Un Jesus utilitarista

Mt 9, 1-8

En aquel tiempo, Jesús subió de nuevo a la barca, pasó a la otra orilla del lago y llegó a Cafarnaúm, su ciudad.

En esto, trajeron a donde él estaba a un paralítico postrado en una camilla. Viendo Jesús la fe de aquellos hombres, le dijo al paralítico: “Ten confianza, hijo. Se te perdonan tus pecados”.

Al oír esto, algunos escribas pensaron: “Este hombre está blasfemando”. Pero Jesús, conociendo sus pensamientos, les dijo: “¿Por qué piensan mal en sus corazones? ¿Qué es más fácil: decir ‘Se te perdonan tus pecados’, o decir ‘Levántate y anda’? Pues para que sepan que el Hijo del hombre tiene poder en la tierra para perdonar los pecados, –le dijo entonces al paralítico–: Levántate, toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa”.

El se levantó y se fue a su casa. Al ver esto, la gente se llenó de temor y glorificó a Dios, que había dado tanto poder a los hombres.

GospelMT 9:1-8

After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town.
And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
“Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.”
At that, some of the scribes said to themselves,
“This man is blaspheming.”
Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
“Why do you harbor evil thoughts?
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’
or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins”–
he then said to the paralytic,
“Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
He rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe
and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

Meditacion:

En el Evangelio de hoy pasa algo bastante comun en nuestros dias con Jesús. La gente que rodea a Jesús sabe bien lo que quiere. Quieren curaciones que les faciliten la vida. Y basta. Eso de que venga Jesús diciendo que perdona los pecados, les transtorna su forma de pensar. En su esquema mental eso solo lo puede hacer Dios. Y no quieren cambio ninguno sobre ese tema. Eso que no se lo toquen. Pero un milagrero que cure sus cojeras, cegueras y enfermedades varias, eso les viene bien. Eso están dispuestos a aceptarlo. Pero nada más. Un Dios utilitarista a nuestro servicio.

Termina el evangelio diciendo que la gente quedó sobrecogida y alababa a Dios, que da a los hombres tal potestad. No sabemos si se refiere a la potestad de hacer andar al paralítico o a la de perdonar los pecados. La realidad es que a Jesús lo terminaron matando. Como a lo largo de la historia hemos matado a tantos profetas. Matando o desterrando o alejando. Cualquier cosa antes que escuchar lo que no nos gusta oír, lo que nos cambia nuestros prejuicios, lo que es de sentido común, lo que nos saca de nuestra zona de comfort.

Porque de sentido común  es que Dios perdona los pecados y acoge y reconcilia. Porque el que es Amor no puede hacer otra cosa que amar. Por mucho que a nosotros nos guste que entre sus funciones, entre las funciones de Dios, estén las de condenar y castigar. Jesús, el gran profeta, el hijo del Hombre, el enviado de Dios no puede hacer otra cosa que perdonar, acoger, amar, reconciliar, sanar. 

Muchas veces queremos que Dios sea como nosotros creemos que es, como nosotros lo imaginamos en vez de abrirnos a la imagen de Dios que se nos muestra en Jesús. Y, por eso, terminamos matando a Jesús. Y, por eso, terminamos, también hoy en día, matando a los profetas.

"Señor mio perdona mis pecados y ayudame a abrirme al amor" Amen

In today's Gospel something quite common happens in our days with Jesus. The people around Jesus know well what they want. They want cures that make life easier for them. Enough. The fact that Jesus comes saying that he forgives sins, disrupts their way of thinking. In your mental scheme that can only be done by God. And they don't want any change on that topic. That they do not touch it. But a miracle worker who cures his lameness, blindness and various diseases, that is good for them. That they are willing to accept. But nothing else. A utilitarian God at our service.

The Gospel ends by saying that the people were overwhelmed and praised God, who gives men such power. We do not know if it refers to the power to make the paralytic walk or to forgive sins. The reality is that Jesus ended up being killed. As throughout history we have killed so many prophets. Killing or banishing or driving away. Anything before listening to what we don't like to hear, what changes our prejudices, what is common sense, what takes us out of our comfort zone.

Because it is common sense that God forgives sins and welcomes and reconciles. Because the one who is Love can do nothing but love. As much as we like that among its functions, among the functions of God, are those of condemnation and punishment. Jesus, the great prophet, the son of Man, the envoy of God can do nothing but forgive, welcome, love, reconcile, heal.

Many times we want God to be as we believe him to be, as we imagine him instead of opening ourselves to the image of God that is shown to us in Jesus. And so we ended up killing Jesus. And so we end up, even today, killing the prophets.

"Lord, forgive my sins and help me open myself to love" Amen
