Ten compasion

Mt 15, 21-28

En aquel tiempo, Jesús se retiró a la comarca de Tiro y Sidón. Entonces una mujer cananea le salió al encuentro y se puso a gritar: “Señor, hijo de David, ten compasión de mí. Mi hija está terriblemente atormentada por un demonio”. Jesús no le contestó una sola palabra; pero los discípulos se acercaron y le rogaban: “Atiéndela, porque 

viene gritando detrás de nosotros”. Él les contestó: “Yo no he sido enviado sino a las ovejas descarriadas de la casa de Israel”.

Ella se acercó entonces a Jesús y postrada ante él, le dijo: “¡Señor, ayúdame!” El le respondió: “No está bien quitarles el pan a los hijos para echárselo a los perritos”. Pero ella replicó: “Es cierto, Señor; pero también los perritos se comen las migajas que caen de la mesa de sus amos”. Entonces Jesús le respondió: “Mujer, ¡qué grande es tu fe! Que se cumpla lo que deseas”. Y en aquel mismo instante quedó curada su hija.

At that time Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out,
"Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David!
My daughter is tormented by a demon."
But he did not say a word in answer to her.
His disciples came and asked him,
"Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us."
He said in reply,
"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
But the woman came and did him homage, saying, "Lord, help me."
He said in reply,
"It is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs."
She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps
that fall from the table of their masters."
Then Jesus said to her in reply,
"O woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish."
And her daughter was healed from that hour.

Meditacion:

Fue curiosa la actitud de Cristo en el Evangelio de hoy. Al principio no parecía tener interés alguno en atender a la pobre mujer cananea que le suplicaba a gritos; parecía conformarse con las barreras culturales que separaban a los judíos y los cananeos, cosa rara en su forma de actuar. La mujer tuvo que implorar misericordia repetidamente antes de que el Señor decidiera favorecerla. ¿Por qué actuó así?

Jesús siempre escucha el clamor de nuestro corazón, y no deja que suframos más allá de lo que podemos soportar. La demora en la respuesta de Cristo era un desafío para que la fe de la mujer se fortaleciera con la perseverancia. Este incidente encierra una profunda lección para nosotros: No importa quiénes seamos ni qué lugar ocupemos en la sociedad, nuestra fe en Cristo puede derribar cualquier barrera hasta llegar al corazón de nuestro Salvador.

La fe de la cananea no era solo una aceptación intelectual de unos conceptos inciertos acerca de Dios. Aunque no entendía cabalmente quién era Jesús, confió en él con todo su corazón. Sabía que tenía una gran necesidad y se daba cuenta de que Cristo era su única esperanza; por eso no se avergonzó de pedirle auxilio, hasta que él respondiera. Ella, como San Pablo, no dudó en proclamar públicamente su fe en Cristo ni en reconocer su necesidad (véase Romanos 1, 16; 2 Timoteo 1, 12). Esto fue lo que le agradó al Señor. Conmovido por la fe de ella, le dio su aprobación: “¡Oh, mujer, qué grande es tu fe!”

Jesús no se avergüenza de llamarnos hermanos suyos, seamos quienes seamos. Vino a auxiliarnos en nuestra debilidad y espera que pongamos en él toda nuestra confianza y esperanza. ¿Cuáles son las barreras de miedo, duda o desaliento que te hacen difícil a ti pedirle ayuda al Señor? Imita a la cananea y ruégale al Señor que te atienda ahora mismo y pídele con insistencia. Invítalo a entrar en tu vida para que te comunique salud, para llevar el Evangelio a tu familia y cambiar el mundo entero. Jesús es fiel y responderá a su pueblo conforme a la fe de cada uno.

“Señor mío Jesucristo, ayúdame, te ruego, a imitar a la cananea y demostrar la grandeza de tus obras en mi vida y en el mundo.” Amen

The attitude of Christ in today's Gospel was curious. At first he seemed to have no interest in attending to the poor Canaanite woman who was begging for him; It seemed to conform to the cultural barriers that separated the Jews and the Canaanites, a rare thing in their way of acting. The woman had to implore mercy repeatedly before the Lord decided to favor her. Why did he act like this?

Jesus always hears the cry of our heart, and does not let us suffer beyond what we can bear. The delay in Christ's response was a challenge for the woman's faith to be strengthened with perseverance. This incident contains a profound lesson for us: No matter who we are or what place we occupy in society, our faith in Christ can break down any barrier until it reaches the heart of our Savior.

Canaanite faith was not just an intellectual acceptance of uncertain concepts about God. Although he did not fully understand who Jesus was, he trusted him with all his heart. He knew that he had a great need and realized that Christ was his only hope; that is why he was not ashamed to ask for help, until he responded. She, like St. Paul, did not hesitate to publicly proclaim her faith in Christ or recognize her need (see Romans 1:16; 2 Timothy 1:12). This was what pleased the Lord. Moved by her faith, he gave her approval: "Oh, woman, how great is your faith!"

Jesus is not ashamed to call us his brothers, let us be who we are. He came to help us in our weakness and expects us to put all our trust and hope in him. What are the barriers of fear, doubt or discouragement that make it difficult for you to ask the Lord for help? Imitate the Canaanite and beg the Lord to attend to you right now and ask him insistently. Invite him to enter your life to communicate health to you, to bring the Gospel to your family and change the entire world. Jesus is faithful and will respond to his people according to the faith of each one.

“My Lord Jesus Christ, help me, I beg you, to imitate the Canaanite and demonstrate the greatness of your works in my life and in the world.” Amen
