Lavarnos internamente

Lc 11, 37-41

En aquel tiempo, un fariseo invitó a Jesús a comer. Jesús fue a la casa del fariseo y se sentó a la mesa. El fariseo se extrañó de que Jesús no hubiera cumplido con la ceremonia de lavarse las manos antes de comer.

Pero el Señor le dijo: "Ustedes, los fariseos, limpian el exterior del vaso y del plato; en cambio, el interior de ustedes está lleno de robos y maldad. ¡Insensatos! ¿Acaso el que hizo lo exterior no hizo también lo interior? Den más bien limosna de lo que tienen y todo lo de ustedes quedará limpio".

After Jesus had spoken,
a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home.
He entered and reclined at table to eat.
The Pharisee was amazed to see
that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal.
The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees!
Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish,
inside you are filled with plunder and evil.
You fools!
Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?
But as to what is within, give alms,
and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

Meditacion:

Incluso hoy dia alguien que se sentara a almorzar con nosotros seria mal visto si no se lavara las manos. Es un signo de higiene y urbanidad el hacerlo.

En el tiempo de Jesus por ejemplo, los judíos estaban obligados a cumplir un estricto y minucioso código de conducta para mantenerse ritualmente puros, pero Jesús y sus discípulos no siempre realizaban los lavamientos ceremoniales que eran tradicionales antes de las comidas (Lucas 11, 38). El Señor no cumplía estas prácticas para enseñar que, para la fe, lo realmente esencial era otra cosa.

Las reglas religiosas habían pasado a ser algo tan engorroso que la gente se olvidaba de la esencia misma de la religión auténtica. Por ejemplo, era permitido que una persona hiciera su ofrenda de dinero a Dios y supuestamente eso lo eximía de su obligación de ayudar al sustento de sus padres ancianos y necesitados. Jesús enseñó que la práctica religiosa no es un fin en sí misma, sino el fruto del amor a Dios y al prójimo (Lucas 6, 1-11).

Pero antes de ir mas profundo en el tema de hoy, me gustaria hacerlo a la luz de la Santa, Doctora y Maestra de la Iglesia que celebramos hoy; Santa Teresa de Jesus es una de esas personas que ilumina con su vida la nuestra, que nos enseña el valor de la humildad en el camino hacia el Padre.

En efecto, un corazón dócil transmite el amor de Dios cuando actúa con caridad y compasión y comunica el mensaje del Evangelio. La verdadera religión se manifiesta en el amor, el servicio y la ayuda al prójimo. Nuestras obras de caridad son un buen reflejo de la religión auténtica cuando las hacemos especialmente para la gloria de Dios y sin esperar retribución.

Si para recobrar lo recobrado

tuve que haber perdido lo perdido,

si para conseguir lo conseguido

tuve que soportar lo soportado.

Si para estar ahora enamorado

fue menester haber estado herido,

tengo por bien sufrido lo sufrido

tengo por bien llorado lo llorado.

Porque después de todo he comprendido

que no se goza bien de lo gozado

sino después de haberlo padecido

porque después de todo he comprobado

que lo que tiene el árbol de florido

vive de lo que tiene sepultado.

Even today someone who sat down to have lunch with us would be frowned upon if he didn't wash his hands. It is a sign of hygiene and urbanity to do so.

In Jesus' time, for example, the Jews were obliged to comply with a strict and thorough code of conduct to remain ritually pure, but Jesus and his disciples did not always perform the ceremonial washings that were traditional before meals (Luke 11, 38) . The Lord did not fulfill these practices to teach that, for faith, what was really essential was something else.

Religious rules had become so cumbersome that people forgot the very essence of authentic religion. For example, it was permissible for a person to make his money offering to God and supposedly that exempted him from his obligation to help support his elderly and needy parents. Jesus taught that religious practice is not an end in itself, but the fruit of love for God and neighbor (Luke 6, 1-11).

But before going deeper into today's topic, I would like to do it in the light of the Holy, Doctor and Teacher of the Church that we celebrate today; Saint Teresa of Jesus is one of those people who illuminates ours with her life, who teaches us the value of humility on the way to the Father.

Indeed, a docile heart conveys the love of God when he acts with charity and compassion and communicates the Gospel message. True religion manifests itself in love, service and help to others. Our charities are a good reflection of authentic religion when we do them especially for the glory of God and without expecting retribution.
