Miedo

Lc 9, 43-45

En aquel tiempo, como todos comentaban, admirados, los prodigios que Jesús hacía, éste dijo a sus discípulos: “Presten mucha atención a lo que les voy a decir: El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres”.

Pero ellos no entendieron estas palabras, pues un velo les ocultaba su sentido y se las volvía incomprensibles. Y tenían miedo de preguntarle acerca de este asunto.

While they were all amazed at his every deed,
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Pay attention to what I am telling you.
The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” 
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it,
and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Meditacion:

Seguramente los apóstoles se asustaron cuando el Señor les dijo que él tendría que sufrir, ser rechazado por los maestros de la ley y ejecutado. Aun cuando no podían entender a qué se refería, captaron que su tono no auguraba nada bueno y eso les causó temor. ¿Cómo podía él, que era capaz de hacer milagros y ser tan sabio, dejarse apresar por los jefes religiosos en Jerusalén? ¿Cómo provocaría una reacción tan adversa que ellos quisieran matarlo? Pero eso no era todo: Posiblemente los discípulos entendieron que si Jesús estaba en peligro, ellos podían estarlo también.

¡Con razón se quedaron mudos! No querían escuchar las respuestas a las preguntas que surgían en su corazón, pues las posibilidades eran aterradoras.

Posiblemente el temor nos perturba más a menudo de lo que queramos admitir. Incluso el Señor experimentó miedo; recuerda sus palabras en el huerto de Getsemaní. El miedo es una reacción perfectamente normal frente a cualquier peligro que enfrentemos. Incluso podríamos decir que Dios nos dio este don para mantenernos a salvo; por ejemplo, la reacción de “pelear o escapar” ha salvado a los seres humanos del peligro por años.

Pero, al igual que cualquier emoción, el miedo sin fe puede escapar de nuestro control y separarnos del Señor, que es la fuente de toda confianza y paz, y puede ensombrecer nuestra capacidad de usar la razón para saber cuál es la mejor respuesta; además, nos puede hacer sentir solos e indefensos, cuando en realidad no lo estamos.

Habrá situaciones en la vida que te causen temor; pero tú no debes permitir que el miedo te controle o te abrume. Si puedes dar un solo paso hacia adelante con confianza, encontrarás una nueva fuerza; tus miedos disminuirán y eso te dará esperanza; puede ser que no desaparezcan por completo, pero no te controlarán.

La próxima vez que el temor haga presa de ti, preséntaselo al Señor, pídele que te conceda su paz y te haga ver la realidad como él la ve, y habla con tu esposo o esposa o con un amigo de confianza, alguien pueda ayudarte a superar el miedo. Recuerda que no importa tener miedo, siempre y cuando enfrentes el temor con fe en Dios, que es poderoso y generoso.

“Señor, tu amor echa fuera cualquier temor, yo confío en ti.” Amen

Surely the apostles were frightened when the Lord told them that he would have to suffer, be rejected by the teachers of the law, and executed. Even though they couldn't understand what he was referring to, they realized that his tone did not bode well and that caused them fear. How could he, who was able to perform miracles and be so wise, allow himself to be captured by the religious leaders in Jerusalem? How would he provoke such a bad reaction that they wanted to kill him? But that was not all: Possibly the disciples understood that if Jesus was in danger, they could be too.

No wonder they were speechless! They did not want to hear the answers to the questions that arose in their hearts, for the possibilities were terrifying.

Possibly fear disturbs us more often than we want to admit. Even the Lord experienced fear; remember his words in the garden of Gethsemane. Fear is a perfectly normal reaction to whatever danger we face. We could even say that God gave us this gift to keep us safe; for example, the "fight or flight" reaction has saved human beings from danger for years.

But like any emotion, fear without faith can escape our control and separate us from the Lord, who is the source of all trust and peace, and it can overshadow our ability to use reason to know the best response. Furthermore, it can make us feel alone and defenseless, when in reality we are not.

There will be situations in life that cause you fear; But you must not allow fear to control or overwhelm you. If you can confidently take a single step forward, you will find new strength; your fears will diminish and that will give you hope; They may not go away completely, but they won't control you.

The next time fear takes hold of you, present it to the Lord, ask him to grant you his peace and make you see reality as he sees it, and talk to your husband or wife or a trusted friend, someone can help you overcome fear. Remember that it does not matter to be afraid, as long as you face the fear with faith in God, who is powerful and generous.

"Lord, your love casts out any fear, I trust you." Amen
