Lc 11, 42-46

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo: “¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos, porque pagan diezmos hasta de la hierbabuena, de la ruda y de todas las verduras, pero se olvidan de la justicia y del amor de Dios! Esto debían practicar sin descuidar aquello. ¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos, porque les gusta ocupar los lugares de honor en las sinagogas y que les hagan reverencias en las plazas! ¡Ay de ustedes, porque son como esos sepulcros que no se ven, sobre los cuales pasa la gente sin darse cuenta!”

Entonces tomó la palabra un doctor de la ley y le dijo: “Maestro, al hablar así, nos insultas también a nosotros”. Entonces Jesús le respondió: “¡Ay de ustedes también, doctores de la ley, porque abruman a la gente con cargas insoportables, pero ustedes no las tocan ni con la punta del dedo!”

LK 11:42-46

The Lord said:
“Woe to you Pharisees!
You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb,
but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.
These you should have done, without overlooking the others.
Woe to you Pharisees!
You love the seat of honor in synagogues
and greetings in marketplaces.  
Woe to you!
You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.”

Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply,
“Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.”
And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law!
You impose on people burdens hard to carry,
but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.”

Meditacion:

Según la ley de Moisés, las familias judías debían entregar el diez por ciento de todo lo que producían y de sus posesiones como ofrenda al Señor. Este diezmo era utilizado para ayudar al sustento de los levitas, que estaban dedicados a ofrecer oraciones de alabanza y rendir culto de adoración en el Templo, y para auxiliar a los pobres del país. Nadie en Israel debía pasar hambre, y era responsabilidad de todos asegurarse de que eso no sucediera. Esto era parte del mandamiento que Dios dio a los israelitas de amar al prójimo como a sí mismos.

Entonces, ¿por qué el Señor Jesús criticaba a estos fariseos, si ellos pagaban el diezmo?

Bueno, muchos estudiosos creen que estos fariseos estaban pagando su diezmo de los condimentos para cocinar, pero eso era todo; hacían apenas lo justo para parecer buenos y aparentar que obedecían la ley.

Esta era la inquietud constante del Señor sobre sus oponentes: se preocupaban tanto de la ley de Dios, que se olvidaban de las personas que debían proteger según la ley. ¡Nadie puede sobrevivir alimentándose solo de hierbas de condimento! Pero eso no importaba, ellos solo querían cumplir lo mínimo.

En un discurso pronunciado en 2016, el Papa Francisco nos advirtió que la limosna “no puede ser un peso o un fastidio del que podamos liberarnos rápidamente”. Más bien, dijo, hay que “mirar a la cara, mirar a los ojos, a la persona que me está pidiendo ayuda” (Audiencia General, 9 de abril de 2016).

Fíjate en la persona a quien ayudas. Fíjate en el hijo de Dios que se encuentra frente a ti. Haz esto y estarás obedeciendo los mandatos de Dios más plenamente que si te centraras solamente en los mandamientos mismos.

Según San Pablo, “Toda la ley se resume en este solo mandato: ‘Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo’” (Gálatas 5, 14). Generosidad, bondad, compasión, perdón, así es como cumplimos la ley de Dios.

El Señor también nos dijo: “Todo lo que hicieron por uno de estos hermanos míos más humildes, por mí mismo lo hicieron” (Mateo 25, 40). Esta es la belleza del mensaje del Evangelio y la esencia de los mandamientos de Dios: si nos dedicamos a amar a los hermanos, no solo cumplimos la ley de Dios; también nos encontramos con Jesucristo.

“Señor, ayúdame a amar como tú amas.”

According to the law of Moses, Jewish families were to give 10 percent of everything they produced and their possessions as an offering to the Lord. This tithe was used to help support the Levites, who were dedicated to offering prayers of praise and worshiping in the Temple, and to help the poor of the country. No one in Israel was supposed to go hungry, and it was everyone's responsibility to make sure that didn't happen. This was part of the command that God gave the Israelites to love their neighbor as themselves.

So why was the Lord Jesus criticizing these Pharisees, if they paid tithe?

Well, many scholars believe that these Pharisees were paying their tithe for cooking seasonings, but that was it; they did just enough to look good and pretend they were obeying the law.

This was the Lord's constant concern about his opponents: they were so preoccupied with God's law that they forgot the people they were supposed to protect according to the law. No one can survive on seasoning herbs alone! But that didn't matter, they only wanted to do the bare minimum.

In a speech delivered in 2016, Pope Francis warned us that almsgiving "cannot be a burden or a nuisance from which we can quickly free ourselves." Rather, he said, you have to “look at the face, look at the person who is asking me for help” (General Audience, April 9, 2016).

Look at the person you help. Look at the son of God in front of you. Do this and you will be obeying God's commands more fully than if you focused only on the commandments themselves.

According to Saint Paul, “The whole law is summed up in this single command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'” (Galatians 5, 14). Generosity, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, this is how we fulfill God's law.

The Lord also told us: “Everything you did for one of these most humble brothers of mine, you did it for myself” (Matthew 25:40). This is the beauty of the Gospel message and the essence of God's commandments: if we dedicate ourselves to loving our brothers and sisters, we not only fulfill God's law; we also meet Jesus Christ.
