Quien dicen que soy?

Mt 16, 13-23

En aquel tiempo, cuando llegó Jesús a la región de Cesarea de Filipo, hizo esta pregunta a sus discípulos: “¿Quién dice la gente que es el Hijo del hombre?” Ellos le respondieron: “Unos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, que Elías; otros, que Jeremías o alguno de los profetas”.

Luego les preguntó: “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Simón Pedro tomó la palabra y le dijo: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo”.

Jesús le dijo entonces: “¡Dichoso tú, Simón, hijo de Juan, porque esto no te lo ha revelado ningún hombre, sino mi Padre, que está en los cielos! Y yo te digo a ti que tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia. Los poderes del infierno no prevalecerán sobre ella. Yo te daré las llaves del Reino de los cielos; todo lo que ates en la tierra quedará atado en el cielo, y todo lo que desates en la tierra quedará desatado en el cielo”. Y les ordenó a sus discípulos que no dijeran a nadie que él era el Mesías.

A partir de entonces, comenzó Jesús a anunciar a sus discípulos que tenía que ir a Jerusalén para padecer allí mucho de parte de los ancianos, de los sumos sacerdotes y de los escribas; que tenía que ser condenado a muerte y resucitar al tercer día.

Pedro se lo llevó aparte y trató de disuadirlo, diciéndole: “No lo permita Dios, Señor. Eso no te puede suceder a ti”. Pero Jesús se volvió a Pedro y le dijo: “¡Apártate de mí, Satanás, y no intentes hacerme tropezar en mi camino, porque tu modo de pensar no es el de Dios, sino el de los hombres!”

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
and he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter said in reply,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Then he strictly ordered his disciples
to tell no one that he was the Christ.

From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly
from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.
Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him,
"God forbid, Lord!  No such thing shall ever happen to you."
He turned and said to Peter,
"Get behind me, Satan!  You are an obstacle to me.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."

Meditacion:

En el evangelio de hoy contemplamos la fundacion de la Iglesia Catolica. Jesus es la piedra fundamental y la Iglesia, todos nosotros, sus seguidores.

Pero fijense un detalle. El de Jesus es un gran discurso, un discurso glorioso; estaba pasando el mando a Pedro... y Pedro, sencillamente, no estuvo a la altura de la circunstancia.

No hacia ni 5 minutos que Jesus le habia dicho que se iba a quedar a cargo de todo cuando (tal vez en su primer acto oficial como encargado de la Iglesia) lo reprende a Jesus y le dice que no diga esas cosas de que lo iban a martirizar.

Jesus reconoce un demonio. Muchas veces la Iglesia y nosotros mismos no estuvieron "a la altura de las circunstancias" con el momento personal de cada uno de nosotros o con el momento politico.

La Iglesia esta formada por personas, personas que seguimos a Jesus mas o menos por donde pensamos que es correcto; pero la Casa de Dios es amplia y mientras todos peregrinemos hacia El, las posiciones a veces pueden parecer inusualmente distintas.

Del evangelio de hoy rescatemos eso entonces, veamos a los primeros discípulos de Cristo tal como eran: no como personajes idealizados, sino como gente de carne y hueso, como nosotros, con sus virtudes y defectos; esta circunstancia nos aproxima a ellos y nos ayuda a ver que el crecimiento en la vida cristiana es un camino que todos debemos recorrer, pues nadie nace siendo sabio y experimentado.

Ahora, sumidos como estamos en una sociedad que propone como ideales el éxito material, el aprendizaje sin esfuerzo y la obtención del máximo provecho con un mínimo de trabajo, es fácil que también acabemos viendo las cosas más como los hombres que como Dios. Por eso necesitamos adentrarnos en la Palabra de Dios, hacer oración y pedir la luz del Espíritu Santo.

“Padre misericordioso, te damos gracias por tu santa Iglesia Católica. Ilumina también a los que rechazan a Cristo para que se conviertan, sean iluminados y no perezcan.” Amen

In today's Gospel we contemplate the foundation of the Catholic Church. Jesus is the fundamental stone and the Church, all of us, his followers.

But notice a detail. Jesus' is a great speech, a glorious speech; He was passing command to Pedro ... and Pedro simply did not live up to the circumstances.

It was not even 5 minutes that Jesus had told him that he was going to be in charge of everything when (perhaps in his first official act as head of the Church) he rebukes Jesus and tells him not to say those things that they were going to to martyrize

Jesus recognizes a demon. Many times the Church and ourselves were not "living up to the circumstances" with the personal moment of each one of us or with the political moment.

The Church is made up of people, people who follow Jesus more or less where we think it is right; but the House of God is wide and as long as we all pilgrimage to Him, the positions can sometimes seem unusually different.

From today's Gospel we rescue that then, let's see the first disciples of Christ as they were: not as idealized characters, but as people of flesh and blood, like us, with their virtues and defects; This circumstance brings us closer to them and helps us to see that growth in the Christian life is a path that we must all travel, because no one is born being wise and experienced.

Now, plunged as we are in a society that proposes as ideal the material success, the effortless learning and obtaining the maximum benefit with a minimum of work, it is easy that we also end up seeing things more as men than as God. That is why we need to go into the Word of God, pray and ask for the light of the Holy Spirit.

“Merciful Father, we thank you for your holy Catholic Church. Enlighten also those who reject Christ to convert, be enlightened and not perish. ”Amen
