Mc 3, 13-19

En aquel tiempo, Jesús subió al monte, llamó a los que él quiso, y ellos lo siguieron. Constituyó a doce para que se quedaran con él, para mandarlos a predicar y para que tuvieran el poder de expulsar a los demonios.

Constituyó entonces a los Doce: a Simón, al cual le impuso el nombre de Pedro; después, a Santiago y a Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, a quienes dio el nombre de Boanergues, es decir “hijos del trueno”; a Andrés, Felipe, Bartolomé, Mateo, Tomás, Santiago el de Alfeo, Tadeo, Simón el Cananeo y a Judas Iscariote, que después lo traicionó.

Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted
and they came to him.
He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles,
that they might be with him
and he might send them forth to preach
and to have authority to drive out demons:
He appointed the Twelve:
Simon, whom he named Peter;
James, son of Zebedee,
and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges,
that is, sons of thunder;
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus;
Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean,
and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

Meditacion:

Leyendo el Evangelio, vemos que aquellos que el Señor escogió como colaboradores no parecían ser el grupo más idóneo para empezar su ministerio: unos lo negaron, otros dudaron de él o lo traicionaron y no lo comprendieron. Con todo, la Escritura dice que Jesús “llamó a los que él quiso” y eligió de entre ellos a doce para que fueran sus discípulos y apóstoles, lo acompañaran y más tarde salieran a anunciar el mensaje de la salvación.

Los nuevos apóstoles no entendieron inmediatamente las razones por las cuales el Señor había decidido llamarlos a ellos y no a otros, pero él les dio instrucciones y reiterados ejemplos durante su apostolado terrenal; con todo, ellos siguieron sin comprender hasta que recibieron el Espíritu Santo, en el día de Pentecostés.

Esto que les sucedió a los Doce Apóstoles nos sucede también a los creyentes de hoy. Jesús nos llama a cada uno para que lo acompañemos y nos envía tal como los envió a ellos. El llamado no es para unos pocos escogidos, sino para todos. Si usted se siente reacio a hacerse seguidor del Señor porque no logra comprender el llamado o no se siente apto para realizar la misión, lo mismo les sucedió a los apóstoles. Efectivamente, hace falta tiempo, trabajo y la gracia de Dios, pero ellos, con una sola excepción, permanecieron fieles a Cristo.

Dios no quiere que nos desalentemos ni que nos sintamos culpables por las debilidades o las imperfecciones que tengamos. Todavía somos peregrinos en la tierra, una obra no acabada. Esto significa que, si somos diligentes, Dios nos dará todo lo necesario para salir adelante, como lo hizo con los Doce. Jesús no quiere que seamos meros “observadores” de su ministerio, sino que desempeñemos una función vital en su trabajo.

Es importante acompañar a Jesús en la oración y en la Misa, pero también es importante salir a construir el Reino llevando el mensaje de la salvación y ayudando a los necesitados. Aceptemos pues el llamado a ser seguidores de Cristo y permitamos que su gracia nos transforme, para que lleguemos a ser una bendición para los demás, como Dios quiere que seamos.

“Padre eterno, te ruego que me concedas la fortaleza del Espíritu Santo y la gracia de ser un buen discípulo.”

Reading the Gospel, we see that those whom the Lord chose as collaborators did not seem to be the most suitable group to begin his ministry: some denied him, others doubted him or betrayed him and did not understand him. Yet, the Scripture says that Jesus "called those he wanted" and chose twelve among them to be his disciples and apostles, to accompany him and later go out to announce the message of salvation.

The new apostles did not immediately understand the reasons why the Lord had decided to call them and not others, but he gave them instructions and repeated examples during his earthly apostolate; yet, they still did not understand until they received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.

What happened to the Twelve Apostles also happens to today's believers. Jesus calls each of us to accompany him and sends us as he sent them. The call is not for a select few, but for everyone. If you feel reluctant to become a follower of the Lord because you fail to understand the call or do not feel fit to carry out the mission, the same happened to the apostles. Indeed, it takes time, work and the grace of God, but they, with only one exception, remained faithful to Christ.

God does not want us to be discouraged or to feel guilty for the weaknesses or imperfections we have. We are still pilgrims on earth, an unfinished work. This means that, if we are diligent, God will give us everything necessary to get ahead, as he did with the Twelve. Jesus does not want us to be mere "observers" of his ministry, but to play a vital role in his work.

It is important to accompany Jesus in prayer and at Mass, but it is also important to go out to build the Kingdom carrying the message of salvation and helping those in need. Let us then accept the call to be followers of Christ and let his grace transform us, so that we may become a blessing to others, as God wants us to be.

"Eternal Father, I beg you to grant me the strength of the Holy Spirit and the grace of being a good disciple."
