Jn 8, 31-42

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los que habían creído en él: “Si se mantienen fieles a mi palabra, serán verdaderamente discípulos míos, conocerán la verdad y la verdad los hará libres”. Ellos replicaron: “Somos hijos de Abraham y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo dices tú: ‘Serán libres’?”

Jesús les contestó: “Yo les aseguro que todo el que peca es un esclavo del pecado y el esclavo no se queda en la casa para siempre; el hijo sí se queda para siempre. Si el Hijo les da la libertad, serán realmente libres. Ya sé que son hijos de Abraham; sin embargo, tratan de matarme, porque no aceptan mis palabras. Yo hablo de lo que he visto en casa de mi Padre: ustedes hacen lo que han oído en casa de su padre”.

Ellos le respondieron: “Nuestro padre es Abraham”. Jesús les dijo: “Si fueran hijos de Abraham, harían las obras de Abraham. Pero tratan de matarme a mí, porque les he dicho la verdad que oí de Dios. Eso no lo hizo Abraham. Ustedes hacen las obras de su padre”. Le respondieron: “Nosotros no somos hijos de prostitución. No tenemos más padre que a Dios”.

Jesús les dijo entonces: “Si Dios fuera su Padre me amarían a mí, porque yo salí de Dios y vengo de Dios; no he venido por mi cuenta, sino enviado por él”.

Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him,
“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham
and have never been enslaved to anyone.
How can you say, ‘You will become free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
A slave does not remain in a household forever,
but a son always remains.
So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free.
I know that you are descendants of Abraham.
But you are trying to kill me,
because my word has no room among you.
I tell you what I have seen in the Father’s presence;
then do what you have heard from the Father.”

They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.”
Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children,
you would be doing the works of Abraham.
But now you are trying to kill me,
a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God;
Abraham did not do this.
You are doing the works of your father!”
So they said to him, “We were not born of fornication.
We have one Father, God.”
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,
for I came from God and am here;
I did not come on my own, but he sent me.”

Meditacion:

Cuando Jesús les echaba en cara a los jefes religiosos que lo rechazaban, ellos se justificaban alegando: “Nuestro padre es Abraham. . .” suponiendo que solo por ser hijos de Abraham, ellos y todos los judíos eran hijos de Dios, pero el Señor les respondió con un sí calificado: “Ya sé que son hijos de Abraham; sin embargo, tratan de matarme.” Es decir, había una gran contradicción entre lo que ellos decían ser y lo que hacían en la práctica.

En efecto, ser hijo de Dios no es únicamente cuestión de antepasados. Jesús les decía a los jefes judíos que si realmente fueran hijos de Abraham demostrarían creer en él; es decir, al rechazar a Cristo, dejaba al descubierto que no pensaban ni actuaban como supuestamente lo harían los descendientes de Abraham.

Para nosotros, la lección es clara. Podemos haber crecido en una familia católica, pero no por el solo hecho de ser hijos de padres católicos vamos a ser fieles devotos de Jesucristo. Alguien decía que Dios tiene hijos, pero no nietos. Es decir, cada uno personalmente tiene que asumir la responsabilidad de su propia conversión y su propia salvación. Obviamente es más fácil cuando uno ha crecido en un ambiente cristiano, donde la familia va a Misa y hace oraciones a Jesucristo y a la Virgen María. Pero mientras uno no se haga un examen profundo y sincero de sus actos y conceptos y se entregue de corazón al Señor, toda esa crianza puede ir quedando por el camino.

Es preciso, pues, cumplir las promesas del Bautismo y la Confirmación como hijos de Dios y soldados de Cristo, pero hacerlo no por obediencia al mandamiento, sino por amor a Jesús, que nos amó hasta el extremo de dar su vida por cada uno de nosotros. Vayamos, pues, a recibirlo con gratitud y amor en la Sagrada Eucaristía y adorarlo en el Santísimo. El amor hay que expresarlo con palabras, pero también con acciones y el Señor está esperando diariamente a que pasemos a visitarlo en la iglesia, y también nos espera en lo íntimo del corazón, para que entablemos con su Persona el dulce diálogo de la oración.

“Padre eterno, pongo toda mi vida en tus manos como hijo tuyo. Cámbiame, Señor, para que yo aprenda a hacer aquello que hacen tus hijos fieles.” Amen

When Jesus reproached the religious leaders who rejected him, they justified themselves claiming: “Our father is Abraham. . . " supposing that just because they were children of Abraham, they and all the Jews were children of God, but the Lord answered them with a qualified yes: “I know that they are children of Abraham; however, they try to kill me. ” In other words, there was a great contradiction between what they claimed to be and what they did in practice.

Indeed, being a child of God is not only a matter of ancestors. Jesus told the Jewish chiefs that if they really were children of Abraham they would demonstrate belief in him; that is, by rejecting Christ, he revealed that they did not think or act as Abraham's descendants supposedly would.

For us, the lesson is clear. We may have grown up in a Catholic family, but we are not faithful devotees of Jesus Christ just because we are children of Catholic parents. Someone said that God has children, but not grandchildren. That is, each one personally has to take responsibility for his own conversion and his own salvation. Obviously it is easier when one has grown up in a Christian environment, where the family goes to Mass and prays to Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. But as long as one does not make a deep and sincere examination of his acts and concepts and give himself wholeheartedly to the Lord, all that upbringing may be left on the road.

It is necessary, therefore, to fulfill the promises of Baptism and Confirmation as children of God and soldiers of Christ, but to do it not out of obedience to the commandment, but out of love for Jesus, who loved us to the point of giving his life for each of us. we. Let us go, then, to receive him with gratitude and love in the Holy Eucharist and adore him in the Blessed Sacrament. Love must be expressed in words, but also in actions, and the Lord is waiting daily for us to come to visit him in the church, and he also awaits us in the depths of our hearts, so that we can enter into the sweet dialogue of prayer with his Person.

“Eternal Father, I place my whole life in your hands as your son. Change me, Lord, so that I can learn to do what your faithful children do. ” Amen
