GospelJN 16:29-33
The disciples said to Jesus,
“Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.
Now we realize that you know everything
and that you do not need to have anyone question you.
Because of this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?
Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived
when each of you will be scattered to his own home
and you will leave me alone.
But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

Meditacion:

We began a few intense days of preparation for the great event of Pentecost, passing yesterday before the Ascension, as the moment when the presence of Jesus among his own people comes to an end, to begin to be present in another way: by his Spirit. We will do it by the hand of the priestly discourse / prayer of Jesus. All a prayerful meditation on the work of Jesus and its implications, both for himself and for his disciples, who will continue it.
We are not used to meeting a Jesus praying for his disciples. It would be good to visualize it, imagine it, meditate on this Jesus in prayer for us. A prayer that must be very powerful, taking into account who utters it, to whom it is addressed and what it prays for us. It is important to keep in mind that it is a prayer "for the disciples", for the group as such, which will shape the future Christian community, the Church. They are not yet Church, because they lack precisely the "gift of Unity and Love", the Spirit. But that is the interest of Jesus in praying: the community brotherhood of his followers. And keeping this in mind means that we review, delve deeper, make our place and our mission concrete in that large Community that is the Church, and the smaller communities where we live our faith every day.
It is very appropriate that we intensify our personal prayer, asking for that Spirit, or better, preparing ourselves to receive that Spirit that God never denies to those who ask Him (Gospel of Matthew). We can do it with the help of the "Pentecost Sequence", which is not difficult to find online if you don't have it at hand. And to do it from the hand of Mary, the woman of the Spirit, the one who knows so much to welcome him with docility, and who accompanies the disciples always and particularly in this very special time.
As for today's Gospel, I want to pay attention to what Jesus says: "You will leave me alone."
It is a hard experience in which, in the hardest moments (loneliness, illness, work or apostolic difficulties, failures, ruptures ...) those from whom you most expect and need closeness and support ... they play it, they fail you , they move away from you: your friends, your family, your community, your partner ... "are not" or are even against it. The maturity and strength of relationships is verified and demonstrated precisely at those moments. It was hard for Jesus, as it is hard for anyone. It's easy to sink, throw in the towel ...
However, Jesus counts on it and also does not withdraw their trust. And pray for them. Scattering each on his own side worries him. The dispersion, the lack of unity, the flight, leaving him alone. And also to allow ourselves to be overcome by «the world». Temptations that are ours, and in which we will surely fail. Still, the Lord wants to keep counting on us.
"But I am not alone, because the Father is with me." Precious the confidence and teaching of Jesus. Faced with the experience of failure, darkness and loneliness, when faith is put to the test, faith must become trust: what we so often find in Scripture: the Lord is my strength, my God I trust in you, although all abandon me .., and many others. It is time to repeat with Saint Paul "I know who I have trusted." Yes, the "world" of which Jesus speaks and the struggles in which we are involved (economic interests, image, power and positions, the lack of courage to fight for justice, the complicit silence, fear, avoidance the complications and risks ...) seem to overcome us, and not infrequently overcome us. It is opportune that we cling to our Father, even if his presence is hidden and discreet, even though it seems to us that he is "not there." It is opportune that we pray these words, that we let them sink into the bottom of our hearts ... because only then can we win, like Jesus: «And you will find peace in me». So be it. Amen
