Mt 23, 1-12

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a las multitudes y a sus discípulos:
“En la cátedra de Moisés se han sentado los escribas y fariseos. Hagan, pues, todo lo que les digan, pero no imiten sus obras, porque dicen una cosa y hacen otra. Hacen fardos muy pesados y difíciles de llevar y los echan sobre las espaldas de los hombres, pero ellos ni con el dedo los quieren mover. Todo lo hacen para que los vea la gente. Ensanchan las filacterias y las franjas del manto; les agrada ocupar los primeros lugares en los banquetes y los asientos de honor en las sinagogas; les gusta que los saluden en las plazas y que la gente los llame ‘maestros’.

Ustedes, en cambio, no dejen que los llamen ‘maestros’, porque no tienen más que un Maestro y todos ustedes son hermanos. A ningún hombre sobre la tierra lo llamen ‘padre’, porque el Padre de ustedes es sólo el Padre celestial. No se dejen llamar ‘guías’, porque el guía de ustedes es solamente Cristo. Que el mayor de entre ustedes sea su servidor, porque el que se enaltece será humillado y el que se humilla será enaltecido”.

Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,
“The scribes and the Pharisees
have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.
Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,
but do not follow their example.
For they preach but they do not practice.
They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry
and lay them on people’s shoulders,
but they will not lift a finger to move them.
All their works are performed to be seen.
They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,
greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’
As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’
You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.
Call no one on earth your father;
you have but one Father in heaven.
Do not be called ‘Master’;
you have but one master, the Christ.
The greatest among you must be your servant.
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled;
but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

Meditacion:

Cuando se redactó este evangelio existía una fuerte polémica entre la comunidad de los cristianos y el grupo de los fariseos. Esto hizo que aparecieran en el texto unos avisos que van más allá de las circunstancias históricas. Estos avisos nos vienen también hoy como anillo al dedo. La autocrítica siempre es un desafío; sin querer queriendo solemos dejar en el tintero lo que más nos molesta.

Así podemos preguntarnos también ahora:

Los letrados y los fariseos no hacen lo que dicen, ¿y nosotros?

Cargan fardos pesados a la espalda de los demás, ¿y nosotros?

Todo lo hacen para llamar la atención y que los alaben, ¿y nosotros?

Les gusta ocupar los primeros puestos, ¿y nosotros?

Usan los títulos de maestro y padre para estar por encima de los demás, ¿y nosotros?

Dice el salmo: ¿Por qué recitas mis preceptos… y te echas a la espalda mis mandatos?

Para acercarnos a Dios en esta Cuaresma el profeta nos ha dicho en la primera lectura: “aprended a obrar bien, buscad la justicia, defended al oprimido, sed abogados del huérfano, defensores de la viuda”. Aquí está el camino que nos lleva hasta la verdad de Dios.

“El que sirve y ayuda a los pobres nunca se equivoca en el camino de Dios”, decía con mucha convicción una anciana que ha vivido los duros años de la emigración, cuando los españoles tenían que salir hacia Europa para buscar un futuro. Aquí vivió en carne propia la palabra de Jesús “no sólo de pan vive el hombre”. Su gran corazón y su caridad cristiana le hizo descubrir y ayudar a muchos compatriotas metidos en graves problemas de salud y de abandono.

When this gospel was written there was a strong controversy between the Christian community and the group of the Pharisees. This led to the appearance of ads in the text that go beyond historical circumstances. These notices also come today as a ring to the finger. The lawyers and the Pharisees do not do what they say, and we?

They carry heavy bales on the backs of others, and we?

They do everything to get attention and praise them, and we?

They like to occupy the first positions, and we?

They use the titles of teacher and father to be above others, and we?

The psalm says: Why do you recite my precepts ... and lay my mandates behind your back?

To get closer to God in this Lent, the prophet has told us in the first reading: "Learn to work well, seek justice, defend the oppressed, be orphaned lawyers, advocates of the widow." Here is the path that leads us to the truth of God.

"He who serves and helps the poor is never wrong in the way of God," said an old woman who has lived through the hard years of emigration, when the Spaniards had to leave for Europe to seek a future. Here the word of Jesus lived in his own flesh "man does not live by bread alone." His great heart and Christian charity made him discover and help many compatriots in serious health and neglect problems.
