Tu eres el Hijo de Dios

Jn 1, 45-51

En aquel tiempo, Felipe se encontró con Natanael y le dijo: "Hemos encontrado a aquel de quien escribió Moisés en la ley y también los profetas. Es Jesús de Nazaret, el hijo de José". Natanael replicó: "¿Acaso puede salir de Nazaret algo bueno?" Felipe le contestó: "Ven y lo verás".

Cuando Jesús vio que Natanael se acercaba, dijo: "Éste es un verdadero israelita en el que no hay doblez". Natanael le preguntó: "¿De dónde me conoces?" Jesús le respondió: "Antes de que Felipe te llamara, te vi cuando estabas debajo de la higuera". Respondió Natanael: "Maestro, tú eres el Hijo de Dios, tú eres el rey de Israel". Jesús le contestó: "Tú crees, porque te he dicho que te vi debajo de la higuera. Mayores cosas has de ver". Después añadió: "Yo les aseguro que verán el cielo abierto y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre".

Philip found Nathanael and told him,
"We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
But Nathanael said to him,
"Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" 
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this."
And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Meditacion:

Hoy leemos de "La palabra entre nosotros":

A la sombra de una higuera. Ahí fue donde Jesús vio a Natanael (Bartolomé). ¿Qué estaba haciendo allí? Algunos han opinado que, dado que era costumbre entre los judíos leer las Escrituras a la sombra de una higuera, probablemente Natanael estaba meditando en las promesas de Dios.

Durante siglos, las promesas de Dios han sustentado la fe de Israel con palabras de consuelo, orientación y esperanza. Una novia radiante, una ciudad espléndida y un templo resplandeciente con la gloria del Señor, son imágenes que hacen contemplar un futuro esplendoroso y apacible, en el que Dios habitaría entre su pueblo y haría que ellos fueran una luz para el resto del mundo.

Natanael debe haberse sentido reanimado al reflexionar sobre esta magnífica promesa de vida, aunque aún tenía que lidiar con la ocupación romana. Quizás esto le abrió los ojos para reconocer a Jesús como “el Hijo de Dios” y “el rey de Israel” que pondría todo en orden. Y lo que Jesús le respondió fue como decirle: Mantente atento y ten fe. ¡No has visto nada todavía!

Esto es lo que Jesús también nos dice a nosotros. Al igual que el discípulo, hemos recibido hermosas promesas acerca de la vida futura, la cual sabemos que ya ha comenzado. Los que hemos sido bautizados en Cristo, hemos nacido del agua y del Espíritu; hemos pasado a ser hijos de Dios y ciudadanos del cielo. Ahora, como lo decía Santa Catalina de Siena, “Todo el camino hacia el cielo es el cielo.”

Por eso, es bueno que todos dediquemos tiempo a la contemplación de las magníficas promesas que Dios nos ha dado. Tal vez queramos tratar de imaginarnos cómo será el cielo. Incluso podemos pensar en nuestros seres queridos que nos han precedido y “verlos” con Jesús, orando por nosotros, y animándonos a seguir adelante por el camino de la fe.

Así pues, hermano, siéntate hoy a la sombra de tu higuera cualquiera que ésta sea: un sofá, tu rincón de oración, la capilla de adoración o frente al Santísimo. Busca el lugar donde te sea más fácil hacer oración concentrada y sin interrupciones. Eleva el corazón hacia el Señor y deja que sus promesas llenen tu mente y tu corazón. Luego, mantente quieto y escucha su voz.

“Señor mío, Jesucristo, aquí estoy, haciendo oración. Déjame contemplar tu gloria, te lo ruego.” Amen

In the shadow of a fig tree. That was where Jesus saw Nathanael (Bartholomew). What was he doing there? Some have opined that, since it was customary among the Jews to read the Scriptures in the shadow of a fig tree, Nathanael was probably meditating on the promises of God.

For centuries, God's promises have sustained Israel's faith with words of comfort, guidance and hope. A radiant bride, a splendid city and a temple shining with the glory of the Lord, are images that make us contemplate a splendid and peaceful future, in which God would dwell among his people and make them a light for the rest of the world.

Nathanael must have felt revived by reflecting on this magnificent promise of life, although he still had to deal with the Roman occupation. Perhaps this opened his eyes to recognize Jesus as "the Son of God" and "the king of Israel" who would put everything in order. And what Jesus answered was how to say: Stay tuned and have faith. You haven't seen anything yet!

This is what Jesus also tells us. Like the disciple, we have received beautiful promises about the future life, which we know has already begun. Those of us who have been baptized in Christ have been born of water and the Spirit; We have become children of God and citizens of heaven. Now, as Santa Catalina de Siena put it, "All the way to heaven is heaven."

Therefore, it is good that we all dedicate time to contemplate the magnificent promises that God has given us. Maybe we want to try to imagine what heaven will be like. We can even think of our loved ones that have preceded us and "see" them with Jesus, praying for us, and encouraging us to move forward on the path of faith.

So, brother, sit today in the shadow of your fig tree whatever it may be: a sofa, your prayer corner, the chapel of worship or in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Find the place where it is easier to do concentrated prayer without interruption. Raise your heart to the Lord and let his promises fill your mind and your heart. Then, keep still and listen to his voice.

“My Lord, Jesus Christ, here I am, praying. Let me contemplate your glory, I beg you. ”Amen
