La viuda

Mc 12, 38-44

En aquel tiempo, enseñaba Jesús a la multitud y le decía: “¡Cuidado con los escribas! Les encanta pasearse con amplios ropajes y recibir reverencias en las calles; buscan los asientos de honor en las sinagogas y los primeros puestos en los banquetes; se echan sobre los bienes de las viudas haciendo ostentación de largos rezos. Estos recibirán un castigo muy riguroso”.

En una ocasión Jesús estaba sentado frente a las alcancías del templo, mirando cómo la gente echaba allí sus monedas. Muchos ricos daban en abundancia. En esto, se acercó una viuda pobre y echó dos moneditas de muy poco valor. Llamando entonces a sus discípulos, Jesús les dijo: “Yo les aseguro que esa pobre viuda ha echado en la alcancía más que todos. Porque los demás han echado de lo que les sobraba; pero ésta, en su pobreza ha echado todo lo que tenía para vivir”.

In the course of his teaching Jesus said,
“Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes
and accept greetings in the marketplaces,
seats of honor in synagogues,
and places of honor at banquets.
They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext,
recite lengthy prayers.
They will receive a very severe condemnation.”

He sat down opposite the treasury
and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.
Many rich people put in large sums.
A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,
“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
her whole livelihood.”

Meditacion:

En el Israel antiguo, las viudas (especialmente las que quedaban sin hijos) solían ser víctimas del desamparo y quedaban condenadas a una vida de absoluta pobreza. De hecho, la viuda del Evangelio de hoy echó en la alcancía del templo todo lo que tenía: dos moneditas de poco valor. Jesús les enseñó a sus discípulos que a pesar de ser una pequeña ofrenda, era mucho más valiosa que las de otras personas, pues ella había echado “todo lo que tenía para vivir.”

Jesús contrastó el desprendimiento de esta viuda con el egoísmo y la prepotencia de los fariseos. Éstos solamente se preocupaban de los honores y las riquezas del mundo. La mujer, en cambio, fue capaz de dar todo lo que tenía, porque valoraba los bienes de Dios por encima de los bienes de este mundo, siendo así un ejemplo de la actitud que Jesús había presentado en el Sermón de la Montaña: “Más bien acumulen tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni el moho los destruyen… porque donde está tu tesoro, ahí también está tu corazón” (Mateo 6, 20-21).

Solo es posible tener semejante espíritu de desprendimiento mediante una transformación interior forjada por Dios mediante la fe. Como lo dijo san Pablo: “No se dejen transformar por los criterios de este mundo; sino dejen que una nueva manera de pensar los transforme internamente, para que sepan distinguir cuál es la voluntad de Dios, es decir, lo que es bueno, lo que le agrada, lo perfecto” (Romanos 12, 2). La viuda fue capaz de hacer este gran sacrificio, porque el amor de Dios le había transformado el corazón y la mente.

El Señor promete recompensar la generosidad que brota de la fe: “Y el que suministra semilla al sembrador y pan para su alimento, suplirá y multiplicará la siembra de ustedes y aumentará la cosecha de su justicia. Ustedes serán enriquecidos en todo para toda liberalidad, la cual por medio de nosotros produce acción de gracias a Dios” (2 Corintios 9, 10).

“Amado Señor, concédeme una fe firme que me capacite para ser generoso con el tiempo y los bienes materiales que tú mismo me has dado, a fin de compartirlos con los necesitados y contribuir así a la edificación del Cuerpo Místico de Cristo, es decir la Iglesia.” Amen

In ancient Israel, widows (especially those who were childless) used to be victims of helplessness and were condemned to a life of absolute poverty. In fact, the widow of today's Gospel threw everything she had into the piggy bank of the temple: two little coins of little value. Jesus taught his disciples that despite being a small offering, it was much more valuable than other people's, since she had thrown "everything she had to live on."

Jesus contrasted this widow's detachment with the selfishness and arrogance of the Pharisees. These only concerned themselves with the honors and riches of the world. The woman, on the other hand, was able to give everything she had, because she valued the goods of God over the goods of this world, thus being an example of the attitude that Jesus had presented in the Sermon on the Mount: “More well accumulate treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor mold destroy them… because where your treasure is, there also is your heart ”(Matthew 6, 20-21).

It is only possible to have such a spirit of detachment through an interior transformation forged by God through faith. As Saint Paul said: “Do not be transformed by the criteria of this world; but let a new way of thinking transform you internally, so that you know how to distinguish what is God's will, that is, what is good, what pleases him, what is perfect ”(Romans 12, 2). The widow was able to make this great sacrifice, because the love of God had transformed her heart and mind.

The Lord promises to reward the generosity that springs from faith: “And he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for his food will supply and multiply your sowing and increase the harvest of his righteousness. You will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us produces thanksgiving to God ”(2 Corinthians 9, 10).

"Beloved Lord, grant me a firm faith that enables me to be generous with time and the material goods that you yourself have given me, in order to share them with those in need and thus contribute to the edification of the Mystical Body of Christ, that is, the Church." Amen
