Lc 13, 1-9
GospelLK 13:1-9
Some people told Jesus about the Galileans
whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices.
He said to them in reply,
"Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way
they were greater sinners than all other Galileans?
By no means!
But I tell you, if you do not repent,
you will all perish as they did!
Or those eighteen people who were killed
when the tower at Siloam fell on them—
do you think they were more guilty
than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem?
By no means!
But I tell you, if you do not repent,
you will all perish as they did!"
And he told them this parable:
"There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard,
and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none,
he said to the gardener,
'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree
but have found none.
So cut it down.
Why should it exhaust the soil?'
He said to him in reply,
'Sir, leave it for this year also,
and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;
it may bear fruit in the future.
If not you can cut it down.'"

Meditacion:
Amen

In our head it is very common to think that when something bad happens to us "God is punishing us for my bad actions". It's automatic, we always look for a culprit outside of us.
But Jesus invites us to see this from another point of view; Jesus was a specialist in "lateral thinking" and I suppose to break with that human thought of cause and effect "something bad happens to me because I did something wrong" is what He was looking for.
The people who listened to Jesus in today's Gospel had this same way of thinking, because they asked him if the Galileans sent to Pilate deserved that destiny. Was it because they were great sinners, they wondered, that God allowed Herod to kill them in the Temple? The Lord's answer was probably not what they expected. Neither these poor Galileans, nor those who had been crushed when a tower collapsed, were more sinners than others. Jesus did not go in to explain why tragedies like these happened.
This is one of the great challenges of the Christian life: We do not always understand why God allows these things to happen. It is one of the mysteries that we can never understand, at least in this world. But we are fully sure of something: Our God is not spiteful or vengeful. He is not watching us to see when we sin and hit us when we pass the line. That is not the kind God who sent his only Son to suffer and die on a cross in order to save us. Immeasurable mercy and the "eye for an eye" trial simply cannot coexist.
At some point in life, all people have to experience pain, grief and loss. If you are going through some of this now, accept the truth: God always cares for you, because he loves you. Just as Jesus cried when his friend Lazarus died, remember that he also cries with you. In every tear you shed and every pain you experience, Christ is there with you and offers his comfort. If this is not what you are living now, keep this truth in mind when you talk to someone who is suffering.
You are not a sinner who deserves punishment. As the Pope said, you are a sinner whom the Lord has looked with mercy. That is the good news of the Gospel.
"Lord, I don't always understand the circumstances, but I do believe that you are a God of love who wants the best for me." Amen
