the Son of Man comes."

Meditacion:

Cuando uno lee este pasaje del evangelio, la verdad es que es de temer.

Jesus hace una advertencia y es una advertencia muy seria. Sus seguidores serian perseguidos, torturados y muertos; serian rechazados incluso por su propia familia.

Muchos de nosotros estamos viviendo esta realidad de sufrimiento por Jesus. Muchos de nosotros recibimos criticas y burlas por nuestro compromiso con nuestra fe.

Ante la persecución, el cristiano no puede sumirse en el pánico y quedar paralizado en el pavor. Atender a las enseñanzas del evangelio supone aprender a confiar en el Espíritu de Jesús que lo conduce por los nebulosos caminos del discernimiento. ¿Qué hacer para no convertirse, a su vez, en lobos, ante sus ataques inmisericordes? Su propuesta se orienta en cuatro direcciones.

Ser sencillos como palomas y sagaces como serpientes. Usar la inteligencia práctica. Decía Chesterton con fino humor inglés que el cristiano al entrar en la iglesia “debe quitarse el sombrero, pero no la cabeza”. Pues eso, simplicidad y astucia ante el adversario. No cabe ni la temeridad, ni la ingenuidad.

Cuidarse de la gente. Que no significa desconfiar de todos, alejarse de las personas, rechazarlas, contraatacarlas, o amenazarlas con castigos de lo alto o de lo bajo... El seguidor sabe distinguir el “juicio temerario” de la “duda metódica”. Ser avisados no es faltar a la caridad. Es, sencillamente, abrir los ojos y analizar lo que de retorcido puede contener el corazón de una persona.

No preocuparse de lo que se ha de decir. Evitar el agobio paralizador generado por el miedo en los momentos de dificultad. ¡Es tan mal consejero! Los sufrimientos son más duros –y peligrosos- de sobrellevar cuando se imaginan que cuando suceden realmente. A cada momento el Espíritu sopla y guía. Nosotros ponemos las velas, Él el viento. También en los peligros.

Huir a otra ciudad, cuando sean perseguidos una. No hay concesión alguna a la temeridad, ni al aventurerismo. La prudencia dicta sortear peligros, esquivar golpes y, cuando sea posible y necesario, retirarse hábilmente. El espíritu del evangelio no es para héroes.

Pero la protección y la sabiduría nos llegan del Espíritu Santo, que recibimos cuando buscamos a Dios en la oración; su fuerza nos viene también de la Palabra de Dios, y cuando nos alimentamos espiritualmente con la Sagrada Eucaristía y recibimos otros sacramentos, como la Confesión. Si acogemos la verdad que nos presenta la Palabra de Dios, recibimos fuerza y conocimiento para mantenernos firmes en la fe en Cristo y en nuestra forma de vida.

“Padre celestial, gracias por tu promesa de enseñarnos lo sabio y lo bueno. Ayúdame cada día a amar a nuestros enemigos y orar por los que nos atacan, para que seamos testigos de que tu Hijo está verdaderamente vivo.” Amen

But protection and wisdom come to us from the Holy Spirit, which we receive when we seek God in prayer; Their strength comes also from the Word of God, and when we nourish ourselves spiritually with the Holy Eucharist and receive other sacraments, such as Confession. If we accept the truth presented to us by the Word of God, we receive strength and knowledge to stand firm in faith in Christ and in our way of life.
