Mt 12, 38-42
En aquel tiempo, le dijeron a Jesús algunos escribas y fariseos: “Maestro, queremos verte hacer una señal prodigiosa”. El les respondió: “Esta gente malvada e infiel está reclamando una señal, pero la única señal que se le dará, será la del profeta Jonás. Pues de la misma manera que Jonás estuvo tres días y tres noches en el vientre de la ballena, así también el Hijo del hombre estará tres días y tres noches en el seno de la tierra.
Los habitantes de Nínive se levantarán el día del juicio contra esta gente y la condenarán, porque ellos se convirtieron con la predicación de Jonás, y aquí hay alguien más grande que Jonás.
La reina del sur se levantará el día del juicio contra esta gente y la condenará, porque ella vino de los últimos rincones de la tierra a oír la sabiduría de Salomón, y aquí hay alguien más grande que Salomón’’.

Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
“Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
He said to them in reply,
“An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign,
but no sign will be given it
except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights,
so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth
three days and three nights.
At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah;
and there is something greater than Jonah here.
At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation
and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon;
and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

Meditacion:
Los letrados y fariseos que aparecen en el evangelio de hoy han inventado una frase que resiste las modas: Maestro, queremos ver un milagro tuyo. Primero reconocemos que Dios ha creado este mundo como es, con sus leyes, sus agujeros, su incertidumbre. Luego le pedimos a su Hijo que vaya resolviendo sus paradojas a base de hechos espectaculares.
Lo que los fariseos piden a Jesús es exactamente lo que el diablo le pide en el relato de las tentaciones: ser un mesías espectacular, deslumbrante, hacer todo aquello que es del agrado de los millones de “fans” que esperamos demostraciones palpables de su poder.
Esta tentación es de Jesús y de todos sus seguidores. La respuesta es desconcertante: (A esta generación) no se le dará más signo que el del profeta Jonás. El “signo” es un Mesías escondido durante tres días en el seno de la tierra/ballena. El signo es, una vez más, el misterio de la Pascua: dejarse “derrotar” por la muerte para hacerla estallar desde dentro.
Es llamativa también la insistencia en el hay uno que es más. Jesús es más que Jonás (profeta) y es más que Salomón (rey). Este es más señala su carácter definitivo. En él se cumple toda profecía y se realiza todo reinado. No tenemos que esperar a nadie más.

The lawyers and Pharisees who appear in today's Gospel have invented a phrase that resists fashions: Master, we want to see a miracle of yours. What the Pharisees ask Jesus is exactly what the devil asks of him in the story of the temptations: to be a spectacular, dazzling messiah, to do everything that is liked by the millions of "fans" who await tangible demonstrations of his power .
This temptation is from Jesus and all his followers. The answer is puzzling: (This generation) will be given no other sign than that of the prophet Jonah. The "sign" is a Messiah hidden for three days in the bosom of the earth / whale. The sign is, once again, the mystery of Easter: allowing oneself to be “defeated” by death in order to be exploded from within.
Also striking is the insistence that there is one that is more. Jesus is more than Jonah (prophet) and is more than Solomon (king). This is more indicative of its definitive nature. In him all prophecy is fulfilled and all reign is realized. We don't have to wait for anyone else.
