Lc 17, 11-19

GospelLK 17:11-19
As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem,
he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.
As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him.
They stood at a distance from him and raised their voice, saying,
"Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!"
And when he saw them, he said,
"Go show yourselves to the priests."
As they were going they were cleansed.
And one of them, realizing he had been healed,
returned, glorifying God in a loud voice;
and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.
He was a Samaritan.
Jesus said in reply,
"Ten were cleansed, were they not?
Where are the other nine?
Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?"
Then he said to him, "Stand up and go;
your faith has saved you."

Meditacion:
Amen

A couple of days ago I had a very interesting conversation with someone about a Greek word, metanoia, and how it had been very poorly translated in the bible as "repentance" when in reality it is "change of mind" or "transformation."
Reading this gospel (which gives for many different reflections) these ten lepers and their "metanoia" came to mind as they were on their way to see the priests.
Interestingly, they did not ask to be cured ... any of us with a serious health problem and that would take us away from our community and family, we would have certainly done that.
But they asked for mercy "have compassion on us".
And nothing happened, Jesus just told them to go to the priests ... along the way their "metanoia", their change, their transformation happened.
I believe that each one of us is those lepers, walking with life with our problems and sins, looking for divine compassion as blind. And not because we are sad or apart in our society but because society has all lost the ability to recognize the true spiritual path, covered between so much technology, work, relationships and so on, we don't give ourselves time for the silence of prayer, of reunion with Christ in the tabernacle or in communion.
We are not on our way to transform ourselves.
If we put the same effort into transforming ourselves into more spiritual people, our path to the divine Jerusalem would be richer in experiences, in knowledge and in service.
And in the last part of the gospel there is a hidden message for everyone .. the only one who becomes is the only one who had no interest in visiting the temple or the priests because he was not a Jew, he was a Samaritan but this man recognized the steps of evangelization:
.- I hear the Word of God
.- He was cured, believed in that Word and transformed
.- He immediately thanked Jesus again for his healing.
Notice something, here there is no formal Church present, there is no Parish, there is no priest other than the one they were sent to certify that they were healthy; the Church appears "after" the miracle.
And if we do not begin this profound transformation for ourselves, it is useless to pretend that the Church does it for us.
The road is individual my friends.
God bless you. Amen
