En tiempos dificiles, miremos la transfiguracion

Lc 9, 28-36

En aquel tiempo, Jesús se hizo acompañar de Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y subió a un monte para hacer oración. Mientras oraba, su rostro cambió de aspecto y sus vestiduras se hicieron blancas y relampagueantes. De pronto aparecieron conversando con él dos personajes, rodeados de esplendor: eran Moisés y Elías. Y hablaban de la muerte que le esperaba en Jerusalén.

Pedro y sus compañeros estaban rendidos de sueño; pero, despertándose, vieron la gloria de Jesús y de los que estaban con él. Cuando éstos se retiraban, Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Maestro, sería bueno que nos quedáramos aquí y que hiciéramos tres chozas: una para ti, una para Moisés y otra para Elías”, sin saber lo que decía.

No había terminado de hablar, cuando se formó una nube que los cubrió; y ellos, al verse envueltos por la nube, se llenaron de miedo. De la nube salió una voz que decía: “Éste es mi Hijo, mi escogido; escúchenlo”. Cuando cesó la voz, se quedó Jesús solo.

Los discípulos guardaron silencio y por entonces no dijeron a nadie nada de lo que habían visto.

Jesus took Peter, John, and James 
and went up a mountain to pray.
While he was praying his face changed in appearance 
and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, 
who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus 
that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, 
but becoming fully awake, 
they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, 
“Master, it is good that we are here;
let us make three tents,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
But he did not know what he was saying.
While he was still speaking, 
a cloud came and cast a shadow over them,
and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
Then from the cloud came a voice that said, 
“This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
They fell silent and did not at that time 
tell anyone what they had seen.

Meditacion:

Pedro fue uno de los tres testigos que presenciaron la Transfiguración del Señor. Junto con Santiago y Juan, vio a Jesús glorificado y a Moisés y Elías que hablaban con él; además, escuchó la voz de aprobación de Dios. Ahora, algunas décadas más tarde, Pedro habla sobre este glorioso evento: “Por haberlo visto con nuestros propios ojos en toda su grandeza… mientras estábamos con el Señor en el monte santo.” (2 Pedro 1, 16. 18). No hay duda de que la Transfiguración fue uno de los eventos más memorables que presenció el apóstol.

Es lógico que Pedro hable sobre la Transfiguración en términos de una revelación esplendorosa y especial que tuvo, y eso fue lo que hizo, como también es razonable que exaltara la gloria de Cristo transfigurado, y así lo hizo. Pero también describió esta especie de “visión” del cielo como una luz en medio de la oscuridad. Pedro entendió que Jesús le hizo experimentar este episodio con el fin de animarlo y prepararlo para la oscuridad que lo envolvería cuando Jesús tuviese que sufrir su Pasión: Pedro, aférrate a esta visión. Recuérdala cuando te sientas tentando a perder la esperanza. Yo soy el Hijo de Dios, y voy a resucitar.

Ese es un mensaje que todos necesitamos escuchar. A veces parecería que dondequiera que dirijamos la mirada solo vemos oscuridad: guerras, miseria, delincuencia, aborto provocado, familias separadas. Todas estas realidades pueden desanimarnos al punto de darnos por vencidos en el llamado a la búsqueda de la santidad.

Pero recuerda las palabras de San Pedro: la Transfiguración de Cristo revela la verdadera e inmutable base de toda la realidad; Jesús está glorificado, él es el Hijo amado del Padre y reina sobre todo el universo. Aun cuando parece que el enemigo triunfa, la oscuridad jamás podrá apagar la luz de Cristo.

Mira a tu alrededor, y encontrarás destellos de luz en lugares inesperados, en obras de compasión por los que sufren, en actos de valentía frente al enemigo, en actos de abnegación por el bien de un extraño o un ser querido. Así como el amor de Jesús brilló durante su propia crucifixión, su luz puede resplandecer hoy en cada esquina oscura. Esa luz continuará brillando hasta que Jesús vuelva. Confía en él, y su luz brillará en ti cada vez más.

“Señor Jesús, ayúdame a fijar mis ojos en ti en medio de la oscuridad.”

Peter was one of the three witnesses who witnessed the Transfiguration of the Lord. Together with James and John, he saw Jesus glorified and Moses and Elijah speaking with him; In addition, he heard God's voice of approval. Now, a few decades later, Peter speaks about this glorious event: "For having seen it with our own eyes in all its greatness ... while we were with the Lord on the holy mountain." (2 Peter 1:16, 18). There is no doubt that the Transfiguration was one of the most memorable events that the apostle witnessed.

It is logical that Peter talk about the Transfiguration in terms of a splendid and special revelation he had, and that was what he did, as it is also reasonable that he exalted the glory of the transfigured Christ, and he did so. But he also described this kind of "vision" of heaven as a light in the midst of darkness. Peter understood that Jesus made him experience this episode in order to cheer him up and prepare him for the darkness that would engulf him when Jesus had to suffer his Passion: Peter, hold on to this vision. Remember it when you feel tempted to lose hope. I am the Son of God, and I will rise again.

That is a message we all need to hear. Sometimes it would seem that wherever we look, we only see darkness: wars, misery, crime, abortion, separated families. All these realities can discourage us to the point of giving up on the call to the search for holiness.

But remember the words of St. Peter: the Transfiguration of Christ reveals the true and immutable basis of all reality; Jesus is glorified, he is the beloved Son of the Father and reigns over the entire universe. Even when it seems that the enemy triumphs, darkness can never extinguish the light of Christ.

Look around, and you will find flashes of light in unexpected places, in works of compassion for those who suffer, in acts of courage against the enemy, in acts of self-denial for the sake of a stranger or a loved one. Just as Jesus' love shone during his own crucifixion, his light can shine today in every dark corner. That light will continue to shine until Jesus returns. Trust him, and his light will shine on you more and more.

"Lord Jesus, help me to fix my eyes on you in the midst of darkness."
