Mt 23, 1-12

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a las multitudes y a sus discípulos: “En la cátedra de Moisés se han sentado los escribas y fariseos. Hagan, pues, todo lo que les digan, pero no imiten sus obras, porque dicen una cosa y hacen otra. Hacen fardos muy pesados y difíciles de llevar y los echan sobre las espaldas de los hombres, pero ellos ni con el dedo los quieren mover. Todo lo hacen para que los vea la gente. Ensanchan las filacterias y las franjas del manto; les agrada ocupar los primeros lugares en los banquetes y los asientos de honor en las sinagogas; les gusta que los saluden en las plazas y que la gente los llame “maestros”.

Ustedes, en cambio, no dejen que los llamen “maestros”, porque no tienen más que un Maestro y todos ustedes son hermanos. A ningún hombre sobre la tierra lo llamen “padre”, porque el Padre de ustedes es sólo el Padre celestial. No se dejen llamar “guías”, porque el guía de ustedes es solamente Cristo. Que el mayor de entre ustedes sea su servidor, porque el que se enaltece será humillado y el que se humilla será enaltecido”.

MT 23:1-12

Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,
“The scribes and the Pharisees
have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.
Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,
but do not follow their example.
For they preach but they do not practice.
They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry
and lay them on people’s shoulders,
but they will not lift a finger to move them.
All their works are performed to be seen.
They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,
greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’
As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’
You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.
Call no one on earth your father;
you have but one Father in heaven.
Do not be called ‘Master’;
you have but one master, the Christ.
The greatest among you must be your servant.
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled;
but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

Meditacion:

El capítulo 23 de Mateo contiene una serie de reprimendas que Jesús dirige a los fariseos, marca el punto de la tensión acumulada en el capítulo 21. En el texto litúrgico de hoy Jesús no solo se dirige a ellos, sino también a la muchedumbre y a sus discípulos, les advierte del peligro al que siempre está expuesto el Evangelio: la dicotomía entre las palabras y la obras, entre lo que se dice y lo que se hace, entre lo que se enseña y se vive.

A Jesús le duele la cerrazón del corazón y la actitud obcecada de los que se consideran los más fervorosos cumplidores de la ley. Por eso, les habla con tanta claridad y fuerza. Es un lenguaje duro. Les denuncia la hipocresía de su práctica religiosa, la interpretación aberrante de una enseñanza que es en si justa y buena, pero que se empobrece con un comportamiento orgulloso. Eso es lo que condena.

En los versículos del 8-12 Jesús pasa al «ustedes» interpelando directamente a sus discípulos, de ayer y también a nosotros hoy. Contraria a la lógica de los escribas y fariseos, en la comunidad de discípulos y misioneros de Jesús, la verdadera grandeza consiste en hacerse pequeño y la verdadera gloria es servir con humildad. La comunidad está construida sobre la base de la fraternidad y la comunión, los títulos y los honores son relativos, no es lo fundamental, solo Jesús es el «maestro» y el Padre es sólo uno, el que está en el cielo.

“Señor, haz que mi amor por ti crezca y brille en todo lo que yo diga, piense y haga.” Amen

Chapter 23 of Matthew contains a series of reprimands that Jesus addresses to the Pharisees, marking the point of tension accumulated in chapter 21. In today's liturgical text Jesus not only addresses them, but also the crowd and their disciples, he warns them of the danger to which the Gospel is always exposed: the dichotomy between words and deeds, between what is said and what is done, between what is taught and what is lived.

Jesus is hurt by the closedness of the heart and the stubborn attitude of those who consider themselves the most fervent observers of the law. That is why he speaks so clearly and forcefully to you. It is harsh language. He denounces the hypocrisy of their religious practice, the aberrational interpretation of a teaching that is in itself fair and good, but which is impoverished by a proud behavior. That is what condemns.

In verses 8-12, Jesus turns to "you", directly addressing his disciples, yesterday and also us today. Contrary to the logic of the scribes and Pharisees, in the community of disciples and missionaries of Jesus, true greatness consists in becoming small and true glory is serving with humility. The community is built on the basis of fraternity and communion, titles and honors are relative, it is not the fundamental thing, only Jesus is the "teacher" and the Father is only one, the one in heaven.
