Lc 4, 24-30

En aquel tiempo, Jesús llegó a Nazaret, entró a la sinagoga y dijo al pueblo: “Yo les aseguro que nadie es profeta en su tierra. Había ciertamente en Israel muchas viudas en los tiempos de Elías, cuando faltó la lluvia durante tres años y medio, y hubo un hambre terrible en todo el país; sin embargo, a ninguna de ellas fue enviado Elías, sino a una viuda que vivía en Sarepta, ciudad de Sidón. Había muchos leprosos en Israel, en tiempos del profeta Eliseo; sin embargo, ninguno de ellos fue curado, sino Naamán, que era de Siria”.

Al oír esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga se llenaron de ira, y levantándose, lo sacaron de la ciudad y lo llevaron hasta una saliente del monte, sobre el que estaba construida la ciudad, para despeñarlo. Pero él, pasando por en medio de ellos, se alejó de allí.

Gospel

Lk 4:24-30

Jesus said to the people in the synagogue at Nazareth:
“Amen, I say to you,
no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel
in the days of Elijah
when the sky was closed for three and a half years
and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent,
but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel
during the time of Elisha the prophet;
yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
When the people in the synagogue heard this,
they were all filled with fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town,
and led him to the brow of the hill
on which their town had been built, 
to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

Meditacion:

Miremos ahora a Jesús en la sinagoga de Nazaret en medio de sus paisanos recordando a un Dios Padre de todos los que confían en Él. El Espíritu Santo que guía a Jesús y la palabra del profeta Isaías son como la chispa que enciende el fuego de la misión de Jesús fuera de su pequeño pueblo.

Lucas pone en esta primera escena de la vida pública de Jesús el rechazo del pueblo judío contra él: un rechazo que culminará con la muerte en la cruz. Así, lo que comenzó siendo simpatía y admiración, se cambia en hostilidad. Desprecian a Jesús porque solamente es el hijo de José y no ha tenido maestros que puedan garantizar su conocimiento de la biblia. El odio contra Jesús crece y sus paisanos intentan eliminarlo tirándolo por un barranco, “pero él, abriéndose paso entre ellos, se marchó”. En este gesto hay como un anticipo de su resurrección.

Jesús recuerda a sus paisanos que Dios ofrece la salvación a todos los hombres. Y  para confirmar esta enseñanza recuerda que Elías y Eliseo realizaron milagros entre personas que no pertenecían al pueblo de Israel y lograron entre ellos mejores frutos de conversión.

No somos propietarios de Dios, sino sus humildes servidores, por eso el cristiano no se avergüenza de arrodillarse ante Él y dar una mano a su prójimo sin mirar el color de su piel.

Let us now look at Jesus in the synagogue of Nazareth in the midst of his countrymen, remembering a God the Father of all who trust in Him. The Holy Spirit who guides Jesus and the word of the prophet Isaiah are like the spark that lights the fire of the mission of Jesus outside his small town.

Luke puts in this first scene of Jesus' public life the rejection of the Jewish people against him: a rejection that will culminate in death on the cross. Thus, what began as sympathy and admiration, turns into hostility. They despise Jesus because he is only the son of Joseph and has not had teachers who can guarantee his knowledge of the Bible. Hatred against Jesus grows and his countrymen try to eliminate him by throwing him down a ravine, "but he, making his way among them, left." In this gesture there is a foretaste of his resurrection.

Jesus reminds his countrymen that God offers salvation to all men. And to confirm this teaching, he recalls that Elijah and Elisha performed miracles among people who did not belong to the people of Israel and achieved better conversion fruits among themselves.

We are not the owners of God, but the humble servants of him, that is why the Christian is not ashamed to kneel before him and give a hand to his neighbor without looking at the color of his skin.
