Los hijos del trueno.

Mt 20, 17-28

En aquel tiempo, mientras iba de camino a Jerusalén, Jesús llamó aparte a los Doce y les dijo: "Ya vamos camino de Jerusalén y el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas, que lo condenarán a muerte y lo entregarán a los paganos para que se burlen de él, lo azoten y lo crucifiquen; pero al tercer día, resucitará".

Entonces se acercó a Jesús la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo, junto con ellos, y se postró para hacerle una petición. Él le preguntó: "¿Qué deseas?" Ella respondió: "Concédeme que estos dos hijos míos se sienten, uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda, en tu Reino". Pero Jesús replicó: "No saben ustedes lo que piden. ¿Podrán beber el cáliz que yo he de beber?" Ellos contestaron: "Sí podemos". Y él les dijo: "Beberán mi cáliz; pero eso de sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda no me toca a mí concederlo; es para quien mi Padre lo tiene reservado".

Al oír aquello, los otros diez discípulos se indignaron contra los dos hermanos. Pero Jesús los llamó y les dijo: "Ya saben que los jefes de los pueblos los tiranizan y que los grandes los oprimen. Que no sea así entre ustedes. El que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea el que los sirva, y el que quiera ser primero, que sea su esclavo; así como el Hijo del hombre no ha venido a ser servido, sino a servir y a dar la vida por la redención de todos".

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests
and the scribes,
and they will condemn him to death,
and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day."

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her, "What do you wish?"
She answered him,
"Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom."
Jesus said in reply,
"You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can."
He replied,
"My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left,
this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Meditacion:

El evangelio de hoy nos presenta una pelea de familia, como esas que tantas veces encontramos en nuestras comunidades. Y es que a veces nos atrae el titulo, figurar, la vanidad como leiamos ayer.

Pero para comprender esta lectura, veamos quienes eran los hijos de Zebedeo. Eran los apostoles Juan y Santiago; su madre era Salome quien segun Marcos "seguia y servia" es decir, ministraba a Jesus; Salome era tia de Jesus ya que era hermana de Maria, su madre.

O sea que esta es una pelea entre familiares por figurar.

Los otros apostoles se enojan con ellos pero no por el reclamo.. se enojan porque no querian perderse un sitio de honor al lado de Jesus.

Aun subiendo a Jerusalen para su martirio, aun diciendoles Jesus que seria torturado y asesinado pero que resucitaria, sus apostoles estaban peleandose por los cargos... les suena conocido??

Lo grandioso de la Biblia es la actualidad que tiene con pasajes como este.

Dice el obispo Mons. Roberto Barron: “El poder no es, en sí mismo, algo malo. Y lo mismo puede decirse en el caso del honor. Santo Tomás de Aquino dijo que el honor es la bandera de la virtud, un modo de señalar a otros que vale la pena prestar la atención a algo.

“Pero, entonces, ¿cuál es el problema? El problema es que están exigiendo estas dos cosas con un espíritu erróneo. El ego no deseará utilizar el poder para cumplir los propósitos de Dios, ni tampoco en servicio de la verdad, la belleza y la bondad, sino para su propio engrandecimiento y defensa. Cuando se busca el honor por el honor mismo, o para hinchar el ego, también se vuelve peligroso.

“¿Cuál es la salida? Jesús nos lo dice: ‘El que quiera ser grande, que se haga servidor de ustedes, y el que quiera ser el primero que se haga su esclavo.’ Cuando sirves a otros, cuando te conviertes en el último, entonces accedes al poder de Dios y buscas honrar a Dios.”

O sea que volvemos al punto que muchas veces Jesus pretende resaltar.. el servicio a los demas como camino de redencion.

Y Juan y Santiago? Juan sera el discipulo amado por Jesus, escribira uno de los cuatro evangelios, ademas de cartas y el apocalipsis y Santiago estara en ese circulo muy cercano que vivira cosas la resurrecion de la hija de Jairo, la aparicion en el lago de Tiberiades y sera muerto por Herodes.

Al final, ambos vivieron una vida dedicada a Jesus y al servicio de una Iglesia aun primitiva pero empujada por el Espiritu Santo. Amen

The gospel of today presents us with a family fight, like those that we find so often in our communities. And sometimes we are attracted by the title, figure, vanity as we read yesterday.

But to understand this reading, let's see who were the sons of Zebedee. They were the apostles John and James; his mother was Salome, who according to Mark "followed and served" that is, he ministered to Jesus; Salome was aunt of Jesus since she was Maria's sister, her mother.

So this is a fight between relatives to figure.

The other apostles are angry with them but not for the claim .. they get angry because they did not want to miss a place of honor next to Jesus.

Even going up to Jerusalem for his martyrdom, even telling Jesus that he would be tortured and killed but that he would be resurrected, his apostles were fighting over the charges ... does it sound familiar?

The great thing about the Bible is the actuality it has with passages like this.

Says Bishop Roberto Barron: "Power is not, in itself, a bad thing. And the same can be said in the case of honor. St. Thomas Aquinas said that honor is the banner of virtue, a way of pointing out to others that it is worth paying attention to something.

"But, then, what is the problem? The problem is that they are demanding these two things with the wrong spirit. The ego will not want to use the power to fulfill the purposes of God, nor in the service of truth, beauty and goodness, but for its own aggrandizement and defense. When you seek honor for the honor itself, or to inflate the ego, it also becomes dangerous.

"What is the exit? Jesus tells us: "Whoever wants to be great, let him become your servant, and whoever wants to be the first to become his slave." When you serve others, when you become the last, then you accede to the power of God and you seek to honor God. "

In other words, we return to the point that Jesus often wants to highlight .. the service to others as a way of redemption.

And Juan and Santiago? John will be the disciple loved by Jesus, he will write one of the four gospels, besides letters and the apocalypse and James will be in that very close circle that will live things the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus, the appearance in the lake of Tiberias and will be dead by Herod.

In the end, both lived a life dedicated to Jesus and to the service of a Church that was still primitive but pushed by the Holy Spirit. Amen
