Mc 6, 17-29

GospelMK 6:17-29
Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison
on account of Herodias,
the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.
John had said to Herod,
"It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Herodias harbored a grudge against him
and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man,
and kept him in custody.
When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed,
yet he liked to listen to him.
She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday,
gave a banquet for his courtiers,
his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee.
Herodias' own daughter came in
and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests.
The king said to the girl,
"Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you."
He even swore many things to her,
"I will grant you whatever you ask of me,
even to half of my kingdom."
She went out and said to her mother,
"What shall I ask for?"
She replied, "The head of John the Baptist."
The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request,
"I want you to give me at once
on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
The king was deeply distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests
he did not wish to break his word to her.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders
to bring back his head.
He went off and beheaded him in the prison.
He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl.
The girl in turn gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about it,
they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Meditacion:

After three days of a long sermon of Jesus today we commemorate the martyrdom of John the Baptist.
John was the last prophet, he came to fulfill the professions of the Old Testament and it is so important that not only is Catholicism celebrated but also Islam and Baha'i faith; Even the Essenes revere him as one of ours.
He was the son of a priest, of David's caste, that is, he had a solid formation in the faith.
John was an ascetic, spent long periods of time fasting and living in the desert from which he returned to begin announcing the coming of Jesus,
I baptized Jesus and recognized him as the Savior He proclaimed; in a very beautiful passage of the gospel he tells Jesus that He was not even able to tie his sandals to what Jesus responds to “Let it be this way this time, because it is good that we comply in this way with all that God has commanded ”(Matthew 3:15).
For a second let's contemplate John, so determined in his faith and so sure of his message. Today we certainly need people like John, willing to preach the message, willing to show the gospel with their lives, without fear, without double standards.
One of the most difficult things in these times is to act, in every moment, as Jesus would do. And we don't do it for convenience, for fear, for comfort, for vanity or for many other things.
John no, He was convinced of what he was doing; He had known Jesus while still in his mother's womb, I never doubt, I never ask, I only accept the will of God and his ministry.
In the midst of a life as rushed as we live, the example of John the Baptist is a beacon of what our life should be as Christians.
"Eternal Father help me to follow the example of John the Baptist and have a deep faith and an open heart to follow you" Amen
