Lc 11, 29-32

En aquel tiempo, la multitud se apiñaba alrededor de Jesús y éste comenzó a decirles: “La gente de este tiempo es una gente perversa. Pide una señal, pero no se le dará más señal que la de Jonás. Pues así como Jonás fue una señal para los habitantes de Nínive, lo mismo será el Hijo del hombre para la gente de este tiempo.

Cuando sean juzgados los hombres de este tiempo, la reina del sur se levantará el día del juicio para condenarlos, porque ella vino desde los últimos rincones de la tierra para escuchar la sabiduría de Salomón, y aquí hay uno que es más que Salomón.

Cuando sea juzgada la gente de este tiempo, los hombres de Nínive se levantarán el día del juicio para condenarla, porque ellos se convirtieron con la predicación de Jonás, y aquí hay uno que es más que Jonás’’.

LK 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment 
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation 
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Meditacion:

Son palabras duras las del Señor. Y valen también para hoy, y con una actualidad que asusta. Veámoslo.

Dentro de los deseos del hombre constatamos con bastante frecuencia esa tendencia a ver "rarezas" por doquier. Nos causa mucho placer, nos devora la curiosidad, nos arrojaríamos casi sin pensarlo adonde algún evento nos sacie este anhelo de espectacularidades. Y más si se trata de lo del más allá y todas esas cosas.

Pero también están los "racionales", los que piensan que todo tiene que tener una explicación científica, como si todo fueran astros y cálculos matemáticos. El día en que algún científico logre hacer la ecuación que demuestre cuánto amor tiene un hijo por su madre, seguramente llegará el fin del mundo porque nunca lo logrará. Entonces tenemos a los demasiado crédulos y a los netamente incrédulos. Los que han pedido signos a Cristo representan a estos dos bandos. No pedirían nada si fueran verdaderos creyentes. Veamos si las cosas no están así hoy en día.

Cerremos los ojos. Recordemos personas, situaciones, programas de televisión, etc. Seguramente saldrán a la memoria aquellos sujetos que buscan hasta en las piedras volcánicas algún rastro de lo divino, o de los que se montan en una exótica pirámide para aspirar energía cósmica. También serán rememorados los sabios del mundo que, mirando estrellas, formulan teorías científicas sobre agujeros negros, quasares y supernovas mandando, eso sí, a la Inteligencia que los creó a la oscuridad de supersticiones vanas.

Unos y otros piden una señal. ¿Qué ha dicho Cristo hoy por boca del evangelista Lucas? Que, lamentablemente, somos “una generación malvada”, esto es, no hemos convertido el corazón al Dios vivo, lo tenemos cegado con nuestra mala conducta y soberbia de la vida. ¿Cómo pedimos, entonces, una señal de fe si hemos cerrado, con esta actitud, el corazón a acoger al Señor?

Por eso la única señal será la del profeta Jonás, el hombre que predica la conversión por toda la ciudad de Nínive, a ver si libremente cada uno de nosotros acepta la propuesta, muda el corazón, y nos volvemos a Dios. Ya con esto habremos logrado la más grande señal que Dios haya podido obrar en el alma libre: la conversión por propia y deliberada iniciativa al Dios que da la vida, Fuente perenne del verdadero creyente, Verdad eterna del verdadero sabio.

Es mejor no pedir ninguna señal al Señor. Con esto hacemos mejor mérito a nuestra fe en Él.

Within the desires of man we see quite often that tendency to see "oddities" everywhere. It causes us a lot of pleasure, curiosity devours us, we would throw ourselves almost without thinking where some event satiates this longing for spectacularities. And more if it is about the afterlife and all those things.

But there are also the "rational", those who think that everything has to have a scientific explanation, as if everything were stars and mathematical calculations. The day that some scientist manages to make the equation that shows how much love a child has for his mother, the end of the world will surely come because he will never do it. Then we have the too gullible and the downright unbelieving. Those who have asked Christ for signs represent these two parties. They wouldn't ask for anything if they were true believers. Let's see if things are not like this today.

Let's close our eyes. Let's remember people, situations, television programs, etc. Surely those subjects who search even in volcanic stones for some trace of the divine, or those who mount an exotic pyramid to breathe in cosmic energy, will come to mind. The wise men of the world will also be remembered who, looking at stars, formulate scientific theories about black holes, quasars and supernovae, sending, yes, the Intelligence that created them to the darkness of vain superstitions.

Both ask for a sign. What has Christ said today through the mouth of the evangelist Luke? That, unfortunately, we are "an evil generation", that is, we have not converted our hearts to the living God, we have blinded them with our misconduct and pride of life. How, then, do we ask for a sign of faith if we have closed our hearts to welcome the Lord with this attitude?

That is why the only sign will be that of the prophet Jonah, the man who preaches conversion throughout the city of Nineveh, to see if each one of us freely accepts the proposal, changes our hearts, and we turn to God. With this, we will have achieved the greatest sign that God has been able to work in the free soul: conversion by own and deliberate initiative to the God who gives life, the perennial Source of the true believer, the eternal Truth of the true sage.

It is better not to ask the Lord for any sign. With this we make our faith in Him better merit.
