Signos de los tiempos

Lc 12, 54-59

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a la multitud: "Cuando ustedes ven que una nube se va levantando por el poniente, enseguida dicen que va a llover, y en efecto, llueve. Cuando el viento sopla del sur, dicen que hará calor, y así sucede. ¡Hipócritas! Si saben interpretar el aspecto que tienen el cielo y la tierra, ¿por qué no interpretan entonces los signos del tiempo presente? ¿Por qué, pues, no juzgan por ustedes mismos lo que les conviene hacer ahora?

Cuando vayas con tu adversario a presentarte ante la autoridad, haz todo lo posible por llegar a un acuerdo con él en el camino, para que no te lleve ante el juez, el juez te entregue a la policía, y la policía te meta en la cárcel. Yo te aseguro que no saldrás de ahí hasta que pagues el último centavo''.

Jesus said to the crowds,
“When you see a cloud rising in the west
you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does;
and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south
you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is.
You hypocrites!
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky;
why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate,
make an effort to settle the matter on the way;
otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge,
and the judge hand you over to the constable,
and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released
until you have paid the last penny.”

Meditacion:

En la época del Señor, la gente sabía entender bien los acontecimientos sociales, militares y económicos que observaba y sabía reaccionar ante los cambios del clima y prepararse para lo que pudiera suceder; pero no tenía la misma capacidad para analizar los hechos sobrenaturales, algunos de los cuales eran mucho más claros y definidos que los pronósticos del tiempo, y actuar de un modo conveniente.

Jesús les echaba en cara que no sabían interpretar los acontecimientos de la época en que vivían con la misma claridad con que pronosticaban las variaciones del clima. Las señales de los tiempos estaban frente a sus ojos: los panes se multiplicaban, los cojos caminaban, los pecadores empedernidos se arrepentían y se convertían y la buena nueva se predicaba a todos los que quisieran escuchar. Jesús mismo estaba entre ellos como manifestación del amor y el poder de su Padre. ¿Cómo podía alguien, viendo semejantes señales, no sentirse movido a analizar su propia conducta ante la magnificencia de las obras de Dios?

Hoy, tal como en el antiguo Israel, las señales están a la vista. Todo el mundo ha sido transformado por la resurrección de Jesucristo y por el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo, y las señales están allí, por todas partes. Vemos estas señales en los milagros y curaciones, la reconciliación entre matrimonios y amistades, el gozo cristiano y la comunión fraterna entre los fieles y otros creyentes. También las vemos en las personas que responden a la gracia de Dios y son portadores de su amor a los que sufren en nuestras parroquias, sirviendo en los comedores de beneficencia y en las clínicas para los necesitados. Estas son solo algunas de las cosas que vemos. Muchas más son las evidencias que existen en diversos lugares; solo basta mirar y escuchar para ver la obra de Dios en nuestro medio.

Jesús insta a sus oyentes a reconocer estas señales y actuar mientras aún haya tiempo. La parábola que habla de presentarse al magistrado para resolver las diferencias personales se refiere a Dios y a su juicio. ¿Te interpela esto a ti? ¿Tienes alguna diferencia de opinión o desacuerdo con algún familiar o amigo querido que haya enfriado la amistad? Piensa en lo que te dice el Señor y decídete a actuar.

“Padre celestial, dame la gracia de reconocer las señales de tu amor y buscar la reconciliación con mis seres queridos, amistades y conocidos.” Amen

At the time of the Lord, people knew how to understand the social, military and economic events they observed and knew how to react to climate changes and prepare for what might happen; but he did not have the same ability to analyze supernatural facts, some of which were much clearer and more definite than weather forecasts, and act in a convenient way.

Jesus blamed them that they could not interpret the events of the time in which they lived with the same clarity with which they predicted the variations of the climate. The signs of the times were before his eyes: the loaves multiplied, the lame ones walked, the hardened sinners repented and converted and the good news was preached to all who would listen. Jesus himself was among them as a manifestation of the love and power of his Father. How could anyone, seeing such signs, not feel moved to analyze their own behavior before the magnificence of God's works?

Today, as in ancient Israel, the signs are in sight. The whole world has been transformed by the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and the signs are there, everywhere. We see these signs in miracles and healings, reconciliation between marriages and friendships, Christian joy and fraternal communion between the faithful and other believers. We also see them in people who respond to the grace of God and are carriers of their love to those who suffer in our parishes, serving in soup kitchens and clinics for those in need. These are just some of the things we see. Many more are the evidences that exist in various places; just look and listen to see the work of God in our midst.

Jesus urges his listeners to recognize these signs and act while there is still time. The parable that speaks of presenting himself to the magistrate to resolve personal differences refers to God and his judgment. Does this question you? Do you have any difference of opinion or disagreement with a relative or friend who has cooled the friendship? Think about what the Lord tells you and decide to act.

"Heavenly Father, give me the grace to recognize the signs of your love and seek reconciliation with my loved ones, friends and acquaintances." Amen
