El miedo

Mt 14, 1-12

En aquel tiempo, el rey Herodes oyó lo que contaban de Jesús y les dijo a sus cortesanos: “Es Juan el Bautista, que ha resucitado de entre los muertos y por eso actúan en él fuerzas milagrosas”.

Herodes había apresado a Juan y lo había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo, pues Juan le decía a Herodes que no le estaba permitido tenerla por mujer. Y aunque quería quitarle la vida, le tenía miedo a la gente, porque creían que Juan era un profeta.

Pero llegó el cumpleaños de Herodes, y la hija de Herodías bailó delante de todos y le gustó tanto a Herodes, que juró darle lo que le pidiera. Ella, aconsejada por su madre, le dijo: “Dame, sobre esta bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista”.

El rey se entristeció, pero a causa de su juramento y por no quedar mal con los invitados, ordenó que se la dieran; y entonces mandó degollar a Juan en la cárcel. Trajeron, pues, la cabeza en una bandeja, se la entregaron a la joven y ella se la llevó a su madre.

Después vinieron los discípulos de Juan, recogieron el cuerpo, lo sepultaron, y luego fueron a avisarle a Jesús.

Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist.
He has been raised from the dead;
that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”

Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison
on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
for John had said to him,
“It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people,
for they regarded him as a prophet.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests
and delighted Herod so much
that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
Prompted by her mother, she said,
“Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
The king was distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests who were present,
he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl,
who took it to her mother.
His disciples came and took away the corpse
and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

Meditacion:

El miedo es una emoción caprichosa que influye en nuestro comportamiento. Por ejemplo, Herodes quería matar a Juan el Bautista, pero no lo hizo porque tenía miedo de la gente, que creía que Juan era un profeta. Luego, también por miedo ordenó la ejecución de Juan para no ofender a los invitados a su fiesta. Al parecer el temor, la inseguridad y la desconfianza controlaban la razón de Herodes.

Por otro lado, tenemos a Juan el Bautista que no se dejaba dominar por el temor, no porque nunca sintiera miedo, sino porque su confianza en Dios le daba fuerzas para enfrentar sus temores y ponerlos en la perspectiva correcta. Confiaba en Dios, que lo llamó a ser profeta y que le reveló a Jesús, que proveía para él en el desierto y que lo sostuvo mientras estuvo preso. Pensaba que si Dios había sido tan bueno con él, también podía confiar en él para enfrentar la muerte.

Todos tenemos distintos temores: a lo desconocido, al fracaso, al futuro y a muchas otras cosas. Es algo simplemente humano. Pero no debemos dejar que el miedo nos controle. Podemos aprender a vivir como lo hizo Juan, caminando junto a Dios y confiando en él, sin importar lo que pueda suceder.

¿Cómo pudo Juan vencer sus temores? En el desierto, tuvo suficiente tiempo y espacio para estar en comunión con Dios. Al conocer más profundamente el amor de Dios, Juan confió en que Dios tenía un plan maravilloso para su vida, y esa confianza le permitió entregar sus miedos a su Padre y vivir según su fe.

Probablemente tú no vives en el desierto, pero eso no significa que no puedas estar en comunión con Dios diariamente. Establece tu propio tiempo y espacio, ya sea en un rincón de tu habitación o frente al Santísimo en la iglesia. No mires el televisor ni la Internet, y simplemente siéntate a conversar con el Señor. Permite que su amor te llene de confianza.

Dios no quiere que actúes guiado por el temor. Entre más tiempo pases en su presencia, más podrás conocerlo y confiar en él que es tu Padre celestial. Su amor perfecto por ti verdaderamente puede echar fuera todo temor (1 Juan 4, 18).

“Padre, confío en ti, sostenme con tu mano.” Amen

Fear is a capricious emotion that influences our behavior. For example, Herod wanted to kill John the Baptist, but he did not do so because he was afraid of the people, who believed that John was a prophet. Then, also out of fear, he ordered Juan's execution so as not to offend the guests at his party. Apparently fear, insecurity, and mistrust controlled Herod's reason.

On the other hand, we have John the Baptist who was not overcome by fear, not because he was never afraid, but because his trust in God gave him strength to face his fears and put them in the correct perspective. He trusted God, who called him to be a prophet and who revealed to Jesus, who provided for him in the desert and who sustained him while he was imprisoned. He thought that if God had been so good to him, he could also trust him to face death.

We all have different fears: the unknown, failure, the future and many other things. It is simply human. But we must not let fear control us. We can learn to live as John did, walking with God and trusting in him, no matter what may happen.

How could John overcome his fears? In the desert, he had enough time and space to commune with God. Knowing more deeply the love of God, John trusted that God had a wonderful plan for his life, and that trust allowed him to surrender his fears to his Father and live according to his faith.

You probably don't live in the desert, but that doesn't mean you can't be in communion with God daily. Set your own time and space, either in a corner of your room or in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the church. Don't watch the TV or the Internet, and just sit down and talk to the Lord. Let his love fill you with confidence.

God does not want you to be guided by fear. The more time you spend in his presence, the more you can know and trust him who is your heavenly Father. His perfect love for you can truly cast out all fear (1 John 4:18).

"Father, I trust you, hold me with your hand." Amen
