Mt 19, 16-22

En aquel tiempo, se acercó a Jesús un joven y le preguntó: “Maestro, ¿qué cosas buenas tengo que hacer para conseguir la vida eterna?” Le respondió Jesús: “¿Por qué me preguntas a mí acerca de lo bueno? Uno solo es el bueno: Dios. Pero, si quieres entrar en la vida, cumple los mandamientos”. El replicó: “¿Cuáles?”

Jesús le dijo: No matarás, no cometerás adulterio, no robarás, no levantarás falso testimonio, honra a tu padre y a tu madre, ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.

Le dijo entonces el joven: “Todo eso lo he cumplido desde mi niñez, ¿qué más me falta?” Jesús le dijo: “Si quieres ser perfecto, ve a vender todo lo que tienes, dales el dinero a los pobres, y tendrás un tesoro en el cielo; luego ven y sígueme”. Al oír estas palabras, el joven se fue entristecido, porque era muy rico.

“Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?”
He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good?
There is only One who is good.
If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
He asked him, “Which ones?”
And Jesus replied, “You shall not kill;
you shall not commit adultery;
you shall not steal;
you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother;
and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The young man said to him,
“All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go,
sell what you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad,
for he had many possessions.

Meditacion:

Cuando leemos el relato del joven rico, a menudo nos fijamos solo en que “el joven se fue entristecido” (Mateo 19, 22), pero no le damos el crédito que merece. El joven sabía lo suficiente para reconocer que necesitaba algo más, y buscó al Señor para que lo aconsejara. Su pregunta también fue sincera: “Maestro, ¿qué cosas buenas tengo que hacer?” Quería ser bueno, y anhelaba aquella “vida eterna” de la cual veía que los discípulos ya disfrutaban (19, 16).

Esta es una buena pregunta que podemos hacerle al Señor todos los días; de hecho, la Iglesia nos anima a hacerla. Diariamente, podemos pedirle que nos ayude a ver cómo nos va en nuestro caminar con él y cómo podemos hacerlo mejor. En el siglo XVI, San Ignacio de Loyola desarrolló una fórmula para hacer esto, y la llamó el “Examen” que tiene cinco pasos.

El primero consiste en darle gracias a Dios por todas las bendiciones que has recibido durante el día. Pregúntate, ¿por qué debo darle gracias a Dios?

El segundo paso es rezar al Espíritu Santo. A veces es difícil reconocer la presencia de Dios en el curso del día; así que pídele al Espíritu Santo que te ayude a dar una mirada en retrospectiva espiritual para reconocer los momentos en que él estuvo contigo.

Tercero, revisa lo que sucedió durante el día. ¿Con quién te encontraste? ¿Qué situaciones y emociones surgieron? ¿Cómo te habló Dios a través de ellas? ¿Cómo respondiste tú? No te preocupes por cada una de las circunstancias; solamente fíjate en lo que sobresale.

Cuarto, piensa en los momentos en que te sentiste más cerca de Dios. Tal vez fue a través de alguien que te ayudó en el supermercado o te maravillaste con el hermoso atardecer. ¿Cuándo te sentiste más lejos de Dios? Tal vez estabas impaciente con alguien que te pidió ayuda, o alguien que se te atravesó en la carretera y te hizo enojar. Pídele perdón al Señor por tus pecados y ayuda para cambiar. Pero recuerda, ¡no te alejes entristecido! El Señor te está invitando a seguirlo en el camino al cielo.

El quinto paso es mirar hacia el día que llegará mañana e invitar al Señor a estar contigo. Cada día, puedes caminar más y más cerca del Señor Jesús.

“Señor, ayúdame a parecerme más a ti.” Amen

When we read the story of the rich young man, we often notice only that “the young man went away saddened” (Matthew 19:22), but we do not give him the credit he deserves. The young man knew enough to recognize that he needed something more, and he sought the Lord for advice. His question was also sincere: "Master, what good things do I have to do?" He wanted to be good, and he longed for that "eternal life" which he saw the disciples already enjoyed (19, 16).

This is a good question we can ask the Lord every day; in fact, the Church encourages us to do so. On a daily basis, we can ask him to help us see how our walk with him is going and how we can do better. In the 16th century, Saint Ignatius of Loyola developed a formula to do this, and he called it the "Exam" which has five steps.

The first is to thank God for all the blessings you have received during the day. Ask yourself, why should I thank God?

The second step is to pray to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize the presence of God in the course of the day; So ask the Holy Spirit to help you take a spiritual look back to recognize the times when he was with you.

Third, review what happened during the day. Who did you meet? What situations and emotions arose? How did God speak to you through them? How did you respond? Don't worry about every single circumstance; just look at what sticks out.

Fourth, think about the times when you felt closest to God. Maybe it was through someone who helped you in the supermarket or you marveled at the beautiful sunset. When did you feel farthest from God? Maybe you were impatient with someone who asked for your help, or someone who crossed you on the road and made you angry. Ask the Lord for forgiveness for your sins and help to change. But remember, don't walk away saddened! The Lord is inviting you to follow him on the way to heaven.

The fifth step is to look forward to tomorrow and invite the Lord to be with you. Every day, you can walk closer and closer to the Lord Jesus.

"Lord, help me to be more like you." Amen
