La puerta del saber

Lc 11, 47-54

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos y doctores de la ley: “¡Ay de ustedes, que les construyen sepulcros a los profetas que los padres de ustedes asesinaron! Con eso dan a entender que están de acuerdo con lo que sus padres hicieron, pues ellos los mataron y ustedes les construyen el sepulcro.

Por eso dijo la sabiduría de Dios: Yo les mandaré profetas y apóstoles, y los matarán y los perseguirán, para que así se le pida cuentas a esta generación de la sangre de todos los profetas que ha sido derramada desde la creación del mundo, desde la sangre de Abel hasta la de Zacarías, que fue asesinado entre el atrio y el altar. Sí, se lo repito: a esta generación se le pedirán cuentas.

¡Ay de ustedes, doctores de la ley, porque han guardado la llave de la puerta del saber! Ustedes no han entrado, y a los que iban a entrar les han cerrado el paso’’.

Luego que Jesús salió de allí, los escribas y fariseos comenzaron a acosarlo terriblemente con muchas preguntas y a ponerle trampas para ver si podían acusarlo con alguna de sus propias palabras.

The Lord said:
“Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets 
whom your fathers killed.
Consequently, you bear witness and give consent
to the deeds of your ancestors,
for they killed them and you do the building.
Therefore, the wisdom of God said,
‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles;
some of them they will kill and persecute’
in order that this generation might be charged
with the blood of all the prophets
shed since the foundation of the world,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah
who died between the altar and the temple building.
Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood!
Woe to you, scholars of the law!
You have taken away the key of knowledge.
You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”
When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees
began to act with hostility toward him
and to interrogate him about many things,
for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

Meditacion:

Los escribas tenían una misión importante que cumplir en el judaísmo del siglo I: copiar los textos sagrados de la Torá y el Talmud. Debido a la importancia de estos textos, su trabajo tenía que ser muy meticuloso. Si el texto copiado contenía errores en tres o más páginas, había que copiar de nuevo el rollo completo.

Entonces resulta irónico que el Señor reprendiera a estos “doctores de la ley” en el Evangelio de hoy porque no habían entendido el mensaje central de la Escritura (Lucas 11, 46). Supuestamente, los escribas “guardaban la llave del saber” que abría la puerta a un entendimiento más profundo de la Palabra de Dios (11, 52), pero no usaban la llave correctamente ni para ellos ni para el resto del pueblo. Y aquí estaba el Mesías, de pie frente a ellos y estos hombres se negaban a reconocerlo.

Ahora, nosotros no necesitamos ser doctores para entender las Escrituras. Es más, a todos se nos ha dado una especie de “llave del saber” cuando fuimos bautizados: el Espíritu Santo. La tarea del Espíritu es tomar las palabras que leemos del libro y grabarlas en nuestro corazón. Incluso cuando leemos el mismo pasaje muchas veces, el Espíritu puede revelarnos significados nuevos y diferentes de palabras y frases que no habíamos notado o que no habíamos comprendido antes. Solo es necesario que estemos dispuestos a apartar un tiempo y un lugar tranquilo para que esto suceda.

Si aún no lo estás haciendo, hazte el hábito de invocar al Espíritu cuando lees la Biblia. Basta con que digas “Ven, Espíritu Santo”, unas cuantas veces, despacio y en voz baja. Luego elige un pasaje y léelo en oración. Posiblemente no percibas nada en particular en lo que lees, pero con el tiempo el Espíritu te revelará más y más la Palabra de Dios. Podría incluso inspirarte a hacer un estudio bíblico o darte una nueva perspectiva leyendo las notas al pie de página en la Biblia o por medio de un buen comentario.

Dios es tan bueno con nosotros que nos ha provisto bondadosamente la “llave” que abre tesoros que duran toda la eternidad. Nunca dudes de que el Espíritu está actuando en tu vida.

“Espíritu Santo, guíame hoy y todos los días cuando rezo con la Palabra de Dios.” Amen

The scribes had an important mission to fulfill in 1st century Judaism: to copy the sacred texts of the Torah and the Talmud. Due to the importance of these texts, his work had to be very meticulous. If the copied text contained errors on three or more pages, the entire roll had to be copied again.

So it is ironic that the Lord rebuked these "doctors of the law" in today's Gospel because they had not understood the central message of Scripture (Luke 11:46). Supposedly, the scribes “kept the key of knowledge” that opened the door to a deeper understanding of God's Word (11:52), but they did not use the key correctly either for themselves or for the rest of the people. And here was the Messiah, standing in front of them and these men refused to acknowledge him.

Now, we don't need to be doctors to understand the Scriptures. What's more, all of us have been given a kind of “key of knowledge” when we were baptized: the Holy Spirit. The task of the Spirit is to take the words we read from the book and engrave them on our hearts. Even when we read the same passage many times, the Spirit can reveal new and different meanings of words and phrases that we have not noticed or understood before. It is only necessary that we are willing to set aside a time and a quiet place for this to happen.

If you are not already doing so, make a habit of invoking the Spirit when you read the Bible. Just say "Come Holy Spirit" a few times, slowly and quietly. Then choose a passage and read it prayerfully. You may not perceive anything in particular in what you read, but over time the Spirit will reveal more and more the Word of God. It might even inspire you to do a Bible study or give yourself a new perspective by reading the footnotes in the Bible or through a good commentary.

God is so good to us that he has graciously provided us with the “key” that unlocks treasures that last for all eternity. Never doubt that the Spirit is at work in your life.

"Holy Spirit, guide me today and every day when I pray with the Word of God." Amen
