En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “No piensen que he venido a traer la paz a la tierra; no he venido a traer la paz, sino la guerra. He venido a enfrentar al hijo con su padre, a la hija con su madre, a la nuera con su suegra; y los enemigos de cada uno serán los de su propia familia.
El que ama a su padre o a su madre más que a mí, no es digno de mí; el que ama a su hijo o a su hija más que a mí, no es digno de mí; y el que no toma su cruz y me sigue, no es digno de mí.
El que salve su vida, la perderá y el que la pierda por mí, la salvará.
Quien los recibe a ustedes, me recibe a mí; y quien me recibe a mí, recibe al que me ha enviado.
El que recibe a un profeta por ser profeta, recibirá recompensa de profeta; el que recibe a un justo por ser justo, recibirá recompensa de justo.
Quien diere, aunque no sea más que un vaso de agua fría a uno de estos pequeños, por ser discípulo mío, yo les aseguro que no perderá su recompensa’’.
Cuando acabó de dar instrucciones a sus doce discípulos, Jesús partió de ahí para enseñar y predicar en otras ciudades.

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth.
I have come to bring not peace but the sword.
For I have come to set
a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and one’s enemies will be those of his household.

“Whoever receives you receives me,

Meditacion:
Las relaciones familiares posiblemente son las más importantes e influyentes que tenemos. En Israel, en el tiempo de Jesús, esto era incluso más patente que ahora. Esa es la razón por la cual las palabras del Señor Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy eran especialmente difíciles de aceptar para sus oyentes: ¿Tenían que cortar los lazos familiares por el bien el Evangelio? ¿Pretendía realmente Cristo que sus discípulos hicieran esto?
Bueno, no precisamente. El Señor estaba utilizando una exageración: Nuestra relación con el Señor debe ser la relación más importante de nuestra vida. Recordemos que el primer mandamiento es amar a Dios con todo el corazón, con toda el alma, con toda tu mente y fuerzas; y luego al prójimo. Por eso ninguna otra relación, ni siquiera con los familiares más cercanos, debe ser más importante que con él. Esto, por supuesto, no significa que dejemos de amar a nuestros familiares ni a nadie más. Simplemente nos está pidiendo que pongamos en orden nuestras prioridades y que él sea el que pongamos en primer lugar, por sobre todo en nuestro corazón.
La mayoría de las personas se preocupan por lo que piensan de ellos sus familiares y cómo pueden complacer a sus padres o sus hijos, y eso está bien. Sin embargo, a veces dejamos que estas preocupaciones familiares anulen o desplacen nuestra relación con Jesús, las cuales pueden llegar a dominarnos tanto que, en la práctica, nos desentendamos del Señor Jesús y tratemos de agradar a nuestros familiares más que a él. Cuando esto sucede, caemos en la trampa de buscar satisfacción personal y capacidad de amar a nuestros familiares en fuentes incorrectas.
Poner al Señor en primer lugar resultará ser la decisión más sabia en nuestras amistades con otras personas, y especialmente en nuestra familia. De hecho, tener una sólida conexión de amor con Jesucristo puede mejorar la relación que tengamos con otras personas. ¿Por qué? Porque entre mayor cercanía tengamos con el Señor, más pacíficos, compasivos y generosos seremos. Su amor suaviza las asperezas del corazón y nos ayuda a amar a nuestros seres queridos tal como él los ama a ellos. Y estos son siempre los principales ingredientes de una relación sana y cariñosa.

Family relationships are possibly the most important and influential we have. In Israel, in the time of Jesus, this was even more apparent than now. That is why the words of the Lord Jesus in today's Gospel were especially difficult for his listeners to accept: Did they have to sever family ties for the sake of the Gospel? Did Christ really want his disciples to do this?
Well, not exactly. The Lord was using an exaggeration: Our relationship with the Lord must be the most important relationship in our life. Let us remember that the first commandment is to love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and strength; and then the neighbor. So no other relationship, even with close family members, should be more important than with him. This, of course, does not mean that we stop loving our family or anyone else. He is simply asking us to put our priorities in order and that he is the one that we put first, above all in our hearts.
Most people worry about what their family members think of them and how they can please their parents or children, and that's fine. However, sometimes we allow these family concerns to nullify or displace our relationship with Jesus, which can dominate us so much that, in practice, we disregard the Lord Jesus and try to please our relatives more than him. When this happens, we fall into the trap of seeking personal satisfaction and the ability to love our relatives from the wrong sources.
Putting the Lord first will prove to be the wisest choice in our friendships with other people, and especially in our family. In fact, having a strong love connection with Jesus Christ can improve our relationship with other people. Why? Because the closer we have to the Lord, the more peaceful, compassionate and generous we will be. His love smooths the harshness of the heart and helps us love our loved ones just as he loves them. And these are always the main ingredients of a healthy and loving relationship.
"Lord, help me to love you and follow you before others."
