Mc 8, 14-21

En aquel tiempo, cuando los discípulos iban con Jesús en la barca, se dieron cuenta de que se les había olvidado llevar pan; sólo tenían uno. Jesús les hizo esta advertencia: “Fíjense bien y cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de la de Herodes”. Entonces ellos comentaban entre sí: “Es que no tenemos panes”.

Dándose cuenta de ello, Jesús les dijo: “¿Por qué están comentando que no trajeron panes? ¿Todavía no entienden ni acaban de comprender? ¿Tan embotada está su mente? ¿Para qué tienen ustedes ojos, si no ven, y oídos, si no oyen? ¿No recuerdan cuántos canastos de sobras recogieron, cuando repartí cinco panes entre cinco mil hombres?” Ellos le contestaron: “Doce”. Y añadió: “¿Y cuántos canastos de sobras recogieron cuando repartí siete panes entre cuatro mil?” Le respondieron: “Siete”. Entonces él dijo: “¿Y todavía no acaban de comprender?”

Mk 8:14-21

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread,
and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out,
guard against the leaven of the Pharisees
and the leaven of Herod.” 
They concluded among themselves that
it was because they had no bread.
When he became aware of this he said to them,
“Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread?
Do you not yet understand or comprehend?
Are your hearts hardened?
Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear?
And do you not remember,
when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand,
how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?”
They answered him, “Twelve.”
“When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand,
how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?”
They answered him, “Seven.”
He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Meditacion:

La Palabra de Dios nos invita hoy, víspera de comenzar la Cuaresma, a tener cuidado con el mal en todas sus dimensiones: personal, social, estructural, … Tanto el libro del Génesis como el Evangelio, se lamentan y nos previenen de esta realidad contraria al plan de Dios. Leemos en la primera lectura: “Al ver el Señor que la maldad del hombre crecía sobre la tierra, y que todo su modo de pensar era siempre perverso, se arrepintió de haber creado al hombre en la tierra, y le pesó de corazón”. Palabras duras que nos invitan a la  reflexión. ¿En qué manera soy yo participe con mi acción y omisión de generar y crear un mal ambiente, una atmósfera de maldad, y pecado?. Dios ama a su creación y a sus criaturas y le pesa cuando no avanza según su plan establecido, cuando a través del uso de la libertad, colaboramos con el plan de nuestro creador o lo destrozamos.

Jesús nos advierte del mal camuflado que también crece y se extiende peligrosamente, y lo hace a través del ejemplo de la levadura, el ingrediente de cocina que hace que la masa fermente; ejemplo que ha utilizado otras veces de manera positiva, pero no en esta ocasión: “Tened cuidado con la levadura de los fariseos y con la de Herodes”. Hoy tendríamos que sustituir fariseos y Herodes por otros personajes, corrientes de pensamiento, posverdades que fermentan y hacen crecer el mal. ¿Cuáles crees que son? ¿Cuáles adviertes cómo destructivas? ¿Cuáles minan tu fe y tu esperanza?

Jesús les recuerda a sus discípulos y a nosotros hoy, que Él es el Pan de Vida, el alimento que nos ayuda a combatir el mal y a generar bien y bondad. En la eucaristía lo recibimos. Eres lo que comes, cuerpo de Cristo. Pan que nos fortalece y nos hace tomar conciencia de la identidad a la que estamos llamados a ser: que todos seamos uno. Y en esa unidad debemos cuidarnos y cuidar nuestra casa común, la creación de la que Dios nos ha hecho garantes, cuidadores. Parece una aspiración muy exigente, pue a veces no somos capaces ni de cuidarnos a nosotros mismos, pero a eso aspiramos y para ello necesitamos el Pan que Jesús es para nosotros, el alimento, no otros panes que nos llenan pero sin nutrirnos, cuando no intoxicándonos.

La secuencia del Evangelio de hoy termina con pregunta que Jesús nos dirige: “¿no acabáis de entender? Es un buen día para orar con esta pregunta. Ilumina Señor nuestro entendimiento para que podamos comprender, asimilar y llevar a la vida aquella palabra de vida que nos cuesta y para librarnos de las levaduras tóxicas que contaminan nuestro corazón.

The Word of God invites us today, the eve of Lent, to be careful with evil in all its dimensions: personal, social, structural, ... Both the book of Genesis and the Gospel, lament and warn us of this contrary reality to God's plan. We read in the first reading: “When the Lord saw that the wickedness of man grew on the earth, and that his whole way of thinking was always wicked, he repented of having created man on earth, and it weighed him heart". Harsh words that invite us to reflect. In what way am I involved with my action and omission to generate and create a bad environment, an atmosphere of evil, and sin? God loves his creation and his creatures and weighs on him when it does not advance according to his established plan, when through the use of freedom, we collaborate with the plan of our creator or destroy it.

Jesus warns us of the badly camouflaged that also grows and spreads dangerously, and he does so through the example of yeast, the cooking ingredient that makes dough ferment; An example that he has used positively before, but not this time: "Be careful with the yeast of the Pharisees and with that of Herod." Today we would have to replace the Pharisees and Herod with other characters, currents of thought, post-truths that ferment and make evil grow. What do you think they are? Which ones do you see as destructive? Which ones undermine your faith and hope?

Jesus reminds his disciples and us today that he is the Bread of Life, the food that helps us fight evil and generate good and goodness. In the Eucharist we receive it. You are what you eat, body of Christ. Bread that strengthens us and makes us aware of the identity to which we are called to be: that we all be one. And in that unity we must take care of ourselves and our common home, the creation of which God has made us guarantors, caretakers. It seems like a very demanding aspiration, because sometimes we are not even capable of taking care of ourselves, but that is what we aspire to and for this we need the Bread that Jesus is for us, food, not other breads that fill us but do not nourish us, when not intoxicating us.

Today's Gospel sequence ends with a question that Jesus directs us: “Have you not just understood? It is a good day to pray with this question. Lord enlighten our understanding so that we can understand, assimilate and bring to life that word of life that costs us and to rid ourselves of the toxic yeasts that contaminate our hearts.
