Permanecer en el amor

Jn 15, 9-17

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Como el Padre me ama, así los amo yo. Permanezcan en mi amor. Si cumplen mis mandamientos, permanecen en mi amor; lo mismo que yo cumplo los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanezco en su amor. Les he dicho esto para que mi alegría esté en ustedes y su alegría sea plena.

Este es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado. Nadie tiene amor más grande a sus amigos, que el que da la vida por ellos. Ustedes son mis amigos, si hacen lo que yo les mando. Ya no los llamo siervos, porque el siervo no sabe lo que hace su amo; a ustedes los llamo amigos, porque les he dado a conocer todo lo que le he oído a mi Padre.

No son ustedes los que me han elegido, soy yo quien los ha elegido y los ha destinado para que vayan y den fruto y su fruto permanezca, de modo que el Padre les conceda cuanto le pidan en mi nombre. Esto es lo que les mando: que se amen los unos a los otros’’.

“As the Father loves me, so I also love you.
Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commandments
and remain in his love.

“I have told you this so that my joy might be in you
and your joy might be complete.
This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.
I have called you friends,
because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you:  love one another.”

Meditacion:

Estas palabras de Jesús, que leemos en el Evangelio de hoy, están dirigidas a sus apóstoles, pero nos llegan también a nosotros. Todos estamos llamados a ser discípulos, a seguirlo y aprender a dar mucho fruto y amar al prójimo. La llamada proviene del amor del Padre y solo podemos responder si permanecemos en ese amor y permanecemos en él cuando obedecemos el mandato del Señor: “Que se amen unos a otros como yo los he amado” y así aprendemos lo que nos enseña el Padre; pero no podemos amar al prójimo si no experimentamos personalmente el amor de Dios ni conocemos la realidad de ser amados por Dios.

Esta enseñanza la recibimos permaneciendo en el Señor, especialmente defendiéndolo en nosotros mismos contra los engaños de nuestra propia vida. La experiencia del mundo tiende a contradecir la verdad de que Dios nos ama y nos cuida y que tiene todo el poder necesario para mantenernos en el centro de su voluntad. Dado que fuimos escogidos por Cristo y destinados, como discípulos suyos, a dar mucho fruto y que ese fruto permanezca, no podemos dar fruto duradero ni ser discípulos auténticos si no permanecemos en él.

San Matías, cuya fiesta celebramos hoy, nos sirve de ejemplo. No se sabe mucho acerca de él, salvo que fue escogido para reemplazar a Judas Iscariote, el que traicionó a Jesús (Hechos 1, 15-26). Matías recibió las enseñanzas de Cristo y persistió en ellas, dando fruto para Dios, aun cuando haya permanecido en gran parte “desconocido”. Como discípulo anónimo, él nos señala el camino, porque la mayoría vivimos en el anonimato. Si respondemos a la invitación de Jesús a ser sus discípulos y permanecemos en el amor de Dios y aprendemos de él lo que es el amor y cómo hemos de amarnos los unos a los otros, podemos dar fruto en la familia y en el trabajo, aunque tal fruto no sea objeto de gran atención para los demás, pero sí lo es para el Señor, pues él mismo nos ha escogido para dar fruto en las circunstancias de la vida cotidiana.

“Santo Espíritu de Dios, concédeme, te ruego, la gracia de conocer su insondable amor y permanecer en él, y amar al prójimo con tu mismo amor.” Amen

These words of Jesus, which we read in today's Gospel, are addressed to his apostles, but they also reach us. We are all called to be disciples, to follow him and learn to bear much fruit and love our neighbor. The call comes from the love of the Father and we can only respond if we remain in that love and remain in it when we obey the Lord's command: "Love one another as I have loved you" and thus learn what the Father teaches us; But we cannot love our neighbor if we do not personally experience the love of God or know the reality of being loved by God.

We receive this teaching by abiding in the Lord, especially defending ourselves in ourselves against the deceptions of our own lives. The experience of the world tends to contradict the truth that God loves and cares for us and that he has all the power necessary to keep us at the center of his will. Since we were chosen by Christ and destined, as his disciples, to bear much fruit and that fruit remains, we cannot bear lasting fruit or be authentic disciples if we do not abide in him.

Saint Matthias, whose feast we celebrate today, serves as an example. Not much is known about him except that he was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Jesus (Acts 1, 15-26). Matthias received the teachings of Christ and persisted in them, bearing fruit for God, even though he has remained largely "unknown." As an anonymous disciple, he shows us the way, because most of us live anonymously. If we respond to Jesus' invitation to be his disciples and remain in the love of God and learn from him what love is and how we are to love one another, we can bear fruit in the family and in work, even though Such fruit is not the object of great attention for others, but it is for the Lord, since he himself has chosen us to bear fruit in the circumstances of daily life.

"Holy Spirit of God, grant me, I beg you, the grace to know his unfathomable love and remain in it, and love your neighbor with your own love." Amen
