Mt 6, 1-6. 16-18

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Tengan cuidado de no practicar sus obras de piedad delante de los hombres para que los vean. De lo contrario, no tendrán recompensa con su Padre celestial.

Por lo tanto, cuando des limosna, no lo anuncies con trompeta, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y por las calles, para que los alaben los hombres. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace la derecha, para que tu limosna quede en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará.

Cuando ustedes hagan oración, no sean como los hipócritas, a quienes les gusta orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las plazas, para que los vea la gente. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando vayas a orar, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora ante tu Padre, que está allí, en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará.

Cuando ustedes ayunen, no pongan cara triste, como esos hipócritas que descuidan la apariencia de su rostro, para que la gente note que están ayunando. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara, para que no sepa la gente que estás ayunando, sino tu Padre, que está en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará’’.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

Meditacion:

Tenemos 40 días. Hoy comienza la Cuaresma. Somos invitados a vivir un tiempo precioso de renovación y crecimiento personal - comunitario. Un año más iniciamos un itinerario, un entrenamiento, un proceso que quiere llevarnos a la meta de la Pascua. Y particularmente, en este año caracterizado por la pandemia, el Papa Francisco nos invita a vivirlo renovando con intensidad las tres virtudes teologales, es decir, los hábitos que Dios infunde en la inteligencia y en la voluntad de la persona para ordenar sus acciones a Dios mismo: la fe, la esperanza y la caridad.

Destaco dos párrafos del mensaje del Papa para la Cuaresma de este año:

- “En este tiempo de Cuaresma, acoger y vivir la Verdad que se manifestó en Cristo significa ante todo dejarse alcanzar por la Palabra de Dios, que la Iglesia nos transmite de generación en generación. Esta Verdad no es una construcción del intelecto, destinada a pocas mentes elegidas, superiores o ilustres, sino que es un mensaje que recibimos y podemos comprender gracias a la inteligencia del corazón, abierto a la grandeza de Dios que nos ama antes de que nosotros mismos seamos conscientes de ello”. 

- “Vivir una Cuaresma de caridad quiere decir cuidar a quienes se encuentran en condiciones de sufrimiento, abandono o angustia a causa de la pandemia del Covid. En un contexto tan incierto sobre el futuro, recordemos la palabra que Dios dirige a su Siervo: «No temas, que te he redimido» (Is 43,1), ofrezcamos con nuestra

caridad una palabra de confianza, para que el otro sienta que Dios lo ama como a un hijo.”

Convertíos a mi de todo corazón, escuchamos en la profecía de Joel (1ª lectura). Convertirse significa volver la mirada a Dios, buscarle y dejarnos encontrar por Él.

Que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha. El evangelio nos recuerda hoy que cuando hagamos limosna, ayunemos o recemos, que sea con autenticidad, no para cumplir ni por el qué dirán o para quedar bien ante los demás. Por lo tanto, hoy es un buen día para preguntarme en mi oración personal o cuando me impongan la ceniza sobre mi cabeza: Señor, ¿qué ayuno necesito? ¿Cuáles son las obesidades que me hacen pesado y torpe a la luz del Espíritu? ¿De qué me tengo que vaciar para que tú puedas entrar más en mi? ¿Qué limosna puedo dar? ¿Qué parte de mi no acabo de entregar a los demás? ¿En qué aspectos de mi persona puedo ser más generoso y oblativo? ¿Qué oración puedo hacer? ¿Cómo intimar más contigo en lo secreto de mi habitación?

Todas estas preguntas y prácticas cuaresmales nos invitan a ser más misericordiosos, a crecer en el amor, a estar más cerca de Dios para vivir dentro de cuarenta días su Pascua, su paso por nuestra vida. ¡Ánimo! Es una aventura preciosa que merece la pena vivir. Déjate sorprender por Dios en este tiempo de búsqueda y preparación. De todo corazón, ¡feliz Cuaresma!

I highlight two paragraphs from the Pope's message for Lent this year:

- “In this season of Lent, welcoming and living the Truth that was manifested in Christ means first of all letting ourselves be reached by the Word of God, which the Church transmits to us from generation to generation. This Truth is not a construction of the intellect, intended for a few chosen, superior or illustrious minds, but rather a message that we receive and can understand thanks to the intelligence of the heart, open to the greatness of God who loves us before we ourselves let us be aware of it ”.

- “Living a Lent of charity means taking care of those who are in conditions of suffering, abandonment or anguish due to the Covid pandemic. In such an uncertain context about the future, let us remember the word that God addresses to his Servant: "Do not fear, I have redeemed you" (Is 43,1), let us offer with our

charity a word of trust, so that the other feels that God loves him as a son. "

Convert to me with all your heart, we hear in the prophecy of Joel (1st reading). Converting means turning our gaze to God, seeking him and allowing ourselves to be found by him.

Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. The gospel reminds us today that when we give alms, fast or pray, it is with authenticity, not to comply or why they will say or to look good to others. Therefore, today is a good day to ask myself in my personal prayer or when the ashes are imposed on my head: Lord, what fast do I need? What are the obesities that make me heavy and clumsy in the light of the Spirit? What do I have to empty myself of so that you can enter more into me? What alms can I give? What part of me do I not just give to others? In what aspects of myself can I be more generous and oblative? What prayer can I make? How can I become more intimate with you in the secret of my room?

All these Lenten questions and practices invite us to be more merciful, to grow in love, to be closer to God in order to experience his Passover in forty days, his passing through our lives. Cheer up! It is a beautiful adventure that is worth living. Let God surprise you in this time of search and preparation. With all my heart, Happy Lent!
