Jn 3, 22-30

En aquel tiempo, fue Jesús con sus discípulos a Judea y permaneció allí con ellos, bautizando. También Juan estaba bautizando en Enón, cerca de Salim, porque ahí había agua abundante. La gente acudía y se bautizaba, pues Juan no había sido encarcelado todavía.

Surgió entonces una disputa entre algunos de los discípulos de Juan y unos judíos, acerca de la purificación. Los discípulos fueron a decirle a Juan: “Mira, maestro, aquel que estaba contigo en la otra orilla del Jordán y del que tú diste testimonio, está ahora bautizando y todos acuden a él”.

Contestó Juan: “Nadie puede apropiarse nada, si no le ha sido dado del cielo. Ustedes mismos son testigos de que yo dije: ‘Yo no soy el Mesías, sino el que ha sido enviado delante de él’. En una boda, el que tiene a la novia es el novio; en cambio, el amigo del novio, que lo acompaña y lo oye hablar, se alegra mucho de oír su voz. Así también yo me lleno ahora de alegría. Es necesario que él crezca y que yo venga a menos”.

Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea,
where he spent some time with them baptizing. 
John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim,
because there was an abundance of water there,
and people came to be baptized,
for John had not yet been imprisoned. 
Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew
about ceremonial washings. 
So they came to John and said to him,
“Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan,
to whom you testified,
here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.”
John answered and said,
“No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven. 
You yourselves can testify that I said that I am not the Christ,
but that I was sent before him. 
The one who has the bride is the bridegroom;
the best man, who stands and listens for him,
rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. 
So this joy of mine has been made complete. 
He must increase; I must decrease.”

Meditacion:

San Juan se dirigió a una comunidad que atravesaba un tiempo difícil. Algunas personas se estaban desviando por filosofías que no eran fieles al Evangelio, y como resultado empezaron a separarse del grupo más grande de fieles. Una de estas filosofías era una forma temprana de docetismo, que es una negación de que Jesús sea completamente humano. Otra filosofía era el gnosticismo, que le daba más importancia a lo que llama el conocimiento “interior, espiritual” y no tanto a amarse unos a otros y a cumplir los mandamientos.

Así que San Juan escribió su carta para recordarles que Jesús es el “único verdadero” (1 Juan 5, 20). En esencia, lo que estaba diciendo es que “ustedes han sido bautizados en el verdadero Hijo de Dios, no en ese Cristo falso descrito por aquellos que están confundidos por sus falsas filosofías.” De esta forma le recordó a las personas que las falsas enseñanzas nunca podrían prevalecer sobre la verdad, que es Jesús.

Juan no es el único en la historia que ha ayudado a resguardar a la Iglesia de las herejías y las falsas creencias. En otros tiempos lo han hecho, por ejemplo, el obispo Atanasio, del siglo IV que defendió la doctrina de la Santísima Trinidad frente a los arrianos, que creían que Jesús no era igual al Padre, sino que estaba subordinado a él. En el siglo V, San Agustín refutó las enseñanzas de Pelagio, que negaba la doctrina del pecado original y creía que las personas podían ser santas y lograr la salvación por sus propios medios. Con sus escritos sobre el amor y la misericordia de Dios, santos como San Francisco de Sales y Santa Teresa de Lisieux refutaron la herejía conocida como el jansenismo; que prevaleció durante el siglo XVII y más allá y que impedía que la gente recibiera la comunión porque creían que nunca serían dignos.

La Iglesia ha visto muchas otras herejías a través de los años, y sin duda vendrán más. Pero así como San Juan tranquilizó a su comunidad, también quiere tranquilizarnos a nosotros. Jesús es el único que es verdadero, y él no permitirá que las puertas del infierno prevalezcan contra su Iglesia (Mateo 16, 18). El Señor siempre hará surgir líderes y santos que preserven la verdad del Evangelio, así como lo ha hecho él mismo en los últimos dos mil años.

San Juan addressed a community that was going through a difficult time. Some people were straying into philosophies that were not faithful to the gospel, and as a result they began to separate themselves from the larger group of faithful. One of these philosophies was an early form of Docetism, which is a denial that Jesus is fully human. Another philosophy was Gnosticism, which gave more importance to what it calls "inner, spiritual" knowledge and not so much to loving one another and keeping the commandments.

So Saint John wrote his letter to remind them that Jesus is the "only true one" (1 John 5:20). In essence, what he was saying is that "you have been baptized into the true Son of God, not into that false Christ described by those who are confused by his false philosophies." In this way he reminded people that false teachings could never prevail over the truth, which is Jesus.

John is not the only one in history who has helped protect the Church from heresies and false beliefs. In other times they have done it, for example, the 4th century bishop Athanasius who defended the doctrine of the Holy Trinity against the Arians, who believed that Jesus was not equal to the Father, but was subordinate to him. In the 5th century, St. Augustine refuted the teachings of Pelagius, who denied the doctrine of original sin and believed that people could be holy and achieve salvation on their own. With his writings on the love and mercy of God, saints like Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Teresa of Lisieux refuted the heresy known as Jansenism; that prevailed throughout the 17th century and beyond and that prevented people from receiving communion because they believed they would never be worthy.

The Church has seen many other heresies over the years, and more are sure to come. But just as San Juan reassured the community about him, he also wants to reassure us. Jesus is the only one who is true, and he will not allow the gates of hell to prevail against his Church (Matthew 16:18). The Lord will always bring forth leaders and saints who preserve the truth of the gospel, just as he has done himself for the past two thousand years.
